If you're still thinking about how you might like to buy Animal Crossing: New Horizons for Nintendo Switch, you might want to add another 'pro' to the digital version argument.
Nintendo has revealed, via its official North American Animal Crossing website, that picking up a digital copy of the game by 30th April will also net you a code for a 7-day trial of the Nintendo Switch Online service. You'll be able to use that online subscription to play with online friends, inviting them to come and stay at your island. Here's Nintendo's wording:
Purchase the digital version by 4/30/2020 and receive a code for a free 7-day trial of Nintendo Switch Online. With Nintendo Switch Online, up to eight players can have fun hanging out together on one island at the same time with online play! Terms apply.
At the time of writing, we're not sure if this applies to all regions or just North America, so those of you in Europe might want to hold off before assuming this to be accurate worldwide. Of course, there are plenty of options if you want to buy a physical copy instead.
If that's not enough, we've also stumbled across lots of lovely merch and fan-made Etsy goodies for the new game. We're spoiled for choice!
Let us know whether you're planning on going physical or digital for New Horizons with a comment below.

Going digital. I'm just going to be playing it so much I can't see any other choice.
Yes, this is best deal ever. Thank you Nintendo.
Nah I'm good lol
I'd rather have double the gold coins
Already paying for a yearly family subscription. Besides, if I went digital and only had a copy for myself that my wife couldn't play on her Switch, she'd kill me. No choice but to get the physical version this time.
Besides, buying Animal Crossing just to get a 7-day free trial of NSO? That's like buying a hamburger and getting a free pickle to put on it. Inevitably, you're left wanting more pickles, but having to pay extra.
@nintendork64 My wife would kill me if I didn't buy her her own copy.
Half of me regrets buying it physical but the other half of me doesn't.
I got new leaf digital for free on release (promotion at the time were you buy 2 select games physical or digital and get 1 game free from the selected games).
NSO Game Vouchers were such a steal, lucky to have bought them while they were on sale using eShop gift cards from Costco, believe I saved $40 in the process.
Digital for AC
7 day trial is such a bad joke it shouldn't even be mentioned. For a game like Animal Crossing that should be standard in the hopes that people pay up when it expires and they miss the online aspect.
This isn't even worth promoting for them, it will get more blowback than additional sales. As @frogopus says, it's 38c, or really closer to zero as you can get a 7 day trial whenever you want with 100 platinum coins, and those are easy to get..
It wouldn't be worth much more with a 30 day subscription, but that has value. I wouldn't even market it as a free trial, b/c free adds no value, but as a subscription, b/c that costs $3.99, so it's easy to see the value and market it.
But a lot of people are going to want this digitally anyway, and the physical swag, so they may be able to sell both copies regardless. But I still don't consider a 7 day trial as any type of marketable incentive.
@rjejr Never thought I'd see the day gamers complain about something being free.
Sounds good for those who prefer digital, or want ACNH digitally. I prefer physical media.
I don't think it's supposed to add value or convince anyone to buy the digital version, it's just meant to get people to buy a subscription.
Thanks but no thanks. I am gonna go physical
@k8sMum That must be the shortest comment allowed by NL law. Either that or they must really like you. 😁
Are you an AC person? Is this day 1 for you? I'm squarely on the fence after the Direct. Never been my thing before but I'm thinking the stress relief may do me some good. I'll have to play on mute though as those voices are nails on a chalkboard to my ears. 🔕
@mesome713 You must be new here, gamers complain about free stuff ALL THE TIME.
Examples are:
Too late, I'm already done w/ the game.
Should have been included in the game.
Too ugly too even bother.
Stop supporting "woke" folk if it has anything to due wih equality.
I honestly don't think I've ever seen anything free that didn't get at least 1complaint, no matter how ridiculous that complaint may be. ALWAYS.
I am sure if this offer applies in Europe as well it will not be until 4/30/2020 but it will certainly be until 30/4/2020
While I prefer physical games, based on what others are saying I went digital. I’ve never played an AC game but this seems like a time sink (which I’m totally cool with) but I don’t want to have to load in and load out games. Super pumped for this game though!
@mesome713 he complains all the time been like that for years
7 days .... woweeeeeeee. Joking aside I’m buying digital either way, even though a huge fan as myself would LOVE all those physical goodies to go along with the game. I may double-dip down the road just so have a proper box for my shelf 🤷♂️
@rjejr
Yeah, I tried just writing digital and got a notice asking if I didn't want to say more, heheh.
I'm definitely an AC person. I love the game. It's really no more nor less a waste of time than any other sim. The extra creativity allowed in New Horizons is amazing. I'm used to the voices so they no longer bother me.
My Bill passed away a year ago the 28th. I'm desperate for a game I can really escape into with a minimum of stress. Sleep is sometime elusive now and I love that The game is in real time...I play and it's nite there too. I'm pre-ordering it next week so I'm ready to go at (I'm assuming) midnight.
I hope you'll give it a try. It's surprising how involved you get in your little kingdom.
Going digital for this one- I plan on playing pretty much daily, and don't want to swap out cartridges all the time. This is a nice little bonus!
@nintendork64 You can buy the digital version, and both you and your wife can play the game on both of your Switches... at the same time. That's what I'm doing with ours. Cheers.
@frogopus I agree w/ a lot of what you said - I'm in the market for a car 😝 - but in this instance I still think it comes across all wrong.
First, the aunts and grandma's aren't buying digital, so this doesn't really apply to them, only to the knowledgeable us.
Second, the "by 4/30/20" for a 7 day code seems a bit hard sell trying to sell nothing. If it was "all digital copies" come w/ a 7 day trial then fine. But putting a 5 week deadline on a 7 day free trial, why?
So I agree with you in theory, AC isn't for the hardcore, it's a gift for the kids, but a digital only 7 day free trial w/ a drop dead date of 5 weeks seems horrible in practice. The only people this is aimed at are the people who are gojng to laugh at it.
Nah.
I play the games physically.
I have subcribed NSO also.
Physical rules as always ! 🤟
@k8sMum Sorry about your Bill. Glad you have a game coming to enjoy.
It's funny how I so quickly went from - I don't want this, there's nothing to it - to - I'm afraid if I get this I'll be so addicted I'll never do anything else.
I'm still undecided, I know the euphoria from the Direct will need a couple of days to wear off then I'll see where I stand. Still, this could be just what I need. First though I'm going to go download One Piece Pirate Warriors 3 for $11.99 and singlehandedly destroy armies of 1000 enemies. I think it will be a long while before we get an Animal Crossing musou game. 😂
@rjejr
"AC isn't for the hardcore."
Really ?
Look at my gameplay hours on ACNL.
Also, i have 3 copies of ACNL in physical (2 ACNL, 1 ACNL Welcome Amiibo) with 3 different towns, different native fruits, different fates.
Yes, purchase Animal Crossing: New Horizons digitally and we'll thrown in...for FREE no less...a seven-day trial for a service that mostly doesn't even work with it anyway! Wattadeeaall!!!!!!
My last post aside, I did pre-order the digital version simply because I know AC: New Horizons is a game I'll probably be going back to on a daily basis (and that'll save constant cartridge-swapping). As for the code for the seven-day trial for Switch Online, I'll be frank: why bother to activate something I'd have to manually cancel again within a week not to be automatically billed, especially when it's as woefully lacking in value as it is? Its cloud saves feature doesn't even work with some first-party games, and that is absolutely inexcusable.
Doesn’t NSO already have a 7-day free trial?
Like Iwata once said, buying a digital version of Animal Crossing is the better option.
@rjejr I read all of your answers and I have to confess that I am amazed and shocked with your way of thinking. I finally came to the conclusion that you cannot be serious writing all these wierd things, therefore I assume that you are just joking and you need to become better into telling good jokes until everyone can really laugh.
@Haida when were they on sale? I don't think my Costco even has them.
@rjejr
"So I agree with you in theory, AC isn't for the hardcore, it's a gift for the kids,"
Them's fightin' words, friend!
I'm at the final boss in DQXIS, then I know there's a ton of after game stuff. It's probably my favourite game. Ever. But this non-hardcore 'kid' will enjoy the hell out of AC, too.
Will you dress up for your pirate game, eye patch and parrot???
Find it hilarious that it comes with a 7 day trial for Nintendo Switch Online and I'll be buying the game digitally with the Game Vouchers that required me to have NSO already in order to get. So this free trial is pretty much useless to me.slow clap Nintendo
Always appreciate free stuff but:
In England so may not apply to me.
Got nso anyway
Buying digitally anyway.
@frogopus "It's probably not the most effective sale, but I'm sure they're doing it with data and reason... probably more than people give them credit for."
Well I rarely give them credit. Been following them for over a dozen years and everything they do seems to just confuse me more. I know a lot of it has to do w/ me being a yank and them being Japanese but I do find it easier to follow Sony logic usually. Of course Pushquare keeps telling me Sony is a western company now, so there ya go I guess.
Let's just put it this way, I have a whole lot more respect for the guy who came up w/ the title and movie VelociPastor than I do for the guy who thought 7 days of NO for the first 5 weeks was a great marketing campaign.
Movie looks like trash, but that name is gold.
Edit: Yeah on 2nd thought maybe a bit too much for NL.
@Anti-Matter I have over 500 hours playing Gems of War on Switch and even I'm not calling that a hardcore game or me a hardcore gamer.
I bet Candy Crush leads the world in game hours played, more than GTAV, more than PacMan, more than Tetris, probably 10 million housewives playing Candy Crush all day, every day. Doesn't make them hardcore. At least not in my book.
@Cosats Maybe you need to read more Bukowski? 🤣
Buying it physical, because I still don't know if I'll get bored with this game in a week or so. >.<
Remember when Nintendo gave a $5 discount to people who downloaded New Leaf at launch?
@rockodoodle was referring to $50 eShop gift cards sold at Costco which are still $44.99.
7 day trial? How about just giving us double gold coins for preordering?
I don't care about playing online so I'm going physical
@rjejr I have read a lot of Νίκος Καζαντζάκης and I can understand you perfectly.
@Haida I will take a look! Never noticed them.
