Nintendo's latest piece of gaming hardware, the Nintendo Switch Lite, releases on 20th September. We're looking forward to getting our hands on one when that day eventually comes, but it appears that one lucky fan already has one sitting at home.
Twitter user David Reed has shared the following messages online, noting that he managed to pick up a Switch Lite early from a Walmart store in Rockmart, Georgia. The video below appears to show the console loading up for the very first time, with the familiar Switch 'click' and a language option being shown on screen.
It's always wise to be sceptical of people who claim to have products like this early, but the video above sure looks to be the real deal. It helps that Reed has shared a copy of his receipt online, too.
Of course, this wouldn't be the first time that a retailer has broken the street date for a product. While most major retailers will have systems in place to prevent this sort of thing from happening, errors do occur from time to time and we've heard plenty of stories where certain stores have purposefully allowed early sales of top games.
We can't all be this lucky, but if you are wanting to pick up your own Switch Lite, we have a lovely guide full of the best places to buy right here.
Thanks to nmanifold for the tip!

Traveler from future ?
A purchase before the time ?
He will be the first person to get drift on the analog stick.
By posting the receipt online he's going to get the person who sold him it into trouble.
@OorWullie
Good.
And in just over a week, everyone will have one and none of this will matter.
So what would be the game you would buy first if you already have a Wii U but not a Switch? Super Mario Odyssey?
@BlueOcean That would depend on your preferences?
First, though, I'd sell my Wii U and put it towards a Switch (though I doubt anybody would've bought it lol).
If I wasn't a launch user, I'd probably have gone with a grey switch with red/blue joycon and Fire Emblem Three Houses.
Walmart is a major chain, they should have more respect for street date than this.
But this has probably more to do with the fact that Walmart employees get paid basically nothing so what do they really care? Can't expect quality work from loyal employees that you treat like dirt.
@BlueOcean Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Fire Emblem 3 Houses, Splatoon 2, Mario Odyessy, Astral Chain, Octopath Traveller, SSB Ultimate, Tetris 99, Mario Maker 2, just to name a few excellent exclusive choices.
Isn't the Switch Lite going against what the console was originally made for and why it's called 'SWITCH'?. Honestly, it's nice for people that are always on the go, but it does take the name away from what nintendo originally wanted to do with it, and I'm sure with this out, it'll become hard to find the original that can be played on the TV.
Back to the topic, this seems to happen a lot with store chains anymore. There's been many articles of games getting leaked out early, games arriving before street dates and now...a console before street dates! It happens!
@JLPick A rose by any other name would still... well... you know.
If I were to get one, it would be to have easier, cheaper access to multiple Switches for multiplayer purposes.
GAME in Northampton (UK) always break the street date, on consoles and software. I was offered the Lite yesterday. It's a bit dodgy, the manager will sell you stock, for cash only, and give you a trade receipt. They have been doing it for years, and do you know what, no one has died, because street dates don't matter.
@JLPick yes I am surprised they have the gall to call it a "Switch"
Especially since I am 99% certain they chose to block TV mode via software to not canabalize normal switch sales. The hardware would support TV out. Jerks.
@Blizzia I'd never sell my Wii U, it has more (and the same?) games that I like than Switch and it's backwards compatible.
@Heavyarms55 Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Fire Emblem Three Houses are in my wanted list too.
I totally get why they made the 2DS, I've never used the 3D mode on my 3DSXL but I've had to pay for a device with that feature. This isn't like that. It's more like when the PS3 was released at a high price and didn't sell that well until they took out PS2 compatability (plus other things I'm assuming?) to be able to sell at a lower price. Manufacturers don't make money on consoles, wouldn't be suprised if they lost money, but make it back on games and licensing. But when it's only £50 cheaper, that makes no sense.
@JLPick Yeah it doesn't switch anymore but a lot of Switch games look bad on a 4K TV anyway so while the idea of switching is very nice, the low resolution doesn't look that great on a big 4K screen. It's a give and take situation.
@BlueOcean Every man (or woman) for him/herself.
I'd dump it like the hot garbage I think it is. But that's me.
@Blizzia Have you ever enjoyed a Wii U or just heard about it since Switch launched?
@konbinilife I can't wait for people to tear it down and seeing if someone can get that function up and running, just curious to see how Nintendo is blocking the TV out feature, via hardware or firmware?
Tax is low! I’d take 7 to 20 any day
Oh cool, will stop by Walmart on the way to work today see if they have some!
@BlueOcean I skipped it because it was a clear-cut dumpsterfire.
Played it at my friend's place every now and then, and the system wasn't good (in my opinion).
Always been an avid Nintendo fan, but I wasn't about to walk into that mess and willingly toss my money at Nintendo for a product that I believe to be hot garbage.
I played most of the exclusives on it with my friend, and again, it (the console, not the games) wasn't anything special. The gamepad being forced on you in a lot of games was also a major tragedy.
Not lucky. It's just a degraded Switch.
@BlueOcean definitely Nickelodeon Kart, it's the king of racers
@BlueOcean welcome to the team man! ppl told you tie biggest ones.. you can't go wrong.. it seems you laiek RPG, xenoblade 2 is sooo good!! i just picked astral chain (it arrives tmr i think) after ill pick fire emblem.. but just to remember, there are plenty of EXCELLENT indies games.. hollow knight, celeste, war groove, overcooked, tons of others.. again, welcome..
@rex_rex Thank you! I am not the biggest RPG fan to be honest but because I have an Xbox One X and a Wii U I'd get games that I'd like and can't get on those consoles (of course, Wii U is a legacy console now). For instance, I loved Xenoblade Chronicles X on Wii U so I'd probably like Xenoblade Chronicles 2. I loved Fire Emblem Awakening (I still haven't played Echoes) on 3DS so I'd probably like Fire Emblem Three Houses. I have played Super Mario Odyssey and a few others on my friend's Switch so I already know the original Switch (and I hate the joy-cons) and although Odyssey is not my favourite Mario game I'll get it anyway.
@BlueOcean cool man!! i dont hate the joy-cons.. but what i hate MOST is the problems of disconnection or drift.. true that i have a pro controller and it's great.. but i dont mind some times play with the joy-cons.. hehe. I LOVED odyssey, it's fantastic IMO.. too easy before finish the campaign, but it's other game after you beat it... I never played a fire emblem, let's see.. im excited.. xeno 2 was my first, now im happy that the 1 is coming in a definitive edition.. but if you are competitive (like me) why dont you get smash??? it's SO amazing!!
@rex_rex I hope that the Lite doesn't have the drift issues!! LOL I have Smash on 3DS and Wii U but I'm not a big fan although Banjo-Kazooie DLC on Switch is tempting. Super Mario Odyssey perhaps I like it more if I get it for myselft and play more.
@BlueOcean Actually a decent 4K upscaling TV keeps the picture looking quite nice (so yes depends on the TV) but yes your point about looking fine for portable is valid.
Something is telling me that Mr howell is looking for a new job
It’s a shame the Switch’s latest teased gadgets won’t work with a Lite out of the box. The new Ring, and the AR glasses, which have both been reported in the last week. It’s also a shame it doesn’t switch. Nor is the screen protected. As a second unit it’s ok, but anyone buying just a Lite may be disappointed
@Bondi_Surfer I think it depends on your situation. I bought a Switch from myself and one each for both of my sons at launch. We love them. My daughter, who is turning 6 in November, is now asking for a Switch of her own. Do I really need a 4th dockable Switch in my house or to spend the extra $100? Clear no for me. So for someone in my situation, I don’t think there will be any disappointment in buying a Lite nor do I think my daughter will be disappointed at all with having it as her main console.
If I was buying a Switch today, I’d probably get myself a Lite. I play 99% In handheld and generally single player games or online multiplayer. So joy-con sharing and TV play aren’t really something I ever do. The Lites are great options for people with different needs/wants.
I also think it was smart to keep the Switch name. This helps avoid confusion about game compatibility, NSO services, etc. It’s exactly what it says it is, a Switch Lite. And technically you can still switch from a handheld to tabletop mode.
@BlueOcean What kind of junky 4K TV do you have that Switch games don't look good on it? I've got a 60' 4K TV and Switch games look great on it! I don't really understand the idea that Switch games don't look good on a big screen at all.
@Heavyarms55 LG OLED C9, no junk at all. Xbox One X games look like a dream on it, literally.
Hey guys, I just wanted to comment and say that this is REAL! I read this article and went to my local Walmart this morning just to check, AND THEY ARE ALREADY OUT!!! I bought they grey version and it’s great!!!! So if u have one preordered, check your Walmart and see if they put it out!!!
I hope the manager/cashier don't get fired for this
@kepsux Well, the store employee is about to learn "if you sell a console before you're supposed to, they're probably going to brag about it to the Internet."
Presumably they were trained about that, so we can't say they shouldn't have known.
@JLPick i think we all agree that it could have its own completely original name - however it's much easier for all to understand by calling it the Switch Lite
it doesn't "Switch" no, but everything else is the same...
i mean what else would u have called it?
@BlueOcean Stardew Valley
Popped by one of the Walmart in my area. They have them in the back but refused to sell them, for obvious reasons. I have 3 pre-ordered already so no biggie was just curious if they had them. May swing by another local one on the way home just to see.
Hopefully they sell out so I do not do an impulse buy on my way to work.
This should have been an option back in 2017.
Walmart probably wasn't supposed to put them on the shelves early or something was mixed up.
@Franklin,
Not sure if your reply was serious, this would be an easy mistake to make as on face of it it does look similar to a special edition Switch, not sure someone should get in trouble for selling one of these a little early by mistake.
@JLPick,
This new console is not designed to replace the original Switch, they are if anything replacing the 3DS with this new machine.
@BlueOcean,
To be honest I can't see how lower resolutions will look that poor on larger sized T.V's, I have connected my Switch to my projector and 110 inch screen and it's looks pretty decent, in fact I was surprised at how good it looked.
@johnvboy It depends on the game, something like Super Mario Odyssey with simple cartoon visuals looks good on a huge screen.
@BlueOcean,
I was playing breath of the wild and it still looked pretty good, but to be honest I just tend to play the Switch on my 49 inch T.V in my living room.
Walmarts in Canada have a system where you can't sell release date items before the release date as the upc does not allow it to be processed to prevent things like this. Hmmmm.
@SetupDisk i've bought items that didn't have the code in the computer, the register person did an override and sold the item anyway. I'm sure this can be done with the Switch, if the sales person was ill-informed. I agree with the person that said the seller prolly thought it was the original switch. Some people (by their nature) avoid making those distinctions.
@BlueOcean There is no reason Switch games should look bad on it then.
@Heavyarms55 Yes there is.
@BlueOcean There really isn't, but what is the reason you're thinking of?
Cool!
I won't be getting it on release day though. It hurts too much on my wallet at the moment. But eventually...
What is with all the salty Switch Lite haters around here?
@JLPick the weird thing is how much sleeker the lite looks. I kinda want it just because of that
@JayJ I also can’t figure that one out. Handheld consoles are Nintendo’s domain
@NinChocolate @JayJ There is a sect worshipping the original Switch that hate Wii U, Switch Lite and even mini consoles. It sounds surreal but it's true.
interesting start up screen lol... joy con popping down......
Looks smaller than on the promotional and early hands on videos. Looks tempting!
@BlueOcean Playing as Banjo in Super Smash Bros. is a dream come true and worth buying a $199 console. Plus you'll be able to play all future releases not available on Wii U.
@Kevember Yeah that makes sense. I am considering getting Super Mario Odyssey as my first game but I have read that handheld play makes some moves extremely difficult but I have played it with joy-cons at my friend's and I am not a fan of the joy-cons and motion controls in this game. I'm wondering how bad is to do those moves in handheld mode. I really hated motion controls in Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2.
@BarefootBowser half a hour compared to the original or the revision?
@Xansies It does, plus I like the colors, and I feel that this is good for kids (like mine who would want it to play on the go) and for others that want a handheld, but still though, I honestly hope nintendo doesn't discontinue the original models and just go for these like they kind of did for the 3DS...hard to find the original 3DS and not see the 2DS only.
@isellpixels Nintendo ITCH!!!!! Sorry, just had to get that out! Understand the whole replacing the 3DS, which is a shame, and I honestly get the whole 'use it as a portable'...just takes it away of what it is!
