It's been revealed the king of fighters Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is returning to this year's EVO Championship Series.
Apart from Nintendo's all-star brawler, the following games have been locked in once again: Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[cl-r], Dragon Ball FighterZ, Street Fighter V, Tekken 7, Samurai Shodown and Soul Calibur VI. The new (and old games) that weren't featured at last year's event include Granblue Fantasy Versus and Marvel vs. Capcom 2.
The titles that have been dropped from this year's line-up include Mortal Kombat 11 (after a single appearance at EVO 2019) and BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle. The biggest surprise is the return of Marvel vs. Capcom 2. It's the only classic fighting game on the list and was originally released in the year 2000.
In case you're wondering, Super Smash Bros. Melee was dropped from EVO last year, so it's no surprise to see it has been excluded from this year's event as well. This annual tournament takes place in Las Vegas from 31st July until 2nd August.
What do you think of the line-up for EVO 2020? Share your thoughts below.

MvC2 will be fun to watch. Too bad about MC11 though.
I'm most hyped to see some high level Granblue fighting and Undernight.
Ultimate is more popular than Melee, anyone not accepting the fact is in denial...
@Decapre I don't disagree with you though no one is even talking about Melee yet.
Mortal Kombat games just aren't up to snuff. The sameness of all the fighters just from animation alone is rubbish. The modern MK games look good but it is style over substance.
I'm actually surprised to see MK11 go. It sold really well--even on the Switch and is still getting new content. Oh well. though seeing MvC2 back is a surprise. The last time Marvel vs Capcom was at EVO was three years ago at EVO 2017. Here's the lineups.

At any rate, I'm shocked at MvC2 specifically seeing as it doesn't have beloved memes such as Deadpool and Phoenix Wright like MvC3. You'd think they'd pick MvC3 again. However, it's very nice to also see Under Night hold on right alongside the more mainstream fighters, seeing as it was very niche prior to being included in the Blazblue Cross Tag crossover title. Just as well, I'm happy to see no Blazblue here at all considering that Under Night can finally stand on its own without being compared to it nor needing Cross Tag to be relevant. With it releasing on the Switch soon it can hopefully make good sales--which I will be a part of for sure. The rest are kinda stationery picks and make sense like Smash, DBFZ, SFV, and so on. Also, everyone should buy Under Night lol
My main problem with MK11 on switch is hair textures. Its hilariously bad and I'm not really a graphics snob. It sticks out like a sore thumb but I still find the game enjoyable
I'm glad Soulcalibur made it. Only "real" fighting game I enjoy. It's really fun.
MVC2? Hasnt that game been torn to shreds? Not looking forward to that Storm, Vision, and Colossus bore fest again.
@PBandSmelly
MVC2 is one of the OG EVO games that helped set the path for its future from what I understand. It's a great way to pay homage to its anniversary.
@Gravitron
Yeah that and the ground textures are really the only problems. It's otherwise an amazing port and other big companies should take notice.
I know ultimate is popular and awesome and stuff, but i wish melee and ultimate could both be at evo
@Sully5246 You aware what happened when they WERE? That's not a good idea.
Never really cared much about this, but why not Ultimate Marvel V Capcom 3? That was a great game. I'm guessing fans don't like the stats as much or something.
@JR150 Ahhh ok, I was wondering why not 3! Got it now.
I actually prefer MVC2 over Ultimate Marvel 3. Celebrating its 20th anniversary at EVO no doubt. Makes me want a new MVC game. I like the gameplay in Infinite but everything else was just kinda off about that game.
@shonenjump86
Knowing how Capcom screwed Infinite up...I'd rather get 2 and 3 ported to Switch first to test the waters for what people want...
@Saro what happened when EVO had both Melee and the current gen smash game? Why is it not a good idea? If I recall, one game finished Saturday, and one game finished Sunday
Melee fans on suicide watch
melee scene is doing fine, felt like there was a larger antagonistic reaction from the greater FGC and ultimate community than there was backlash from the melee scene when they were dropped. not sure why people are bringing melee into this.
surprised at mk getting dropped, though i can't say i'm at all disappointed. very excited to see granblue and mvc2 on the big stage. also wouldn't mind if namco announced something huge like t7 season 4, t8, or t7 on switch.
I wanna take you for a ride!
Ugh wish I had the availability to go now. Mvc 2 is my jam!
Quality stuff. I’ll be following everything except smash and fighterz.
@Snivy102 during Evo 2017 I heard there were demanding chants in the crowd of "Melee." repeatedly while Ultimate was going on. That's pretty rude, and gives Melee's fanbase a toxic appearance. If we have that kind of behavior, it's not a good idea to bring Melee back if that happens again.
And no offense, it's pretty much just Fox or Falco for competitive Melee. That's pretty quick to tire watching everyone using the same two characters.
@Saro First: The particular instance in question happened because the announcer said to the crowd: "Who's ready for Melee coming up next! Make some noise!". The year later, at EVO 2018's infamous Smash4 grand finals, two Bayonettas stalled the match by doing absolutely nothing because they were bored and wanted to have fun. Even the Smash4 fans wanted the match to end.
Second: You very evidently do not know much about Melee if you think Fox and Falco make up most of the top competitive play. Out of the top 10 Melee players in the world, 2 of them main Fox and 2 of them main Marth. The other 6 players main Sheik, Yoshi, C.Falcon, Pikachu, Falco, and Puff.
I believe one of the reasons for taking out MK11 is that the game is very unbalanced - at least that is my major gripe with it. Really good game but the balance is terrible.
@Alztru Unbalanced in what way? (I haven't play it yet)
Is "Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[cl-r]" a game in which you dismiss the joypad to fight using keyboard shortcuts? Is it the "Type of the Dead" of Hadôkens?
@Joriss it might actually not be the reason but it seems to me that some characters have very good combos that are really hard to block and hard to punish when blocked or moves with very little lag on block and yet their moves/combos deal a lot of damage while some other characters seem slow and have moves that can be easily blocked and punished. And then some of the game mechanics can seem really unfair sometimes.
MvC2, nice. Always fun to see a classic brought back.
Shame about Melee, but it was inevitable.
@JR150 Yeah I'm excited for Under Night to come to Switch. Do you know if it will have crossplay with PS4 or not?
Does anyone know why mk was cut?
@Saro Also, now that I think about it, were you trying to imply that Melee and Ultimate communities cannot coexist in the same tournament? Do you not realize that almost every major smash tournament features both Melee and Ultimate? It's always been this way and there is rarely any issues. In fact, the two games compliment each other quite well at Smash events
@cryptologous too soon for a season 4 to be announced. I'd love a Tekken 7 port, though. Perhaps an "Ultimate edition" with all content from S1 thru S3?
Anywaym that game is so good I woudn't be surprised if it make it to EVO next year once again.
Think Smash Ultimate as Melee with more characters, more stages and more polish. What’s really the point of Melee being there when it’s technically a lesser Ultimate that is ROUGH around the edges.
Nice. I wonder which games will meet higher online audiences.
@Zacattack99 Melee has widely different mechanics and much heavier gravity. Combine these two things and you get a very different competitive game than Ultimate. Both games are good in there own ways, and Ultimate is definitely not an "upgraded Melee". Project M was debatably an "upgraded Melee".
@JR150 a collection would be nice. I would love to play X-men vs Street Fighter again. All I had back in the day was that crappy PlayStation version. 😑
@Snivy102; you’re missing the point. At least Ultimate had almost 8 years (base game and it’s DLC and Smash for Wii U and it’s DLC) and then some to develop and be fine-tuned while Melee was developed in less than a year, and is, again; rough as a result.
@Zacattack99 You think Melee rough? I think Ultimate is rough compared to Melee.
Examples:
Set dash dancing compared to Melee's free dash dancing. Characters in Ultimate lose their running momentum when they jump, whereas Melee characters all keep their momentum into the air. Much more landing lag all around in Ultimate making a lot of aerial moves just plain bad, whereas in Melee every character except G&W can cancel 50% of their aerial attack landing lag making even low tiers feel good to play. Ultimate's buffer system is the worst in the entire series (look it up if you don't know what I'm talking about), often screwing up combos and other precise inputs. I can explain how wavedashing drastically improves the player's movement options, but wavedashing is probably the last thing you want to hear me talk about
@Luigivaldo an ultimate edition would save me a fortune, my wallet weeps every time I have to fish out money for all the DLC when buying new setups for locals!
@Zacattack99 Melee and Ultimate are about as similar as Street Fighter is to Guilty Gear. It's half the reason Melee and Smash 4 were able to share an EVO stage at all. No other franchise has had that luxury in recent history. Even though the jump from Street Fighter 4 to Street Fighter 5 completely polarised the fanbase, it still wasn't enough of a jump to give the Street Fighter community two spots at EVO. Melee and Ultimate have hardly any player crossover, quite small wider community crossover, and are only united sentimentally through Nintendo and logistically through shared tournaments, with both titles having their own independent circuits.
Not really sure what development cycles and fine tuning have to do with Snivy's points. A game can be an enticing and unique competitive experience and be rough around the edges at the same time lol.
@Snivy102 While I just spent a para sending fire at Zac, none of your points make Ultimate out to be a worse game. You just note differences. A lot of people (see: a LOT of people) love Ultimate's pace and neutral. Even with L cancelling, a lot of Melee aerials are still unsafe on shield. While the buffer system indeed has its downsides for certain aspects of play, it also allows Ultimate to have some very unique and creative combo routes not seen in other Brawl-based titles. Wavedashing absolutely increases movement options, but that doesn't necessarily mean it makes the game better, otherwise we wouldn't see companies like ArcSys move towards a slower, more footsies-based style of play in Granblue Vs and Guilty Gear Strive than what they've done in the past with mainline GG and BB titles or the recent DBFZ.
@cryptologous I actually like Ultimate. I was just trying to prove that Melee certainly isn't "rough"
@PBandSmelly "Vision and Colossus"? Dude, it's not a great look when you reinforce the negative stereotype that Nintendo fans are totally ignorant about games that don't get released on Nintendo systems.
Vision has never been in a Marvel vs. Capcom game, and Colossus isn't really a standout character in MVC2. The most common team is Storm/Sentinel/Magneto. MVC2 is renowned for being extremely fast-paced and exciting, in fact it moves much quicker than Melee or Smash Ultimate, so I don't really see how anyone could call it a borefest. Just because you're not familiar with the game doesn't make it boring.
No Power Rangers Battle for the Grid? What a shame.
@Snivy102 wasn't implying anything. I'm an outsider to the fighting game community, but I swore I heard about that chanting happening in Evo. I have a bad impression about Melee players due to local players being elitists about it, and all they focus is Fox and Falco. Sorry for any confusion, and unintentional disrespect.
@PsychoJosh
I meant cyclops
@PBandSmelly Oh you did not. And Cyke isnt that great either.
You shouldve been around for the 94 Xmen cartoon. Then youd know them all by heart.
@PsychoJosh
I meant cyclops cuz of the laser eye things and my head went to vision because of the recent show bruh
@cryptologous, I was talking about development time between the 2 games; citing Melee’s 13-month cycle and in an era of no updates and comparing that to Ultimate’s development lasting 3 years and then some (for patches and DLC) and adding the 3-so years of development time on the Wii U game, since it ended being used as the base for Ultimate as we know it. (thusly a combined near-8 years of development) That’s only to show the difference between a game that was rushed and rough and a well-refined game both overall and mechanically speaking.
Getting back to my original point; I was also implying about the size of Ultimate’s current 81-fighter roster (which is Melee’s whole roster and 55 other characters), and the tournament friendly stage line-up picked out of the current 108 stages. (or 321 when counting forms) That’s where the whole idea of “Melee is a lesser Ultimate” comes from.
@PBandSmelly I dont buy it. In any case Cyclops isnt a major player in MVC2.
Why don't you get into fighting games? They're fun
@PsychoJosh
You are making a lot of assumptions. I used to play MVC2 a LOT. I was obsessed. But all the games just seemed to have the same matchups and same meta and I got bored.
@PsychoJosh
Just because I accidentally said the wrong name doesnt mean I am a "fake fan". Why arr you getting so mad, calm down kid
@PBandSmelly I dont believe a word you said
@PsychoJosh
Stay mad I suppose
