UK chart data is now in for the week ending 15th June, revealing that PlayStation's Days of Play sales have completely dominated the UK retail space over the last seven days.
Last week, when the sale was first introduced, PS4 titles started to rise up the charts and dampen Nintendo's chances at reaching the high positions. This week, things have been amplified even further, with nine of the top ten games being available on PS4 and several of those being exclusive to the system.
The highest charting Nintendo-published game this week was Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which rolled in at number 11.
Here's a look at this week's top twenty all formats chart:

UK loves their soccer
Anthem and Battlefield V are in the top 10.... what is wrong with you UK people?!
@NorseGamerTommy Football *
Nintendo doesn't have any big game released recently so this is no surprise.
I have to admit I went a little bit crazy on PS4 games last week, but none of them show on this list.
If it takes a deep, deep, discount on your games to take Nintendo out of the top ten then that makes me personally pretty confident in Switch software sales.
I don't think the Playstation country has much to do with this.
But the good discounts that Playstation did.
We can only dream with those discounts on Nintendo.
@Rhaoulos For everything they have announced still indeed no big releases and for astrail chain more like..tummy pain. Ah well. Im still happy with some games i bought months ago.
This so the first time in a while where Mario Kart 8 DX isnt among the Top 10 best-selling games of the week. It was close though..
Good on Sony— they can sell great games at low prices! Nintendo has to wait 5 or 6 yrs before they make them a Nintendo Select
maybe Nintendo should have more sales then instead of keeping their games at full price for decades at a time
The only way Sony can take out Nintendo is a game wide discount. But Mariokart still just outside the top ten, once the discounts go it will be back.
The fact that several VR games made the top 20 is a great thing IMO! PSVR Worlds, Blood & Truth, Astro Bot, DOOM VFR, and Skyrim VR. 5 out of the 20 games are VR exclusive. That's mental.
@Octane I tried Skyrim VR a few months ago...I could not handle it. Motion sickness
@FullbringIchigo When your games are only out of the top 10 a few days a year because your competitors are slashing 90% of their titles, I think you're safe to keep your games at full price xD
Good to see God of War back in the top 20. Incredible game.
There were some good deals in that sale. This is why I always wait until a couple of months to buy games on the platform. Shame that some of the better games are not being represented in the top ten.
The same boring Rockstar games, Anthem, Battlefield 5, Days Gone, and FIFA. No Sekiro, Resident Evil 2, or DMC5 which were also on sale.
@TeslaChippie i know it was a joke on how Nintendo never lower the prices of their games
@Aslanmagic git gud.
@Whalehome
I’m not sure having to chop prices dramatically to dominate the charts is a good thing
@SBandy
I should try it again. Played a couple of hours and, yeah, gorgeous graphics (I have a Pro). Clearly a high quality product but I just couldn’t get into it at all. Didn’t like the characters.
this is just the UK which is a very small portion for Nintendo the PS4 and Xbox 1 dominate sales in the UK and the Switch is a distant number 3
@electrolite77
I think it is definitely worth sticking with. The characters are unlikable at the start but they grow as the story goes on and it really becomes something magnificent. The combat also gets really great too.
But we can't control what games we like and don't like so if it isn't for you it isn't for you! Nowt wrong with that.
@KBuckley27
Actually Switch is probably number 2 now. It has regularly had more games in the Top 40 than Xbox for the past year.
Edit: I base this on the individual formats chart by the way. This week had more Xbox games but certainly Nintendo is no longer the distant third it used to be.
I wouldn’t get too worked up with this list. Wait for Nintendo’s big hitters to about to drop in the next few months. Let’s see, just off the top of my head
Mario Maker 2
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3
Fire Emblem Three Houses
Astral Chain
Zelda Links Awakening
And those are just the exclusives. I didn’t mention Crash team racing , Wolfenstein Young Blood, Bloodstained Ritual of the Moon, Spyro, Doom Eternal which are multi platform
But Nintendo is still in the top 10, FIFA 19 is the Switch version as well.
Well, it is a good sale! I finally bit the bullet and got a PS4 to complement my Switch. £70 off a 500GB PS4 with Fifa at Tesco. I sold Fifa at CeX for another £16 back, and used £20 worth of clubcard vouchers - bargain! Getting a lot of fun out of Spider-man.
A videogane company gives great prices on good games to their customers. The horror?!
Good to see. Lots of these games already made tons of money. Give the fans a break. SONY/3rd party know how to keep their base happy.
@Whalehome Yeah but when they sell at low price it means someone else has to pay the price. And it's often the working condition of the developers who pay the price. Pay your games at a fair price if you want to keep the good developers in the industry.
@bitleman oh I definitely have paid full price for most of these games. I thought they were worth it at $60 msrp. I can’t say the same for many Nintendo games. I’ll pay full price for Zelda, Metroid and some Mario, but the rest are games I’ll pick up after they’re a select.
People are still buying Anthem...?
To be honest? I'm not from the UK but it sounds to me it's very much Sony country as others have stated. Plus european football games so....
Also? Not too surprised. The big hitter Nintendo have coming... are still a fair bit away. Even Super Mario Maker 2 isn't until 2 weeks from now.
So if anything it mostly show we're in a period where Nintendo has less that's "freshly new" to whereas Sony has a surge of different things(such as that sales event no less).
Once more releases roll in, I expect to look at a different picture. If anything I feel like I'll have a hard time choosing from everything that releases in the next six months so much there'll be to choose from in term of solid games for the Switch.
I know September is gonna be quite the headache as a RPG lover for one with both DQ11S and Ni No Kuni 1 coming up at the same time than Daemon X Machina and Link's Awakening which I'm also interested into for other reasons.
I might have to limit myself with getting only DQ11S and Link's Awakening at first.
@bitleman
It doesn't work necessarily like this. Once game sales are enough to cover the development cost, eveything sold is done at full profit and should not have any impact whatsoever on working conditions of anyone. If it does, then the consumer has nothing to do with it. Sure, you could even add to this some planned profit the company is banking on, but when you're past this, it is again full profits.
Truth is, once you get past the initial launch sales window, price will often be in direct relation with how many copies you end up selling. If you keep it high, people who might not have been interested in the past probably won't change their mind and you rely solely on new people buying into your platform to drive those full price sales.
The reason some platforms do better sales, is probably because it makes older titles more profitable? If a game regularly priced at $50 sells 50,000 copies at $30 during a sale, but sell 200,000 at $10, it's then more profitable to sell it at $10. Also, doing a regular price drop (going from $79.99 to $59.99) boosts sales as well for a moment.
I also believe, from seeing how prices are set on the eShop, that Nintendo forbids third-parties from dropping their "regular" price outside of special sales. At least, for some time. Which might explain why age-old games like Skyrim and Doom are still $80 a piece, which makes absolutely no commercial sense at all, given these games are like $25 everywhere else.
Thing is, games are fighting against relevancy. Games like Mario Kart and Zelda have something for them : they're exclusives, and their popularity isn't going down. Keeping their price high makes slighlty more sense for those. But games like Skyrim and Doom are way past their prime and companies usually make their prices reflect this. Except on Switch, where their price is kept high. Which makes me think Nintendo may impose some conditions on third parties regarding pricing on the e-Shop.
@Realnoize
NBA 2K19 is literally $3 on the eShop in the US, which is the same deal as it is on PSN/XBL.
Nintendo definitely isn't imposing any restrictions on the price activity of 3rd party games.
Well Sony definitely knows how to run a sale, that's why. Soo many of the games on sale for the Switch were extremely terrible games and shovelware, while the sales for many of the more desirable games were small or inadequate...or even non existent . The fact that games like Arms and Mario Tennis are still selling for $40 during their "big sale" is ridiculous. Smash ultimate didn't even get any discount! Compare that to the kind of sales Sony had. What did anyone expect??
@westman98
I was talking about policies regarding regular prices. Obviously Nintendo allows sales. I'm talking about games dropping in prices (going from a $79.99 regular price to a new $59.99 regular price). I get that Nintendo doesn't really drop prices on their games (aside from when reissuing "Nintendo Select" games years later), but I was curious about why I haven't seen much third party drop their regular prices on the Switch. Games launch at a specific price point, they go on sale, yes, but always get back to that initial price point.
Maybe that's just me though. Anyone seen a game on the eShop marking their regular price down after a while (not a sale, but a permanent price drop)?
@Realnoize You do know videogames companies don't just make videogames to cover the cost but also to make profits right? And they can use these profits to develop the next games. Profits aren't an evil thing. The key of longevity is to keep a high symbolic price for your videogames so people know a good game is made by hard work. Nintendo has the lowest paid bosses of the industry and the longest average careers for their developers. We can't say the same about Sony's big studios who use the culture of crunch and huge turnover rate for their developers. That policy has a cost. It's up to the consumers to choose which industry they want.
@Ikana64 You have one amazing PS4 back back catalog (at an amazing price) to go over now! Even with no SALE.
Just having access to NIER Automata and Persona 5 is worth that price in my book.
@bitleman I've never heard of crunch at Sony though. They usually have a very relaxed ''we'll release it when it's done'' approach to their games. Just look at Dreams, they've allowed Media Molecule to spend years on it; and I don't think it will be hugely profitable in the end.
Not really a big deal either way. But when you think it took big sales to achieve it, not really surprised. But good on Sony.
TL;DR: Limited-time, deeply discounted goods outsell sales volume of full priced goods week of 6/11.
@bitleman
Yes, I do know. I mentionned that earlier. I also mentionned about being relatively ok with Nintendo games practically never going down in price (although I would buy more games if they weren't $80 a piece). What I was curious about was games from third parties that go down in price on other platforms, but not on Nintendo's platform and was curious about it. Like is there a clause in Nintendo's distribution contracts (or whatever it is called) that prevents companies from dropping the regular price of their games before a specific amount of time? I'm not talking about sales. I'm talking about dropping the regular price for an older game.
I don't think I've seen that happenning on the Switch platform yet.
Well that's what happens when you have these sales. The only game I got was NBA 2K19 because it was only $3 lol.
@Ikana64
Good time to get into the PS4. It’s a great system. There’s a vast library of good games to go at.
Just don’t buy games new at full price unless you’re certain you want to keep them. They don’t hold their value and you won’t be able to trade them in. Keep your eye on HotUKDeals and you’ll see the discounts a couple of weeks after release.
@Realnoize
I’m not sure if that’s it. I actually think companies are generally very happy to keep their games at full price. However on other formats there’s a race to the bottom as anything that doesn’t sell sees its price collapse within a few weeks. Everyone has to compete with that especially as the platform holders do it as well-God of War dropped quickly as did Forza Horizon 4 for example. I was able to get Spiderman for half price by waiting 6 weeks. MS are even throwing their new releases in with Game Pass.
However Nintendo hold their prices high which helps with resale value and doesn’t help apply that pressure. Add to that there simply isn’t as much competition for boxed retail releases and they can ask more for the likes of Skyrim and Doom.
Given the chequered history of third party sales on Nintendo systems I think this is for the best. If third parties had to take the cost of porting and the physical media and then worry they might have to chop the price straight away I reckon less would be willing to gamble on Switch.
@SBandy
Yeah you're right. I just might have to give it another crack at some point. If I ever find the time.
@Ikana64
Another thing-if you’re going to buy digital use CDKeys or Ebay to get cheap Topup cards. Or set up a US Account. Everyone’s praising the U.K. PSN Sale but Spiderman and GOW were 30% cheaper on the US Store
Wasn't the 3DS supposed to be the system topping the charts, with its only challenge being Switch? What gives, this doesn't make sense, none of this makes any sense!!
Maybe Nintendo should do sonethingvnice like this for its fans instead if allowing us to be charged £37.99 for a collection of 3 retro games: one GB and 2 SNES games. I love Nintendo's games the most but Sony is much kinder to its fans with regular sales, better priced and graphically UPDATED collections for cheaper than that Mana Collection.
@electrolite77
You may be right about this. Although I still firmly believe that it doesn't help third-parties to artificially keep their prices high. For instance, I'd very much like to buy Doom and Skyrim on my Switch, but when I look at their price, even when on sale, I feel like I'd be getting the worst deal ever, given these are around $25-$30 elsewhere. That feeling contributes to me not buying them. It also contributes to me feeling like Bethesda is greedy (even if not true), by charging more on Switch for no reason other than being on Switch.
Nintendo being Nintendo, I know they practically never drop their prices. And they can afford it since their games are exclusive and it's not like you can find them anywhere else. But for multiplatform titles, I find it much harder to justify. The "Switch Tax" is definitely a thing, and it sometimes gives the feeling we're punished for buying our games on Switch.
You know, I wouldn't mind paying a bit more, I understand there may be costs related to carts and other things. But like, 400% the price is too much for me.
@Sakko good discounts? Sony never gives good discounts. Nintendo has huge discounts. That's why they didn't too the charts.
@CupidStunt Have you seen the terrible launch of Chrono Trigger on Steam? The fact is, most people don't seem to want graphically "UPDATED" versions of retro 2D pixel-art games. Full remakes? Fine. Early 3D? Needs some remastering. But the old look is part of the charm for a lot of people - especially by the SNES, which I'd argue holds up pretty well graphically.
@Octane Blood & Truth is amazing
@Dirty0814 what are you on? Sony always has great discounts. Like triple A titles for less than $10 great
@HumanDog I haven't bought it yet. But I do have the demo that came with the PSVR.
It is impressive how well Mario Kart and Breath of the Wild are still selling.
The Forza Horizon 4 increase was well justified, that Lego DLC is absolutely fantastic.
I guess in reality though, the real winner of E3 was Sony who didn't even show up.
Well Sony’s discounts did wipe the floor with Nintendo’s offering. I mean 2 of their biggest games of the year (Spider-Man & GoW) were on se for $20 while Nintendo was still charging $40+ for 2 year old games. I really wish they would be more aggressive with their sales. Especially as someone who is going all digital.
This is why Nintendo needs to stop being stubborn with pricing and allow retailers to put their games on sale.
@CoastersPaul well, updated 2d graphics could be great as shown by Octopath Traveler. But yeah late Super Nintendo 2d games are quite nice to look at.
@CoastersPaul Square are renowned for bad graphic updates. But then companies like Sony do it amazingly well. I love these old retro graphics too; however, A bare bones re-release of one GB game and 2 SNES games is not worth £37.99. I will continue to not allow myself to be ripped off on Switch by companies such as Nintendo, Capcom and Square, as no other gaming platform has such ridiculous pricing and lack of sales, as only the raging Nintendo fanboy allows it, and it makes me hate being a Nintendo fan. Look at the amazing Days if Play Ssle on Sony just now.
Deponia on Switch released for £39.99, only the first part, the same price the full collection released for on the first day on Sony. The Resident Evil games were almost double the price they released for on other consoles, and now this Mana Collection price, and everyone still sticks up for it. I hope Nintendo are fined again like they were for n 2002 for their price fixing as it feels like this all over again.
@Octane Do u play PSVR and if so how is the experience? , The upcoming PS5 VR is gonna b something special, they've been working hard on that for sometime now...sounds exciting...
@NintendoFan4Lyf lol yeah that Forza Lego really cracked me up, actually the whole Lego scene in general is something else, milking it, milking it big time.
@NotTelevision "boring Rockstar games"...lol ok sure...
@Sim1 It's pretty neat. I got it during a sale, with a bunch of games for €10 each. Astro Bot was one of my favourite games last year. There's definitely a lot of potential. If I can play Cyberpunk 2077 on the PSVR 2 on PS5, I'm all set for the rest of my life lol.
@electrolite77 God of war 4 reflects lifetime sales of 10 million copies, I don't think that's the greatest example when you mention "drops" and "price collapses", I'm pretty sure everyone involved received their share.
@NintendoFan4Lyf horizon is actually fun even without the Lego dlc it's racing without being serious . If you want sim racing then you get the Motorsport versions. I'm finding myself using my switch more than my Xbox one and PC now
@Sim1 I don't think it is milking it , after horizon 3 hot wheels dlc (which is really good) they needed something to top that. I think that's why Lego got put into the game.
@Sim1 No I’m sincere. To each his/her own, but Red Dead 2 was the only game that put me to sleep multiple times during the campaign missions.
I’m glad I played it to see what it was about, but if I had the physical edition I would gladly sell it. They got me with another digital sale a while back 😂
@Sim1
GOW is the perfect example of what I was talking about. It was released on April 20 to huge fanfare and ecstatic reviews. By June 8th it was available for £34.99 in the U.K. (30% off) at Sainsbury’s and Amazon. It was £24.99 by September.
That tells Consumers it doesn’t matter how big a budget the game, don’t pay full price.
If you’re a publisher putting out a game that can’t compete with Sony on budget, brand recognition, marketing reach etc (so almost anyone) you are really going to have to drop your price to compete.
@Realnoize
Yeah more I think of it you may be right. I just wonder if we’d have heard something if that was the case. But I don’t necessarily think the likes of Bethesda mind their games staying at full price digitally-lots of games do on other formats in fact.
It means when they do discount their games during a sale it looks more dramatic. There are loads of studies on the psychological effect of a ‘massive % reduction’ sticker. Obviously it never works on me....(boots up Switch/XB1/PS4 and sees backlog)....Oh 😉
@Sim1
“the whole Lego scene in general is something else, milking it, milking it big time.”
I took the kids to Legoland at the weekend and there is no end in sight, believe me. They’re merciless. 😉
Though this does remind me to buy that Lego Expansion for FH4, the Hot Wheels on in FH3 was great.
This just in: Brits have awful taste in games. What is Anthem doing in the top 10? It's either that or it was a slow sales week. PlayStation VR Worlds at #7? How many PlayStation VR units are in the wild, anyway?
@wu_wei_lion 4.08 million up to the end of 2018...worldwide...
@electrolite77 😆😆😆
@electrolite77 Couldn't agree more, the other thing here with Sony is that with an install base of almost 100 million units they can basically do what they want, that's the number which allows them 2 sleep sound at night.
@NotTelevision lol yeah I know what u mean, if we could only recuperate all the money spent on games we didn't enjoy, crikey big bucks...but we'll get suckered again...and again...
@tonyt3rry Lego is definitely a quality product and I respect the way they operate their business, I suppose it's sort of the "modern way" with many forms of entertainment these days (and we should probably blame the Yanks for this), these so called "franchises" (not that Lego is a franchise) start out as one thing and the next time you look they're everywhere, for example Star Wars, how many movies across our lifetime will be pushed out before the bubble bursts ?, nobody knows but in the meantime Disney will "milk" the cash cow, and good luck 2 them.
@Sim1
Yeah Sony are in the real money-making phase now. They don’t have to sell hardware, just sit back and watch the conveyor belt of cash from software sales.
@electrolite77
What I've noticed throughout console generations, is that when a clear market leader emerges, it usually comes with some arrogance about not having to do anything anymore to make money. It just pours in. This attitude is usually what leads to downhill slope. It can take some time, but when you reach the top, you can either stay there or go down, there are no other options.
Sony is indeed in their money-making phase now. I just don't know how long it will last. Maybe it'll carry over through the next generation, but at some point, it'll start fading. And either Microsoft or even Nintendo (unlikely but we never know) will grab the top market spot, and it will only begin again, and again, and again... Top dogs never stay at the top for eternity. At some point, they become complacent and competitors just seize the opportunity.
Anyway, let's see what the future holds!
@Sim1 I stopped watching star wars after they rebooted them and disney went crazy with it. the lego games are fun co-op but game wise they are buggy as hell
