As you've probably already heard by now, later this week a Pokémon Direct is airing. It will apparently feature "roughly 20 minutes" of new Pokémon information in a live stream presentation. This is definitely odd timing, considering Pokémon Sword and Shield were only released last November, so what exactly is this upcoming broadcast focused on?
If you were hoping for details about future remakes of the older Pokémon RPG, try not to get your hopes up. According to Twitter user @Ruki185, the German press release "specifically states" the presentation will be sharing "new details" about Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield. This information was allegedly spotted on the German press release, which was retrieved from the German NoE press server.
As the Twitter user who shared this information seems to be in question, we'll tag this as a rumour for now. In saying this, we would be surprised if we didn't get at least some new information linked to S&S or new details about Pokémon Home - a storage solution designed to connect with the modern Pokémon titles.
The Pokémon Direct will be streamed live at 6:30am PT on 9th January (so that's 9:30am ET / 2:30pm GMT / 3:30pm CET), will you be tuning in? Leave a comment down below.

Yay... I guess, not that excited.
Sword and shield let me down already and news about the game is guaranteed to underwhelmed me unless they are bringing back the Pokémon they kicked out.
Seeing as how removing them didn't really improve the game.
I just don't understand why.
I can't wait for them to announce stuff that should've been in the game since the beginning
Guess it will be about DLC and probably Home as well. That makes sense. It was far too early for them to reveal the next mainline titles, anyway. The only thing that is awkward is that they'll have to reveal those in a second Pokemon Direct in a couple of months from now or so.
Lemme guess, new mythicals or dexit pokemon coming back. Either way nobody gives a crap
GIGAMAX NIDOKING!
that's all i ask for
Instead of a third version they might just do it through a DLC pack. Nintendo have got right into DLC on Switch so it would make sense.
@nessisonett Not sure why you're being down voted but anyway, it would certainly tick people off if they just did digital DLC for the "second game"
Probably 99% it will talk about Pokemon Home, additional Pokemons outside Galar Pokedex and a new Pokemon game in working (Pearl / Diamond Remake).
Fix the appalling online trading system?
I'm so sick of people begging for DLC (this is in reference to paid DLC as opposed to new content via patches). But I'm also not keen on lofty patches for the mainland Pokémon games (fortunately, the Let's Go patches were quite small) as those of us with both versions will have more space consumed by what should have been on the cartridge in the first place. Many of us don't buy what is essentially the same game twice to pay for DLC on top of that! If the mainland games ever go in that direction, that would irreparably destroy whatever goodwill I have had for the brand. Forget Dexit; paid DLC is where I draw the line with the Pokémon games. It's bad enough that we now have to pay for online just for bare bones trading/battling functionality when there were no further charges incurred in previous generations.
Game Freak had already lied to us about Pokémon Bank (which is a paid "service", mind) claiming that we will be able to transfer our Pokémon to future games. The last two games have had no Bank functionality whatsoever, and considering the substantial exclusions from the Pokédex in those games, (referring to Let's Go and Sword/Shield) Bank would be quite limited even if compatibility with the Switch games had been implemented. I'd prefer that Game Freak just give us more in-game Box storage instead (which would hardly occupy any storage space and require very little effort from the developers).
I'm not opposed to Nintendo offering a discount to those who have purchased the game via the eShop to purchase an enhanced version of the game, for example. With physical releases, fair enough, we have a tangible copy of the game that can be shared with multiple consoles/users. Quite frankly, I think it's ridiculous that Nintendo charge full price via the eShop for the second version if somebody had already bought one (Game Freak should produce a slightly-more-expensive-than-the-standalone digital-exclusive consolidated version that allows the user to choose which version they want to play upon booting the software so that it doesn't occupy double the space for what is essentially the same game, or at least allow the same NNID to be able to purchase the second version at a substantially reduced price).
All I want is an update that removes absolutely everything in the game and replaces it with something better. Not asking for much.
@Silly_G At this point, gamefreak should stop releasing the second games amd just add all the extras as DLC.
@Silly_G Your comment vanished but I was going to say that they should have delayed the game anyway, we didn't need it now and it's so rushed, it shows.
@Kalmaro : Or they can delay the game a bit and have it all in the base build. By "second game", I assume you're referring to sequels/enhanced versions as opposed to a second version.
Game Freak seldom releases enhanced versions nowadays, and I don't have a problem with them as they plug the gaps between releases, and those not wanting to experience much of the same can just skip them, though I would prefer any additional versions to be more along the lines of Black 2/White 2 (which were sequels) as opposed to Platinum/Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon (enhanced versions with new content that is negligible at best).
I'm only at the fourth gym, but honestly I think there's a lot to like in SnS. People keep focusing on the problems rather than the good stuff it has in it. That sort of perspective's just bound to make you miserable :/
@Silly_G I never saw much purpose in the enhanced games, they seemed more like "This is what we wanted at first but ran out of time for".
@Kalmaro : They're an easy way to make a lot of coin with minimal effort while teaching novice staff the ropes (as it had been disclosed that predominantly younger staff were working on Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon given that it was comprised of mostly pre-existing assets).
And it exploits die-hard fans starved for a new release on those years when a new game isn't available.
@TeslaChippie We just decided to weigh both and, in our opinions, found that the bad outweighs the good
@Silly_G That is both evil and smart, which is a scary combination.
“New clothing and accessories!”
@Kalmaro : And I get sucked in every time due to my poor self-control and irrational love of Pokémon.
@LUIGITORNADO : Me, me, me, I want it, I want it, I want it!
Eh idc I just want a normal direct and they announce the final fighter dlc for smash and news on botw2
@Silly_G Pokémon is awesome! I just don't like the direction they are taking their games lately. I really want another mystery dungeon now.
Of course there will be something about Sword and Shield. Doesn't take a server hack to figure that out...
Seems all but certain they will mainly talk about Pokemon Home. I'd be okay with DLC, paid or otherwise, so long as it was comparable to DLC we've had with games like Xenoblade 2, FE3H, and BotW.
What I don't expect are any new game announcements. No Let's Go Gold/Silver and no Diamond Pearl remakes. Not yet It seems far too early for that.
@Franklin what's your beef with the trading system? I've had no issues with it. Share a simple 4 digit number with another person and then trade.
@Heavyarms55 didn't they remove GTS?
@Kalmaro : It wouldn't surprise me if they do in fact announce a spin-off or two in the direct as there hasn't been a Mystery Dungeon game in nearly 7 years (jeez, how quickly time flies), or maybe Dexit was a convenient excuse for Game Freak to sell a Pokémon Stadium-style game with the complete (or mostly complete) roster intact.
Again, I'm thoroughly unexcited after their "big" generation debut turned out to be a dud. Unless these "new details" are a major DLC pack that adds a ton of new content to compensate for how empty and rushed SwSh feels, there's nothing they can announce at this point that would actually change my view on this series. And even then, if they end up charging us a hefty sum for such DLC (which they probably would because LOL you'll pay for whatever we tell you to) just for it to feel like it has as much content as past games, then it'll be the scummy kind of DLC where we're paying more money for the same content we used to get.
@Silly_G Well whatever they add better be substantial if they want my money, not that they probably care much. They already know they can offer less and get paid more.
@TeslaChippie Well, you could elaborate on what are you liking right now ... and I'll elaborate and what I didn't like and what I liked...
But since I just finished the game.... the bad really outweighs the good ... by a wide margin.
@Silly_G Oh lord, please don’t announce Battle Revolution 2 😂😂
There goes my hopes for Pokken content...
@Kalmaro I could maybe see them adding something popular like the Battle Frontier as DLC, plays to nostalgia, would be late-game and wouldn’t be too difficult to implement. Especially considering how conspicuously absent it was from OR/AS.
@nessisonett That would make sense, but that would have to be free. No way they'd make people pay for that, it would be nuts!
@JR150 Man I'd kill for Pokkén news...
@Kalmaro Eh, GTS isn't all that good anyway. Ever see the state of Sun/Moon Gts nowadays? Chock full of hacked pokemon and people putting in low-level pokemon and asking for Legendaries or other unreasonable pokemon. Until GF finds a way to fix that system (And possibly find a way to easily identify and ban hacked pokemon), I see no future for GTS
And here I am still crossing my fingers for POKÉMON SNAP 2.
@Heavyarms55
Basically because it's not this:
https://m.bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Global_Trade_System
Unless I've yet to unlock something.
@SolarisPolaris Nah, I haven't looked lately, it's a shame if the entire thing is ruined now. Hopefully there still some good people on there.
@Franz : I can see that happening, complete with a tacky peripheral that resembles a Fisher Price toy to stick the Joy-Con in to simulate a camera (perhaps also compatible with the Labo camera).
Meanwhile, those playing in handheld mode can use the inbuilt gyro controls of the console if they so choose.
Sold the game already... apart from the gym battles this game is bad
@Kalmaro
I get that it may not have sold well. It just sucks that the Pokemon game that tried to innovate and mix things up ultimately didn't amount to much. I'd love for more DLC like Hawlucha, Incineroar, and Dragonite. But I guess it was just a one-off thing that they'll never touch again. After all, Sw/Sh sold 6 million in less than a week so why bother...
@JR150 The majority have spoken, they don't want games that have been polished over a longer period of time and have all of the older Pokémon, they just want a Pokémon game in general. It's a shame but that's where we are.
@Kalmaro The problem is that you never know if that Lvl 100 shiny that someone painstakingly trained is legitimate or just a 10 min hacked shiny. It comepletely sucks...
@Kalmaro The problem is that you never know if that Lvl 100 shiny that someone painstakingly trained is legitimate or just a 10 min hacked shiny. It completely sucks...
@SolarisPolaris speaking personally of it has all the correct stats so that it is identical to a normally caught/hatched shiny, I wouldn't mind.
If it's obviously hacked then yeah, I'd be upset.
@Kalmaro Well, I guess that's my own gripe then.
Oh yeah, want to know another way Sun Gts is broken? In the system you can ask for impossible pokemon, like a gendered ditto or male Blissey. This means that 50% of pokemon in Gts are Display-Case Pokemon, as those pokemon can never be traded, even if you try hacking in a impossible pokemon.
@KnightsTemplar
In your opinion. I played 2 hours of The Witcher 3 and I didn’t like it. Doesn’t mean the game is bad.
@SolarisPolaris Gross, THAT would annoy me if a lot of people are going that.
@Fandabidozi Well two things yes, then saying the game was bad is their opinion.
That said, when did they say time was a factor? All the said was that the only good parts of the game were the gym battles.
@Fandabidozi compared to older pokemon games... its not up to par
@KnightsTemplar
I think you’ve been spending too much time on the Internet. 😉
I’m doubting there will be DLC but I won’t complain if so. I’ve passed the 100 hour mark with this game and am still enjoying it, especially raid battles.
Maybe the high sales of Sword and Shield will motivate them to update the game with DLC, possibly a season pass, that adds more areas, Pokémon, post-game content, etc.
It would certainly be better than another full-priced "special edition".
Also, this year's Pokémon is probably going to be "Let's Go 2", if I had to bet, and they wouldn't want the games cannibalizing each other's sales.
Adding to the game with substantial DLC would also go a long way toward winning back the goodwill of fans who felt they were burned by this game.
They were just kidding about fishious rend?
@TeslaChippie I put in 60 hours by the time I had beaten the game, filled the Dex, and bred my next team for my 2nd playthrough. The internet crybabies are definitely low in number as this game is performing quite well and honestly, one of the better Pokémon titles in recent years. Yes they have their shortcomings but they're still good games, these people are just mad it's selling well.
@TeslaChippie heck, I'm still raking the grass in the first routes and the adjacent towns, and already getting a load of positive impressions across the board. And I'm not even in the Wild Area yet.
The mons are already getting sassy, too. A level 5 squirrel, pffff... wait, what do you mean it just munched a berry (AND doubled its restorative effect) inbetween a Double Kick's consecutive hits?😮😆
Ultra Sword and Ultra Shield? If they do that then it needs to be DLC rather than a second game like the 3DS games. Surely all the DLC haters would prefer DLC to paying full price for version 1.5?
Imagine if the players now have to pay for all the rest of the Pokémon per DLC.
If it is going to a paid dlc with features that should have been there in the first place, I am gonna puke 🤮
They should announce new mystery dungeon and new battle revolution, and that Nintendo bought Creatures (as was rumored lately) and now force game freak to make higher quality games Pokémon games
@TeslaChippie Everything is fine and dandy when you're at the 4th gym, you've yet to reach the unfinished towns for a start (Such shamefully wasted potential...), when you're going through the story it's all good, i felt that way around Gym 4 too.
It's when you finish the 8th gym, Max raids are impossible to solo (And almost as hard to find players for), and battle tower isn't that great either, that basically the bottom falls out of the whole thing...
What an shock. Nobody was expecting this.
Btw slow news day nl?
@Franklin I've never seen the Pokemon Trades Subreddit so busy. If only there was a way of seeking something specific in game... Like a GTS...
When it comes to Sword and Shield, I just want my Pokemon to walk next to me like in Let's Go Pikachu. Is that too much to ask for?!
@Kalmaro Why would you be worries about losing the GTS, it was just full of fake pokemon, it is pretty safe to say that pokemon bank is pretty full of fake pokemon too. This is why I don't understand why you and others keep on moaning, the short of it is that they have a problem in trying to get rid of the bad from the past. And look I have a bank too with stuff I transferred from the original sapphire games so yes I would like to know what is going to happen.
Your also wasting your breath with sword and sheild, there good games, deal with it!
@Archius9
I've enjoyed the main game mostly, but lack of GTS is a huge step backwards for the series and left me aghast.
@dew12333 Do you really, honestly think that SwSh trading isn't full of hacked pokemon?
People are selling hacked pokemon on eBay too (Shiny starters, perfect IVs, level 100, more than 10 available, seems dodgy to me), so if removing GTS was to stop hacked pokemon, and that's a mighty big "if" right there, then it failed miserably.
tune in for a snorefest
@Kalmaro
The new details are that original forms of Galarian Pokémon are getting patched out.
Maybe some more "mystery gifts"?
A rare rattata that knows bubble?
@dew12333 Just in response to the statement "Your also wasting your breath with sword and sheild, there good games, deal with it!"
No, they aren't.
@dew12333
Good games as long as your favorite Pokémon makes the cut.
Watch as whatever your fave is gets shafted for the Sinnoh remakes. You'll have no qualms whatsoever over joining the Dexers by then.
@THE_INFAMOUS
Judging by the amount of cut Pokémon, no, it's not too much to ask for. Not in the slightest.
@nessisonett
Well yeah, I would pay a bit of extra for the missing Pokémon.
There, I said it. I mean, it's Pokémon - they know they can charge whatever the hell they want for it. Just as long as it's Pokémon - the series that has many creatures in every game, not "the series that has many but not as many creatures in every game".
@SolarisPolaris
I haven't had any problems with my GTS-obtained Pokémon before, I doubt I will start acting haughty over hacked Pokémon now just for the sake of having something to defend SwSh with.
@MysticX
'They failed miserably' - really, so are there rom cards, cloning etc. available for sword and shield. You cannot say for one minute that we have the same situation.
@frabbit Obviously you can have your opinion on the games the same as I can. But the review scores, metacritic etc. all give it a score which a least says it's a good game. Maybe not the best but again thats always personal opinion.
@AlexSora89 Gorbyss and Huntail already got dropped and I'm still loving it. And the GTS was a an embarrassment to the games maker and people who feel proud of their fake shiny pokemon should be proud of their achievements gained from diligent hard work playing the games, not!
I'm betting for something that was already shown in the leaks but hasn't been included yet. And maybe, just maybe, 4th gen remake reveal
I'm pretty sure Nintendo just misspelled 'Pikmin'.
@AlexSora89 Ha!
@dew12333 Your opinion is noted. It's clear you are enjoying Sword and Shield and I would never take that from you. However, trying to say my or anyone else's opinion is less valid than yours is a good way to get people not to take your opinion seriously.
Game Freak/TPC are really gonna get it short of announcing all Dexit Pokemon back
Some people are expecting the 4th gen remake, and if it's this soon, I can't see it being any much better than S&S, will probably take the same exact souped up 3DS graphics with massive texture issues here and there and will probably be missing 'mons
They're not going to get out of the direct looking like winners that's for sure and that'll probably start a new wave of people being angry at them
A patch to make them game acceptable? Haven't bothered with it yet, will consider if I'm right.
@Kalmaro Watch it, they are going to announce the national pokedex as a $20 DLC pack
@Lojod my pitchfork is ready.
Pokemon Direct is about Sw/Sh? Everyone break out your torches. My pitchfork's on loan right now, anyone have one I can borrow? I vote for @Kalmaro as mob leader. Remember everyone, follow your mob leader's instructions, don't get distracted arguing about side projects like Sleep, and we'll all have a lovely Poke-riot, ok?
@nessisonett
You're saying that like it's a bad thing.
@Kalmaro
I hope they announce an update where they remove another 200 Pokemon and give you whiners super detailed Pokemon and the best trees ever featured in a video game.
unless they bring back the national dex for free or make HOME f2p with an offline mode i don't see this going to well.
though the pokemon cultist will be thrilled no matter what comes of it, their a lot like apple cultist in that regard....
It would be a waste if those 20 minutes are just them telling us they are gonna fix that mouse cursor in the ending. Why waste our time on that when you could had just utter five words for 5 seconds (the National Dex is Here) which would be a million times more worth it than 20 minutes of nothing?
@Nintyfan
Ok gamefreak bot
@Old_Man_Nintendo You sound upset, I hope whatever happened to you gets resolved and you have a wonderful day.
Also, this is a family website, no swearing, please.
As a casual player but very big Pokemon fan I can say that I was disappointed in how long I was able to keep playing. The game didn't make it to December before being archived after beating it completely (full dex).
If they can bring me back I'll be surprised.
@dew12333 I’m not talking about flashcards though, i’m saying that any attempts at stopping hacked pokemon seem to have failed in SwSh, so if removing GTS was for that purpose, it was a bad trade-off.
@PBandSmelly the sales for the game makes your comment pointless
@dew12333 sales son sales best selling in the series just goggled and in the u.s. sword and shield are the best selling pokemon game in the series
@Kalmaro I am sorry if you feel I am questioning your opinion, I wouldn't want to do that. But how do you think your many comments bemoaning the games are coming across, if you keep saying something does it mean it becomes true after so many?
@MysticX There is literally no one who seems to able to stop hacking completely. As much as I used the GTS it just wasn't a biggie for me, what did you love so much about it?
@dew12333 No, me repeating something does not make it more or less true. That's why I typically just point out irrefutable facts, like the game being rushed, content being removed but for reasons not mentioned, etc.
I point it out because I'm dissatisfied with what gamefreak has done, but I still hope people enjoy what they've purchased.
@Kalmaro
I honestly had to re-read my comment like 10 times to figure out where I swore. Apparently it's too rough for you? You then need to disconnect from the internet
@Old_Man_Nintendo Hmm, I'm going to end this conversation now, I'm not the one you need to worry about and this is getting off topic.
@dew12333 It was simple, and it worked, inbetween the “I want a L100 Arceus for my Pidgey”-trades were plenty of trades with more realistic demands, or putting a trade up myself and keeping on playing while somebody (hopefully) took it, and all without needing a subreddit or Discord server to make arrangements!
You know what, forget SW SH. We need a new Colosseum game, plain and simple.
My guess is that the Sword/Shield details will just be unveiling the gigantamax forms that are currently unavailable.
@Old_Man_Nintendo : The writers on the site occasionally use the word "crappy" which constitutes PG-rated "mild bad language" according to the BBFC (the UK classification board), so I'm not quite sure what constitutes unacceptable cursing around here as the "poo" word (and its variants) are also considered mild (and is permitted at PG in most jurisdictions), but is usually censored in these parts. The b-word is generally flagged as "moderate" (12-rated) language in the UK, at least when used as an insult, but when used as a colloquial verb or adjective (as you have used it), is considered mild and in the same league as "crappy", and if used in its literal sense, is not considered to constitute profanity at all.
I'm not nitpicking anything that you've said; just that what constitutes profanity around here is highly subjective and inconsistent with what classification boards consider suitable at the various categories.
@dew12333
"Dropped"? In what meaning of the word?
@Kalmaro
Well my comment aged horribly.
AND I LOVE IT.
@AlexSora89 Here's your chance, now we can pay more money to get more Pokémon! Woohoo!
@Kalmaro
At least we are getting some Pokémon back.
Which makes me wonder how deliberate the mismanagement of the pre-release SwSh marketing was.
@AlexSora89 I'm inclined to believe that they did this on purpose but that's just my opinion.
@Fandabidozi wtf does that mean. If the game aint good in my eyes.. im not allowed to share my opinions. Look ive played the crap out of sword and sheild. I tried to like it... these expansion passes just cause more frustration to a once great game
@Kalmaro
Looking back at it now that we know about Pokémon Home... yep. "Pokémon-as-a-service".
Despite the fact that the service is for games we pay for to begin with.
@AlexSora89 It's why I said before that gamefreak is holding Pokémon for ransom at this point.
You have to pay them money if you ever want to see your precious Pokémon again.
@Kalmaro
And if we don't, we wake up with a SLOWPOKETAIL in our bed.
(Wow: Galarian Slowpoke reference, Pokémon Gold and Silver reference, and The Godfather reference all in one joke. Gotta pat myself on the back for this one.)
