There's quite a good selection of survival horror games on the Switch, but one series currently missing from the line-up is Fatal Frame.
Speaking to Nintendo Everything, series producer Keisuke Kikuchi said he'd be open to revisiting Koei Tecmo's terrifying IP.
Yeah, I do want to make a Fatal Frame on Switch. I think it'd be a ton of fun to play with the console in handheld mode and moving all around.
He also said how he was "very happy" to be regularly asked about the series, but is currently focused on Fairy Tale RPG, due out on Switch and multiple other platforms sometime next year.
Fatal Frame started out on the PlayStation 2 in 2001 and in more recent years has been released on Nintendo platforms. The last one popped up in 2014, as a Wii U exclusive.
Would you like to see this scary series make a return? Comment below.

Fatal Frame 2 was fantastic. Great story and really scary for all the right reasons.
The latest entry on Nintendo Wii U, Fatal Frame 5... urgh. What a dull experience. It was like comparing any Silent Hill game to Silent Hill 2.
Ohh yeah, my point being: I'm not too optimistic about a new entry on Switch. The survival horror genre needs great writing to succeed. Something we have seen way to less in recent years… or should I say a decade?
Would love to have Fatal Frame on the Switch. There is always plenty of room for another horror title in my catalogue.
@Aneira Resident Evil has been doing really well after 6. Revelations 1 and 2 are fantastic continuations of the style 4 brought and 7 went in a new direction which paid off with it being one of the scariest RE games to date. Granted, that is just one series and I can't really think of many other big survival horror games in the past few years...
Let Keisuke Kikuchi do his thing, please 🙏🏼
Not likely it'll come to the states after Nintendo botched the launch so horribly.
Seriously, you put a 10GB game as an eshop exclusive on a console with only 8GB of internal memory. Stupid Stupid Stupid.
Oh, and there was the story censorship too. That didn't help.
@Aneira seriously holding up SH2 as the pinnacle of SH games is a bit unfair. 3 and room were pretty stellar titles with their own unique take.
I actually really enjoyed the Fatal Frame entry on Wiiu. It was creepy and tense. Yes the writing was a bit hammy but most Japanese games have hammy writing.
Why not? The Switch would also like to have a good Fatal Frame game.
@Aneira wtf? Silent Hill and Silent Hill 2 are both masterpieces
Fatal Frame V was fun on Wii U with its asymmetric gameplay, also like my limited edition copy. Looking forward to the new installment but highly doubt it will beat Wii U experience.
Hopefully it won't get the NoA special treatment of censorship like they did with FF V, Xenoblade X and TMS (twice including the JP version lol)
NoA/Treehouse is like a freaking parasite.
If they can turn the Switch into a virtual camera, then this could be amazing.
@Yalaa to be fair- JP xenoblade X’s scantily clad 13 year old should not have been a thing to begin with
@Yalaa What does that have to do with this article?
Would love to see another entry of this franchise on the switch
@Peterjr1 In Maiden of black water they replaced lingerie with Zelda's dress.

Project Zero is one of the best survival horror video game series, so I really hope it spawns more games. The Wii U game was underrated and not played properly because you need to stand up to battle ghosts as if it was Virtual Reality or Augmented Reality. Let's hope there is more to come.
Not another dead priestesses game
I too would like a new Fatal Frame
@BarefootBowser Sounds like that would be a very small scale game limited only to your room
So much for a "UK" website...
I never really liked this series. The items which were needed for a good playthrough were handed out in spots at random bits, then disappeared 5 minutes later in the story. The window of opportunity to grab them was tiny, making you either;
A) Constantly back track to check places you already checked, or
B) Use a walkthrough
Neither appealed to me so I got bored of number 2 super quickly. Only ever played demo of the Wii U one and it seemed like it would be the same. Not only that, it gave you things for being good with the camera, what if you sucked at fps? Then bam instantly both problems combine and make the game incomplete forever because you don't have enough good items.
I had the original Fatal Frame (aka Project Zero in my neck of the wood) for PS2. I couldn't complete it though. Why? I was 23 at the time and even then I found it too damn scary to continue playing beyond the first handful of ghosts. I can watch scary/horror movies with with no issues whatsoever, but being fully immersed in a scary ass video game, no thank you. I can't even play Five Night's at Freddy's.
Yes!
A trilogy collection remastered for Switch would probably be the best way to get new players on board, but a new game would also be terrific. I'd love to see FF IV and V on the Switch as well.
Please. Real Japanese survival horror has been so rare since last gen. We need at least some of the classic series back besides RE.
Yes please. Remaster or remakes of previous game would also be appreciated.
Yes! I miss those games.
Either a new one or ports of the first five (assuming the glitches in 4 are fixed) would be marvelous.
@BarefootBowser A) The GamePad has a maximum range where it can function away from the base console, and treating it like a complete AR experience would expose that limitation quickly, B) Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir did that as mentioned previously, which I didn't think was too bad, but the 3DS's... lacking cameras made some parts pretty finnicky. To its credit, Fatal Frame 5 used the GamePad pretty darn well as the camera, even letting you take portrait shots to do a bit more damage if you tilted the Pad sideways.
And then there's poor Ghostwire, which ended up never finding a publisher. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jIlxo-X5t5w
Go for it, Koei Tecmo!! We are waiting.
The Wii U game was so crazy and such a small handful of people got to play it.
We just need a collection of the old ones...NOW
Really loved Project Zero 2 and 4 on the Wii, didn't had the chance to play the 5 tho
I would like to see a fatal frame game on Switch. I got the one that came to Wii in the UK and hacked my Wii to play the one that wasn't released in the UK.
@oji I also bought the Limited Edition on Wii U. Wonderful atmosphere in the game. One of my favourites on that console.
Just bring the entire series to the Switch then starting with a remaster of the first one and go on from there or ported the last one and remastered the first four later.
Fatal Frame 5 had some of the best atmosphere I've ever seen in a horror game, but suffered from being too long and featuring excessive backtracking. I feel like a Fatal Frame 6 has great potential though.
Hmm... the survival horror category is already full of disappointments, I hope this guy won't wanna add another one to it.
Personally, I think they should start by porting some of the existing Fatal Frame games to Nintendo Switch worldwide, preferably uncensored as an option (obviously that won't please everyone, but it's a start) and see how popular they are. I'm not really into games where you can only stuns enemies with limited ammo, but I think I'd give the series another try.
DO IT!! DO IT!! DO IT!! DO IT!!!! Miss the days of good ol' survival horror... RE 2 Remake is probably the only game that has scared me in recent years... If they make this game, to me, gimmicks (like the way the used the Wii U Gamepad as a camera) are welcome, but not necessary (not even sure how they would even implement that in another entry... or here's a thought.. release the whole series on the Switch in as much as the US never got to see Fatal Frame 4 or the Fatal Frame 2 Wiimake!!!
@GrailUK maybe they could implement an app for your smartphone? One of the issues with the 3DS spinoff was that it needed a LOT of light to play, thus removing the "scary" setting needed to enjoy the game... just a thought
I don't like horror, but wanted to see what those games were all about. Like, it was a bit different than the normal horror games that were all about jumpscares or whatever.
Every time I see something about this game, there's a controversy around censorship. Now, I'm no fan of censorship, but what if what got cut by the localization team was actually super-dumb? Because honestly, that what I think of the content that got removed from this game. I love the creepy atmosphere in this game, and it's really spooky as you explore the forests and abandoned buildings at night... Why would anyone do that nearly naked? It really works against the atmosphere of the game. I've got nothing against Senran Kagura, or the girls of SNK, but those are supposed to be silly fun. Having that in Fatal Frame just doesn't fit with the story.
Fatal Frame mobile coming soon from Nintendo.
hopefully they dont censor it like they did with the wii u version.
Whilst waiting for a new ff please port all the others to switch is what I’d love to say to this guy!
@MongolRaider have you played Outlast? That’s very scary and reminds me of my time
@RiasGremory what did they do to the wiiu version. That game is a 7/10
@Shy_Guy me too
@Nedtendo they censored the sexy outfits from the game.
@RiasGremory I understand the frustration with censorship but does minor desexualisation really make or break an experience?
@Nedtendo Interesting you'd take this stance. Clearly, you either aren't a fan of the Xenoblade Chronicles series or the removal of the option to alter the breast size of a 13 year old character in XCX just didnt bother you - in which case, you are not the demographic for these titles.
Censorship is wrong no matter what. You have to respect the artist's original vision, so if the creator of Fatal Frame wanted you to run around in the cold, dark woods snapping ghouls in an outfit that barely covers any of the strong, female protagonist's hot body then it should stay.
It's not about the beautiful curvy ladies. It's about the art.
@Nedtendo I've seen screenshots from the uncensored version. The "sexy outfits" absolutely don't fit with the context of the game. I would go so far as to call it immersion breaking. I get the argument of keeping a game true to the original creator's vision. But I also think this part of the original creator's vision was stupid.
@MajorasLapdog You're argument about XCX is really strange. If someone wants to play an epic adventure game about exploring an alien world full of strange creatures, but they're not into 13-year-old girls with huger knockers, they should stay away?
@Nedtendo i wasnt too upset about it but still censorship is annoying as hell.
Yes please. Love the last one on wiiu
@TheFox Those outfits were from a part of the game in which there's a flashback to when the characters did gravure modelling that they regret doing and they can be unlocked after beating the game several times. The western version just has those scenes feature them in their usual outfits. Besides that, the jiggle physics were toned down to be more subtle. All completely pointless because it's an M rated/Pegi 18 game and especially odd when considering that you need to beat the game several times to unlock them. I could understand changing the unlocks to the western ones for the sake of not being tone deaf, but that doesn't seem to be the case at all. It also pissed off the Japanese because they liked these new outfits too, but it's all locked to another region's version of the game.
As for the XCX stuff, removing the bust slider was completely pointless. A lot of people complain about Lyn's original swimsuit, but it also comes off as something that wouldn't have been a big deal had it been left alone. Everyone can wear the swimsuit, but because the nonsense ages were more important to keep intact, Lyn has another outfit layered over it when she wears it.
I still remember what social media were like during middle and high school, so someone in that age group wearing a bikini like that was pretty normal to see during the summer. If anything, it was far more believable and ethical than dragging a kid around a dangerous planet filled with hostile lifeforms and having her defend herself with melee weapons and GUNS while plenty of trained adults wander around NLA.
I wonder if the Wii U Fatal Frame was profitable. I wouldn’t mind a new Fatal Frame game on Switch.
Censoring is just irritating sometimes, especially when they flat-out remove features/content. It also shows up how messed up our country is....
Boobs are a big no-no, but graphic violence with blood and gore splattering everywhere, yeah that's totally fine.
@bert0503 I'm betting it wasn't (profitable). Especially with no physical release in North America, I believe very limited in Europe, and you couldn't even download it on a base model Wii U without adding an external hard drive. Just the fact that it was published by Nintendo rather than Koei Tecmo tells you that KT had no expectation of profit. I remember Nintendo leadership saying something implying they were willing to put out games they knew wouldn't make money so that Wii U owners had something to play. Otherwise, they'd feel so burned, they'd swear to never to buy another Nintendo again (and tell all their friends). That's some heavy paraphrasing on my part, but I'm guessing that was the strategy behind Fatal Frame.
YES!
FOR THE LORD OF LUCIFER!
LET THIS HAPPEN!
https://images.app.goo.gl/mUq7S3qLTZZtPhhN7 My thoughts on the censorship debacle-
First, give us all the Fatal Frame games. I want to play them all and relive my childhood terror.
@Ralizah THIS is a comment the developers NEED to see!!!
@TheFox Nintendo published it because they co-own the franchise now. Ever since Fatal Frame 4, it's been a joint effort, hence why Smash Ultimate has Yuri as an assist trophy and spirits of Mio & Mayu (representing Fatal Frame 2's remake); Smash 3DS has a trophy of Maya from Spirit Camera..
@Nedtendo Yes, I've played Outlast. It's a good game. That's where Capcom got their inspiration for Resident Evil 7.
@BarefootBowser Maybe you never played Zombii U then. One of my favourite games on the Wii U and one of my favourite horror games. It used the Gamepad for stuff like that - holding up the Gamepad and moving it around to scan rooms and such.
@Peterjr1
Resident Evil was were it all started for me, but I don't think 4 and later fits the survival horror genre. To me these are different genres. The last of the true survival horror RE games was Code Veronica.
After how completely terrible 5 was, I'm not hopeful. 2 and 3 were AMAZING, 4 was okay (The fake items with the hands grabbing you was ANNOYING) and then 5 was this weirdly horny mess that ruined Miku's legacy, had character's panties showing, and was just janky as fuzz. I couldn't play anymore because of a section where if a ghost touched you, it was instant death, but I kept getting stuck in the level geometry and she would just appear out of nowhere.
Maiden of blackwater was pretty cool. Not as good as 2 but still had a very unsettling atmosphere and was very creepy. Its a series that has had ups and downs but i think a switch game would be great. the 3rd entry i would say is the worst and even that was pretty cool at the time, not a good game to revisit but yeah good first run through.
@Aneira have you actually played silent hill 1, 3,4. They are on par if not better then 2
@jwala-thakur
Yes I have and no, they are clearly not. Maybe you just didn't get the story.
