Square Enix has announced the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate director Masahiro Sakurai will appear on the fourth Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age live stream, airing next week. It'll start at 9 PM JST on 26th September and run until 1 AM JST on 27th September, and is celebrating the launch of the game on Nintendo Switch.
The first part of the broadcast will feature Sakurai alongside the Dragon Quest series creator Yuji Horii, who will apparently have a "special" chat, and this will be followed by a second segment inviting the Japanese voice actors of Dragon Quest XI S and the series in general to countdown to the midnight launch. Links for this broadcast have not yet been shared.
Dragon Quest XI S for Switch launches on the same day here in the west. If you can't wait, you can download a demo of the game from the eShop right now and transfer your data across to the full game when it is released next week. Will you be making room for this epic RPG adventure? Tell us below.

Nice!
As for if I’ll be jumping in day 1...I took a few days off of work just for this game when it drops and blazed through the demo in a day. It was a GOTY contender on PS4, but I didn’t manage to beat it there, dropped it 40 hours in when the Switch version got detailed. Can’t wait!
How does this compare to VIII?
I just started 8 recently and am enjoying it but the cramped too-close camera is annoying me
Sakurai the PR master himself!
Surely this means the Luminary is going to appear in Smash Bros, right?!
@Patron XI feels like an evolution of VIII in a lot of ways, though I never had an issue with the camera in either.
I'm pumped for this game. I didn't buy much today for the Switch Lite/Links Awakening because I have the DQXI Roto Edition Switch pre-ordered. I am excited to get this game and console.
Has anyone seen any pictures of the box for that special edition console?
Game of all Games for me this year, was really hard to skip the PC and PS4 version in favor of the Switch release, but after playing the demo I know it was worth it.
I must say I am disappointed in the graphics in handheld mode. It looks almost like a 3DS game. I have not tried it in docked mode.
DQ Rep confirmed for Smash!!
Wait...
Yay, it seems like Sakurai is quite the DQ fan. He's mentioned it in several interviews, etc. Hoping this will really take off in the West finally!
I said this before, and I'll say it again, I did not expect to get into the demo as much as I did, and it's getting me so much more hyped for the full release. Can't wait for it
@mozzy1 it did work with fire emblem, with three houses being the best fe launch in us history, so maybe the same will happen here, and I kinda hope this means we'll get Japanese dragon quest stuff here in US, liiiiike https://www.amazon.com/Taito-Dragon-Quest-Friends-Headphones/dp/B01HPP43AK/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_21_t_1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=PMJP4HXN2CX317YXH2E0
@Sveakungen It was soooo hard to wait years for this release on switch but I think it was worth it!!! Cant wait!!
@Patron VIII is slightly better IMO. The OST is way better in 8th game. XI isn't instrumental... simple melodies from SNES era I believe... maybe even NES. Nothing wrong with it, but if you have played 8th and go to this it won't capture you in the same way the OST. Well it's what it is. The good side of DQXI is that there is no random battles... monsters are roaming on road and you can fight them when you feel to. Sure 3DS got that part fixed but if you have only ps2 copy you will understand what I mean. If DQ8 ps2 didn't have random battles I would vote for DQ8 without doubt. For the OST and story alone. It was a bit darker as well. This is quite light
My most anticipated Switch title this year.
@Yosher he's already in smash....
@Alucard83 the switch version has instrumental.
@CupidStunt really? Have you played a 3ds game recently, there is no comparison. Maybe ps3.
@Alucard83 Thanks, I am actually playing DQ8 on the 3ds so random encounters haven't been a problem. I just ordered VII for the DS and hopefully it's random fights don't ruin it for me when I get around to it. I'm thinking of working on 8 and then looking at other titles in my backlog before I then get XI
@theseventensplit DQ looks so blocky in handheld, even more so than Xenoblade 2 did. I was very surprised considering how amazing Zelda BotW looked in handheld.
@Patron
It's incredibly similar to 8. Just better graphics.
@Alucard83 One of the features in the Switch's definitive version of DQXI is the inclusion of orchestrated music.
@Patron I'll parrot the others here: XI is definitely an evolution over VIII, and this definitive version will only further that sentiment. I should clarify that I love VIII, too. I must've played through VIII at least 10 times over the years. Both are excellent games, but XI is a modern and improved take on the formula that made VIII so memorable.
@theseventensplit He is?! Oh my god you don't say, I had no idea!!
..it was a joke by the way.
Can't wait! Been playing the demo and looking in every corner for all of the items. The level of polish on this game surpasses pretty much everything out there. I love the voice acting, and the music as well!
I found it very helpful. Thank You so much for sharing this information.
Played through the demo in 9 hours and itching to carry on my saved game. Just need to finish my Golden deer play through of FE 3 houses by Friday.
Have always been an ardent FF fan and this will be my first dragon quest. Super pumped and will pick up the first three as well.
@Sveakungen Same here! I waited for the Switch release also, was a long wait but so worth it!
@CupidStunt Interesting, I am actually the opposite, I think the graphics in handheld look great!
@Gasarakii I just expected a but more I suppose. The PS4 game was exceptionally beautiful and I didn't expect so much blurriness in handheld mode. I will probably still buy it though.
@theseventensplit Cell shading normally translates very well to Switch e.g. BotW. I was a bit surprised by the blurriness. I will still be buying it I am sure.
It is one of the most gorgeous games on PS4
@CupidStunt Understandable, I skipped those wanting it on the Switch (even though it was not announced at that time, I knew it would). But after playing that then going to the Switch I bet you see a big difference.
@Gasarakii Xenoblade 2 had a similar blurriness in handheld mode but didn't stop me enjoying it, but other graphically intensive games like Astral Chain, Smash Bros, Skyrim, etc looked absolutely amazing in handheld. I am probably just being picky. I never played on PS4, just seen my friend playing it and wow it is gorgeous. I prefer JRPGs on portable consoles though.
much like adventure games, dungeon crawlers and the like - JRPGs are often preferred to be played in handheld mode
if the Switch offers that for games out already (DQ, Overwatch, Diablo, etc) then the graphic compromise is more than worth it, no matter what
@Gasarakii
I eat my words. It looks lovely on Switch and the music is amazing. I could not be enjoying it any more.
