Update (11th Nov, 13:00 GMT): The Pokémon Sword and Shield Wild Area web app is now available to explore, allowing fans to track down some of their favourite Pokémon in a Google Maps-like diorama.
You can go ahead and visit the app for yourself here, although everything is presented in Japanese. You can explore the Wild Area using arrows to move around, or by dragging the screen to explore your current surroundings; when you spot a Pokémon, you can click on it to reveal information and - if you're lucky - a little animated movie which can be shared to social media.
It's not quite as exciting as catching the Pokémon and exploring properly - as you'll be able to do in the games - but at least it provides something for those unable to cope with the hype. Pokémon Sword and Shield launch this Friday, 15th November.
Original Article (Wed 16th Oct, 2019 15:50 BST): The Pokémon news just keeps coming today! Not only have brand new Gigantamax Pokémon forms been revealed, but now we have news of an online app which will let fans explore Pokémon Sword and Shield's Wild Area.
Scheduled to arrive in early November and to be available until 31st December, the new app will reportedly be known as 'Pokémon Wild Area Search' and will be available on PC, Mac, smartphones and tablets. It will allow fans to explore a diorama of the games' Wild Area and find various Pokémon within it.
The app will feature a 360-degree camera and will allow users to enjoy encounters with certain Pokémon in CG form. We're sure that more information on this will arrive in the near future, so we'll make sure to update you when we hear more details on exactly how you can check this out for yourself.
It seems The Pokémon Company is coming up with a nice variety of new tricks to keep the hype rolling for the new games; the start of the month also saw a 24-hour livestream take place, giving players a chance to check out Pokémon in the new location of Glimwood Tangle.
Do you like the sound of this idea? Do you think it could be a fun way to check out some of the new Pokémon coming to the games? Share your thoughts with us below.

Why not just spoil the whole game, TPC?
I’m just gonna ignore this one. If I explore it on the web, then what do I have to explore in game?
Edit: the diorama is cute though.
Is that just the web app or is that actually what it looks like ingame🤮
Why? This is coming out like a week or two before the games release? If its anything like the 24-hour livestream, I want no part in it. I'll check it out, but it sounds like a gimmick, and releasing the same time as the game itself, I don't see why I'd even need an app like this
Does this strike anyone else as desperately grasping at any straw that will lure Pokemon Go players to a main series game?
@SalvorHardin it’s not how it looks in game, it’s meant to look like a model diorama of the area. Like a kid might make for an art class.
They’re one step away from having the entire game available to play at your local WalMart. Do they not want people to buy and play the game themselves at this point?
You people saying they’ve revealed too much...
They’ve barely shown anything of relevance besides gimmicks and gen 1 pandering. We don’t even know what the starter evolutions look like. Showing us the Pokemon in the wild areas is a must, so that we can at least know which ones will make the cut.
TFW the promotional web app looks better than the actual game.
I can guarantee u can bring pokemon from this to the main games
I like how they show us stuff that are so cool and real then games.
@-Juice- Maybe that's all there is
@SalvorHardin web app, it's a diorama.
@-Juice- we won’t know what “makes the cut” until the games are out. They’re not going to outright reveal what ISN’T in the game, and, until people are playing the games, there’s no way to know if a Pokémon that wasn’t shown yet is in or not. There’s hundreds of Pokémon to go through and it’s just unrealistic to cover all the old stuff. If any cut Pokémon would affect your decision to buy the game, I’d highly recommend waiting until after release anyways. I care about new monsters though, and I want surprises. Each gen is having less new monsters than the last, so there might not be a lot of unrevealed new ones at this point, I’d rather they save the rest for surprises, including the starter evolutions (which used to not be revealed before release until more recent gens). As for showing this entire area before launch... it’s like showing the over world of Hyrule before BotW comes out, why just dump the biggest part of the map on players instead of letting them explore it organically? I feel like they’re trying to win over natdexers at this point (who likely don’t care about this anyways) by revealing as much of the new game as possible. If people are on the fence they don’t have to buy it at launch, information will flood out after release.
@ShadJV the whole game? The seeing the wild area is basically like looking at the roads of any other Pokemon game. It's like half the map, but mostly it's just how this game handles routes.
@Xansies I’m talking about with how they keep dumping information. I’m sick of this trend of revealing 75% of the Pokedex ahead of time and now they’re showing basically all the routes too.
@princezorldo While I understand the complaints about the national dex etc, it does feel like the community now has grown so toxic that it will grasp at any and all straws as a chance to bash on the game. I especially don't understand the complaint that they're showing too much. I mean we haven't even seen the starter evos! The game is a bit of a disappointment because it could have been more, but at the same time, I am excited all the same.
I will give it a go! Not for Pokemon locations, but just to get a feel of what scale the map will be.
So basically Pokémon Snap but on PC (and others)
@princezorldo Too late. It's everywhere. You aren't allowed to like this game. Gotta drown it in bile before it inevitably sells millions.
I am buying both versions.
@princezorldo
Well said, agree 100%.
@SalvorHardin It's just the web app.
@BigRed40 I mean, it seems like sun and moon but gyms are back. Sun and moon was probably the most the series had really changed since it started, it doesn't change much. I mean, it doesn't look bad at all, it looks like pokemon. I'm not too upset at it without playing it.
Though I don't care about the national dex at all. I don't have a bank full of every Pokemon since gen 1 and I'm not to into trading them so it doesn't really affect me at all. I'm willing to assume most players are in a similar boat so it makes sense on why they're cut
@Heavyarms55 Are there any bigger differences between the games than exclusive Pokémons? I think I will go with Sword.
@Quarth At least one gym leader is exclusive to each game. But like always, there is little real reason to get both. I just like having the option when I can, to replay a game without deleting the previous save file. Or to just do a trade evolution with myself instead of bothering something "can I trade you my Kadabra and trade back?" for the 11,000,000th time.
Also I caught the double pack on sale for like 20 dollars off.
@Heavyarms55 Thanks! Seems you got a good deal with the double pack.
I think I'll go with Sword because I like Sirfetch'd more than the Galarian Ponyta.
@Quarth Feel free to hit me up for a shield exclusive if you need one. I'm sure I could nab one for ya.
@Heavyarms55 Thanks! I have my friend code on my user page, if you'd like to add me.
@Quarth I think we're already Switch friends, I'm ジョセフ on Switch right now. Which is just my name in Japanese, Joseph.
@Heavyarms55 Aha! 😅 Yeah, wondered who that Japanese user was. Didn't know you lived there. Now I know!
@Heavyarms55 a nice thing with the switch is that you don't need to delete your save file to start a new game, you can just have another profile on your switch to start new games with
@StableInvadeel So long as you aren't playing Animal Crossing.
Gamefreak why do you do this?
Has this web app appeared yet?
I didn't realise how much the new flower Pokemon resembles Bellossom, could've been a new pre-evolution of Bellossom. Not that it makes any sense, but it looks more like Bellossom than Gloom does
This is a neat little advertising gimmick. But I'm hold off for the game. I don't mind having had the dex spoiled, but I do want to explore the wild area blind. I've managed to avoid most any story or world spoilers that weren't in the trailers.
@Octane That's a really good point. Gloom and Bellossom really do look almost nothing alike. Though I still say going from Trapinch to Flygon is the most jarring. At least both Gloom and Bellossom both look like plants. lol
@Heavyarms55 @Quarth I may add you both up aswell if you dont mind. I am also buying pokemon and I could do with a couple of people to possibly trade with. I only have 2 friends on my switch 😂
@Heavyarms55 Trapinch is based on an antlion, so it makes sense. Trapinch is the larval stage, which then develops into an adult flying insect, kinda resembling a lacewing.
I do like the weird evolutions though, and I always liked how Bellossom becomes pure Grass, as if it is somehow "purified" or something like that.
That website is using like 70% of my computer's CPU. Barely even running
@Kidfunkadelic83 Please do that! With a username that references Funkadelic I can't say no.
@Quarth I cant even remember how to add people 😂😂
@Kidfunkadelic83 Here's my friend code: SW-3941-9887-2293. Search for it via your user profile on your Switch.
@Quarth will do it when I get home 👍
@Kidfunkadelic83 Great!
@Kidfunkadelic83 Feel free to add me. My FC and discord are in my signature on the forums.
Why on earth have they used resources to do this! Who’s even asking for this?!
What a waste of man hours
how do you move around on mobile
I have to say, I really like the diorama style they used here. Looks really nice, although I have no interest in exploring the world through this web app. Solid effort nonetheless.
@ShadJV I'd say very little of the pokedex was actually officially put out this time. Unfortunately as it is lately the whole thing has been leaked at this point, but that's not per their choice. Heck I was super disappointed they didn't even officially reveal the starter evolutions and was forced to look at leaks in order to get an idea on which starter I wanted.
@Quarth FR sent buddy
