Motorsport enthusiasts who own a Switch no longer need to worry about how they'll get their regular dose of speed on the go now that GRID Autosport has been released. In our review, we gave the Feral Interactive port eight out of ten stars and said it was one of the best racing games on Nintendo's hybrid system to date.
The tech experts over at Digital Foundry have now gone one step further – praising it as "the best racing sim" they've played on the Switch so far. Not to be confused with the reboot GRID on Xbox One, PS4, and PC, GRID Autosport is described as a "deluxe conversion" of the last generation Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 title.
So, how does it hold up on Nintendo's device? The resolution docked runs at 1920 x 1080, or if you play in portable, you'll get a resolution of 1280 x 720. There's also a graphics and performance mode to select from within the game menus, and this will further alter the experience. Last of all is a bonus energy saver mode, which is exclusive to handheld play.
On the frame rate front, the game docked in graphics mode runs at a mostly stable 30fps, but can experience the occasional spike and dip. If you play in performance mode while docked, you can expect anywhere between 45 to 60 fps. In portable mode, the energy saver and graphics modes are much the same. As for the performance mode on the go, the frame rate is similar to the fps when docked.
Despite this, DF still considers this to be the best game within this genre that the Switch has to offer right now and it goes far beyond the last generation versions. While it might not be the latest entry in the series, it still does a fantastic job – offering HD texture packs, rumble support, motion controls, hundreds of cars and tracks, and a range of extra options.
Get the full rundown in the video above and tell us how your time on the track has been with GRID Autosport.

Now that is how you do a conversion.
Always nice to see a big publisher like Codemasters not skimping on the NX port.
Another showcase along with The Witcher 3 of what's possible on the machine.
An AA racing title with no breakdowns.
That PS4 footage of the new Grid game looks amazing. Switch should have got that instead.
I prefer the look of performance mode as well as the frame rate. The lack of smoothing effects gives it a nice sharpness.
I’m a graphics whore with racing games so I’m glad it’s good on max settings
What an awesome port! This is the way to do it.
Now we just need the multiplayer update, and this game becomes a must buy.
Now give us Overlord, Codemasters!
Shame it's the type of driving game I hate.
Come on sega get some more arcade ports on the switch!
It's an incredible game to have on Switch and has probably the best use of HD Rumble yet. It adds so much to the experience.
@Lord The street racing and touring cars can feel very arcadey. You might be surprised.
@Lord I miss arcade games in general. Where is Namco. I miss the old days of Sega and Namco. Namco had ace combat (before it went SIM) ridge racer, Manx tt, soul caliber, point blank, time crisis. I don't think I need to remind people about Sega. Arcade games have disappeared minus indie beat em ups. I hope one day they're back.
@GingerNinja
There is always one isn't there ?
I prefer pole position on Atari 2600
I was hoping they will do a comparison between GRID and Zenon racer.
@USWITCH64 I want a Final Lap 3 port with local wireless play. I guess split screen would work. In the old days you could find multiple Final Laps in an arcade hooked up together
@GingerNinja
Lol.
Maybe on Switch 2. Or maybe you don't have a Switch and don't realize it's not a ps4. It's a ps3.
@GingerNinja
Nah. A previous-gen game that looks and runs better than previous gen versions is better than a current-gen game running with low details, resolution and framerate - impressive as it is to have The Witcher 3, Doom, Wolfenstein, DQ11 et al running on Switch.
@sixrings Ace Combat a sim? Am I in a parallel universe or something?
@BionicDodo maybe you're right. It's not exactly a SIM. But originally it was a arcade game. A different type of arcade game then after burner but an arcade game the same. Now days it's so complicated and the reviews all gone on how it's so hard to master. The joy of arcade games is their relative ease to pick up and play.
The PS4 version has been hammered and lacks content. Most agreeing this is a better game. I’m all for having the game with more content 100%. With racing games you don’t need the latest. Dirt 3 is better than any dirt games that have come since. Rather have dirt 3 on switch than any of the others. New does not equate to better shame so many gamers don’t realise this
This is another great video by Digital Foundry. I wish Grid had one more graphics mode! 60fps locked, and it would lose the resolution and further remove graphic effects. As it is I love the game. Gran Tourismo 6 is still the best racing game ever, but Grid Autosport on Switch is very nice.
@Savino feral interactive have said they're looking into the possibility of the new Mario kart wheel and pedals being supported
Good port for on the GO. CodeMasters always the racing fan friend!
But This is another example of a Switch game that once home - I have no reason to play with the racing games I have there.
This thing does not even have online multiplayer. I do not race the computer in Forza or F1 when I am home
@Agramonte It's probably the best racing game to enjoy on the go, that's the thing.
Of course you have better racing games in other platforms, but you can't enjoy them in the bus going to work, for example. And this is an awesome game as well.
Really enjoying the game. Looks gorgeous in different ways in either mode. The AI feels very realistic too. It's cool to see battles going on up ahead on the track when you're jostling for position yourself.
Go go Feral power for proving there is another good porting studio and bring us a properly optimized game
@the_beaver Oh 100%. Can Play this on the Bus to Boston on Monday and this weekend (I finally get to be home) I am playing F1-2019 waiting for the F1 Mexico GP tomorrow.
It is a handheld game.
This is a very stunning game for the Switch, only problem is Codemaster didn't bother to make a physical release for it at all so some people end up ignoring it thinking it's just was an after thought port.
I've always enjoyed racing Sims and became a Forza convert since the first one on the Xbox. Having now ditched my Xbox for the Switch I'd been hankering for a racing sim and this has been excellent! The graphics are fantastic and theres some challenge to be had, can't do the drifting for the life of me though!
Good work from Codemasters, I'd recommend this as the essential racing game for the switch...other than Mario Kart!
It’s great game. Just make sure you turn off all the assists (traction control, stability control, automatic steering/braking) otherwise the handling is horrible out of the box. Once you do that, you can drift like a champ. @spoondriver
@Hazzerboraco yes I'll take burnout 3 takedown on the switch anyday!
@sixrings totally agree I miss those pick up and play arcade type games where you don't have hours to play but you need a quick fix.
Manx TT, sega rally, ridge racer, Daytona, out run 2000, virtua cop, lethal enforcers, paperboy, soul caliber, power stone,........
There's too much sand box, and indie on the switch and currently less than a handfull of arcade games!
Virtua racing as fuelled my need, and it's so perfect arcade perfect to be precise 60 frames online leaderboards, online play, and all for £4 come on Sega, Namco, Atari get churning them out!
I play in graphics mode because in portable I have the feeling I see better the circuit.
It's a great game. Lot of interresting cars like the m3 e30, silvia s15, nsx R, rx7 fd, s2k etc. and classics racing cars. And several F1 circuits !
Feeling is like forza with esp/tc off and manual transmission. On a portable console, it's an old dream for me.
@lord because you talked about a remaster of Burnout 3 takedown, now I will hope we get one. By the way, I bought this game (Grid autosport on Switch), very fun , more simulation than arcade but only by a thin margin
What about Crusin Blast
I hope they bring more of their games to Switch, such as Dirt Rally 2.0 or the annual F1 games. It's been a long while since one came to a Nintendo console and a handheld in fact.
Wow serious tho, the switch keeps surprising me, great job!
Wolfenstein, this, dragon quest, imo MK11, doom, thats how you bring games over!
This game looks fantastic! Just waiting for online multiplayer.
I'm still holding out hope for a physical release
