Before you head off to your local cinema tomorrow to catch Pokémon Detective Pikachu, you might want to give this fanmade demake video a watch. You know, for a healthy mix of fresh excitement and nostalgia.
The folks over at Nintendo Wire have shared this Game Boy Color-inspired demake of the film's first official trailer, reimagining particular scenes in the style of the early Pokémon games. The use of Pokémon Yellow's Pikachu face box to show emotion is a nice touch - as is the chiptune version of The Turtles' 'Happy Together'.
You can compare it with the real trailer below if you like; the opening scene in Nintendo Wire's version kicks in at around 0:34, with other scenes being chosen throughout.
What do you think? A clever little project? We'd happily buy a copy of Pokémon Yellow: Detective Pikachu Edition based on this...

Cute, although I'm not sure if the chiptune rendition of 'Happy Together' is accurate to the Game Boy hardware.
It sounds like it might've been thrown through GXCSS, which produces audio closer to a different system that I can't recall the name of.
I'm looking forward to seeing the movie on Tuesday and will be avoiding spoilers (if there are any) as much as possible before then.
This would be better than the 3DS version.
Right in the nostalgia! I'd play a demake even if it was based more off of the movie. The actual game was pretty decent too.
Cool. Going to see it on Saturday
I loved the movie! Got to go to a special screening in LA. My brain couldn’t take in all the references so I can’t wait to see it again ASAP!!
Nintendo Wire always has good stuff... glad to see them featured here

GXCSS is a small Windows application that takes MIDI files as input, then plays it back with a somewhat chiptune like sound.
For authentic NES/Famicom sounds though, you'll want to look into FamiTracker, that's what's used to produce sound that can be played back on real hardware, and it often used for games like Shovel Knight.
That was pretty cool.
