Today sees the launch of Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy – Deluxe Edition on Nintendo Switch, making it the first time that the Layton series has appeared on our favourite hybrid console.
You can catch the launch trailer for the game up above; the game brings Layton's popular puzzle-solving to the big screen, with tradition button controls and motion controls available to players as they crack each case. You may remember that this game actually originally appeared on Nintendo 3DS; this new Switch 'Deluxe' edition includes enhanced visuals and redesigned puzzles catered specifically for the console.
We think this latest entry is a pretty strong puzzle game that's definitely worth looking into, even if it doesn't quite live up to the heights of the best from the series. We'll leave a snippet of our review below, but make sure to check out our full thoughts before you go ahead and buy the game.
Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy – Deluxe Edition proves itself to be a strong puzzle game in its own right, although compared to the highs of its predecessors, it doesn’t nearly hold up as well. Even so, the pleasant visuals, wonderful writing, and (mostly) strong puzzle design make this an easy sell, even if the occasional missteps in some of the puzzle answers and the lack of compelling new features for this re-release prove to be drawbacks.
The game is available both digitally from the Switch eShop and physically in stores. Will you be grabbing Layton’s Mystery Journey on Switch? Tell us below.

I’ve never played a Layton game, and that trailer doesn’t do anything to make me want to. Decorate your agency? Change clothes? Sounds rather dull
@Bondi_Surfer I can imagine the trailer doesn't convince you. Perhaps I can. Layton games have a very compelling story, combined with absurd humor and dozens and dozens of challenging puzzles. If you don't like puzzle games, this isn't for you. If you like a challenging laid-back singleplayer game to accidentally spend 5-6 hours in a row on.. Go check them out.
I do have to say: the original Layton games have a more complicated main story arc, Katrielle's game has more of an 'episodic' feel to it's story. I prefer the first, some people prefer the latter.
@Bondi_Surfer I don't like most puzzle games because they usually consist of just one type of puzzle, but a Layton game is a cacophany of various puzzles, of which you will only see some repeat, such as "move two matchsticks to turn this fifteen into a twelve" most puzzles you will never see repeated again. These puzzles will help propel the narrative, which is usually quite good.
It's basically a box of brainteasers presented in a way only a video game can. If it still doesn't sound like your cup of tea, it probably isn't
@Fre4ked and @Chlocean
I love brain teasers and lateral thinking - so I’ll check the series out. The trilogies seemed more preferred based on the NL poll comments, so I’ll start there
Thank you!
I haven’t played any current Layton games. Played curious village and Pandora’s box. Do I need to play other games in the series to play this one?
Hopefully the original DS versions see the light of day on switch hopefully
i do adore the game, buuut as i played it on my 3ds (being new to this type of game) i gave up on it, because the puzzles we're too hard for me...so i cry knowing that i can never play the game knowing the difficulty. i wanna learn, but it's not gonna be soon.
