Sure, the new fancy Ponyta might be grabbing all of the headlines at the moment, but before you decide whether or not to include it in your team, there's another important decision you'll need to make in Pokémon Sword and Shield.
That decision, of course, is which starter Pokémon you'll be choosing. Now, you may have already made up your mind (*cough* Team Sobble! *cough*), but the folks at developer Game Freak have shared some new info on each of the new characters which might change your decision.
The new info comes via Game Informer and is split into the three videos attached below. Make sure to give them a watch and let us know if they've changed your mind at all.
What do you think? Do you have a favourite? Let us know in the comments below.

Gamefreak can detail the 3 starters as much as they want, my choice depends on the best/coolest end-evolution.
Probably Cyndaquil when I replay Pokemon Silver instead of this minimum effort entry.
Scorbunny is sooo adorable; I think that, no matter what GF says, I’d pick him over and over again (unless his evolution is really awful). Too bad I’m gonna pass on buying SWSH
Bundle been preordered for awhile now
Me: Its about time! I can't wait to see-

😑
I really do like all 3 starters, probably the most I've liked all 3 choices since the first gen honestly. All the same, I'm probably going Grookey.
Well Scorbunny is obviously going to be a fire/fighting type YAWWWWWN.
Grookey is going to be a tank with a semi average attack stat like all grass starters Gen IV onwards.
Looks like Sobble is the one for me.
@PBandSmelly Sorry a videogame meant for entertainment offended you so much.
@StinkyHat We don't know for sure yet.
I guess I’ll decide when I know about their evolutions and their final typing, but so far I’m leaning towards Sobble. My partner is set on Scorebunny, so we’ll trade as soon as we reach the new games’ equivalent of the nursery and can get an egg, and then probably hustle for a Grookie online so we have all three fairly early in the game.
@Primarina But how else will people know that I don’t like Pokemon??
Probably Sobble, but decision will ultimately be made by final evolutions and typings.
Breaaking news, user named after a Pokemon lashes out at people disappointed in Pokemon.
A bit... lacking these informations...
I understand how they want to sell them on the design, but I kinda hoped to get at least an hint about the gameplay side, like moveset, stats, just a "Grookey will be great for who likes strong Pokemon" or "Sobble can be suprisingly fast", but nope, nothing.
All I got to know is that the starter I wanted is in their opinion not fitting for me XD;;;
Since I preordered the double pack, so. . . #SobbleSquad #GrookeyGang
This is the first time I will be playing on release and on an actual Nintendo system (some countries have it rough / Sony dominated my days over here). So I'm very excited.
But it doesn't bother me to read the complaints, I actually think it's good knowledge, I don't get why some people would like to "censor" them.
On topic so far Scorbunny, I don't like the other two design. I usually like the fire ones anyway, not a fan of Tepig though.
Grookey for me, at the moment.
In the first trailer I was all over Scorbunny but I've liked him less and less ever since (specially if the fire/fighting curse comes true).
I've been leaning Grookey and this videos seem to settle that for me! But I'll really, really only decide after I see the final evolutions, since Oshawott burned me once and I won't that happen again, (apparently this will need to happen in a very careful for spoilers Google after I start the game since it doesn't seem like they'll release them before it comes out)
tl;dr: #GrookeyGang
Still no evolutions shown...that will help me determine my final pick.
First playthrough pick is always the fire starter for me.
@Primarina I get your point better now, but I believe it's good in general to have a feedback about public opinion, which is usually discontentment but there you go.
At the end of the day most of us will play it and want the best for it, so that unifies us somehow.
I previously chose Scorbunny when they were revealed. However, I have this feeling Grookey is gonna end up with the best third form. So I'm kinda stepping back and hoping we get those forms sometime soon.
I have no interest in Sobble. He just seems a little too sad looking to me. However, I've had my mind changed on a Pokemon based on how its portrayed in the anime. So I won't completely rule out like the little guy at some point
Sobble all the way!
@Primarina I don't dislike Oranguru to be honest, even though he wasn't in my team in Sun. But I think Grookey's gorilla final form, as the leak already spoiled to us, will probably be more active and I have faith I will like him
Still set on sobble. I can’t wait to see its evolution, but hopefully in game where I can be surprised!
How are there no reputable leaks about the evolved starters yet? That's all I need to know to make my decision.
@jagetron minimum effort how?
Considering the water one looks like Mudkip and the moneky doesn't look that unique, probably the bunny.
Need to see their evolutions, kind of surprised we haven't at least seen their stage 2 evolutions yet.
I think I will choose the green monkey. Maybe...
@NoxAeturnus The Affleck leak, from before the June 5 direct, has basicallt been confirmed by this point. Only Sobble has a specific leaked evo in the leak though
It all depends on the end evolution, really. Nobody picks a Charmander if they don’t want a Charizard.
Litten's final evolution was terrible so I just didn't evolve him lol.
@Kalmaro we go with the old phrase history repeats itself but I am hoping it turns into a fire/normal type but fighting is just so much mor elikely with a rabbit based pokemon or psychic.
Watch the opening song from Uo-Kai Watch one (game, not show) on YouTube and then try and tell me it’s not better than Pokémon. You can’t do it.
@SirAwesomeness41 There weren't pics in that leak. I don't want to know its name and theme, I want to know what it looks like and its type.
I honestly like all 3 and not knowing how they evolve, I'm pretty divided. I'd like to try them all. I'm probably gonna get both games because I lack self control too. I am thinking the water type first - since there hasn't really been a new water Pokemon revealed that I really like.
@edgedino I'd take anything really, but we haven't had a fore fighting in two generations now right?
I'll pick Grokey as soon as GF announce that all pokemon will be updated in
Right now I'm planning to choose Scorbunny, but I'm more interested about its evolutions
Grookey Gang will rise again!!!
Green Monkey
the Funky Monkey
@NoxAeturnus Oh. Ok
I don't know which yet lol. Sobble maybe?
I want to get this game but the last pokemon game i enjoyed was Pearl on the DS and the last pokemon game i purchased was Y on the 3DS.
I'll wait till it's released and decide.
Planet of the Grookies for me tho i really love that Scorbunny
Wasn't the green one already in Gen 3 or 4? Mandela effect, or they're really running out of ideas...
Sobble, since the very first moment.
This will be my first proper pokemon game, after falling for Let's Go Evee. So this decision will probably take up more of my time than it should. It's made a bit easier by my hatred of bunnies though. Evil rats with long ears I say! Probably roll with the monkey thing.
I have watched this with my GF yesterday and I thought she would explode from cuteness overload. She has not played any Pokemon game before but is excited for this one.
I like rabbits and I like fire, so the choice is obvious.
@Kalmaro yes but ultimately when you see sun and moons starter it was ultimately gunna be a fire fighting type and just seems like they tacked on dark to just avoid people complaining about it being fire fighting, the pokemon is literally based on wrestling.
@edgedino I'd still give it a pass, it only learns 3 fighting type moves naturally and only 2 of them do damage. It LOOKS like a fighting type but is a true fire/dark as far as I'm concerned.
I think we'll be okay, but it's still speculation at this point.
@Kalmaro ultimately if they chose to make it fire fighting it would of had more fighting type moves and even its signature move could have easily been a fighting type move while it could have also been given a ton more fighting then but ya they did a good job of at least making it more of a dark type by this.
@Baker1000
minimum effort by:
-Continuing to remove features/gameplay elements from previous entries for no good reason.
I do not get the impression that this is a console quality rpg. It may surprisingly be, but that's not what Nintendo has shown/sold it as so far. This looks like a handheld game quality game being sold for 60 bucks. I don't believe Im wrong to want a pokemon game that features a more immersive world with more content. The developers have so much to draw from, two decades of anime, manga, games, spinoffs, card games, movies, etc. But they don't take advantage of it in my opinion.
