The developer of Cuphead is currently hard at work on the game's 'Delicious Last Course' DLC expansion. Once this is out, though, what exactly is StudioMDHR's plan for the future? It's to create another game!
During an interview with the Japanese magazine Famitsu, the siblings Chad and Jared Moldenhauer who founded StudioMDHR were asked about a potential sequel to the 2D run 'n gun platformer. Chad said they were still thinking about what to do and whatever the next game ends up being about, it will incorporate "2D hand-drawn" animation, as that's StudioMDHR style. Below is a translation, courtesy of Nintendo Everything:
“Because we are working now on the ‘Delicious Last Course’ DLC, most of our time is being taken up with that. But at the same time, we are still thinking about what we should do in the future. While that idea is still in the extremely early stages, we are building up the proof of concept and getting things ready. I can’t say anything about the content of the game yet, but given that 2D hand-drawn anime is our company’s focus, you can at least expect our next game to be in that same style.”
Have you tried out Cuphead on the Switch yet? Do you like this game's unique art style? Share your thoughts below.

Are they sure the translation was "anime" and not "animation"? Since Cuphead looks nothing like any anime I've watched and, as stated in the rest of the interview, was clearly based on 1930's cartoons.
Had no idea about the DLC, will look forward to that.
@Monkeido That's a great question. Maybe something is up with the translation. I've changed the title to reflect this.
@Monkeido Yup, I agree. This is clearly a mistranslation since the word "anime" in Japanese simply means "animation".
It’ll also possibly involve cutlery and require you to press buttons to play.
While its moste likely just meaning animation, I would love to see something that feels like it could be made by Osamu Tezuka. His mangas are amazing, and matches the artstyle of 30s cartoons.
I think they should stick with the hand drawn style cause they absolutely nailed it in Cuphead — seems they’ve found their calling. That said, I would love if they focused on a different era this time. For instance the 60s were some trippy times, I’d love to see what they could do with that.
Mistranslation or not, they are referring to animation and we all know anime is just a shorten word of that. Remember Japanese loves to shorten name of longer words ex: Pocket Monster is Pokemon, Joystick Controller is Joycon, Family Computer is Famicom, Service Games is Sega, magazine art is manga, etc. So animation is just anime and besides there are anime that are done in similar style to Cuphead such as Astro Boy and most of Studio Ghibli's stuff like Spirited Away.
I for one am shocked to learn that their next game will feature 2-D hand drawn animation again.
Pretty much everyone was expecting them to make a 3-D real time strategy game using polygon models next.
@Monkeido Anime is literally animation, you could tell a Japanese person that Ducktales is your favorite anime and they wouldn't bat an eye.
Cuphead was fantastically drawn. Curious to see what style of animation they will take on next.
I wonder if the Switch will be able to get that Xbox game Sable as well. It looks like it take a lot from Moebius comics and Breath of the Wild. Really looking forward to it.
As long as Cuphead gets a physical Switch release with the DLC included, they'll eventually get at least some money from me. If it's all it's been praised for (and even just half as beautiful as it looks and sounds), they'd have to try pretty hard to NOT sell another game like it to me.
Yep, I still havent got this yet because I want physical
They should go for 50’s/60’s animation next, go through the ages
I absolutely loved the art style of Cuphead, but just got sick of the grinding, unrelenting challenge of bossfight after bossfight. The beautiful art kept me going for a while but the nature of the game just stopped being fun and I never finished it 😕
@Liam_Doolan Glad you agree! As @Starcakes and @PrettyPatrick said, for Japanese people it's the same thing, though I think most others see "anime" as something different from "animation".
Main reason I tripped over the word, was because I thought: "Oh that could be cool, Cuphead in anime style", only to find out it wasn't really meant like that. ^^'
I swear, the developer needs to team up with Disney and release a Hand-Drawn Castle of Illusion sequel.
I'd prefer a metroidvania instead of another boss rush, but hey!
If Disney ever wants to go back to hard drawn animation they should hire these brothers.
@tobibra Tezuka's art style draws upon Carl Barks' sublime work on the "Uncle Scrooge" comics (which look a lot like Cuphead).

It would be a great match. I'd love a retro sci-fi game from the studio.
"2D hand-drawn anime"
Proof that any cartoon/animation can be considered anime over there and is just a uniform term over in the states.
Nintendo should hire them to make the art for a Paper Mario game.
Whatever they do, I’ll love it! I just finished Cuphead on my Switch and I thought it was extremely tough but never impossible. I think Sekiro was harder for me than Cuphead was.
What if he really did mean anime? MAKE A SAILOR MOON GAME!! lol
I don't know if the dlc is worth it or not.
Like if I get this game then idk if I should get the dlc with it.
@LaytonPuzzle27 Would love to see Disney hire them to make a game based on Godtfredson's Mickey Mouse stories
"given that 2D hand-drawn anime is our company’s focus..."
So we could be having something inspired by say, Dragon Ball Z?
Yessssssss this game was truly a challenge of wits. Some of those bosses took me 2hours to beat- but I did it! I’d love to tackle all the achievements before the DLC arrives but I’m not sure I can put myself thru extreme mode 🙃
There is a key difference between the look Cuphead went for, and succeeded so well at, and animation produced in Japan. There is much less variance in the drawing style. A consistent look across nearly all “cartoon art” is used, while US animation changes with different studios and eras. The cartoons of the 30s, like Cuphead emulates, had a different approach than the 40s even from Warner Bros alone. And you can see the difference between Warner and Disney and Fleischer and Terrytoons. Then in the TV era, Hanna Barbera evolved from Huckleberry Hound to Scooby Doo.
From Japan, the basic character designs seen in 60s shows like Gigantor and Speed Racer look a lot like what is produced today. That’s why when you say “Anime” you usually think of this look. It’s just the way it’s done there, where creators don’t concern themselves as much with bringing their design sense to it as they do the story and characters. They’ve actually done a good job of maintaining consistency, which you can’t say for Warner Bros, who haven’t been able to match 1940s Bugs Bunny since the 50s. Even when they’re trying to, Roger Rabbit looked like 1980s animation paying homage, but not like the 40s the story was set in.
Studio MDHR pulled off the best imitation of the 30s style I’ve ever seen. The game wouldn’t have worked as well if they hadn’t made it really feel like that era when all the studios went for this cheerful storybook style.
@retro_player_22 I've been playing video games since the 80s and never knew a lot of these short terms e.g Sega- you learn something new every day!
Cuphead was such a fun game. Challenging, but not impossible. The ultimate trail and error game.
What they need to do is make a new Ghost n Goblins/ Ghouls and Ghosts game but with the cuphead animation, can you even imagine how amazingly cool that would be.
only hand-drawn please. the games made like flash player are horrible. There is no soul in it and that's why we don't like many new 2D games. Because it's not at the same level. It's not charming at all. Can be cute, but something is missing and we all know it. Hand-drawn FTW
