It's taken what feels like forever, but Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night finally has a solid release date.
The much-delayed title – which set crowdfunding records a few years back – will hit Nintendo Switch on June 25th, a little behind the PS4, Xbox One and PC editions, which all launch on June 18th.
Retail versions will follow on June 21st (PS4, Xbox One, PC) and June 28th (Switch).
The new trailer – posted above – shows the many visual improvements that have been made to the game over the past few months. The trailer even pokes fun at the flood of negative comments about how the game looks, with IGA stating he will prove the naysayers wrong. It's a cool touch.
Will this spiritual successor to Castlevania have been worth the wait? We don't have long to find out.

Bout freakin time! Pretty excited to sink my teeth into this one. Hopefully it lives up to the expectations.🤘
My birthday is June 19th . . . . not happy about the Switch version releasing a week later.
Nice, I was expecting it to be later in the year.
I got my physical copy pre-ordered from 365 Games already, although June 28th, that's the same day as Super Mario Maker 2. That'll be tough.
I don't know why, but I have a feeling the Switch version is going to be released in a far worse state than the other versions.
Unfortunately, I'm way past caring anymore.
Hahaha, I love this video !
Gameplay still seems a little odd and slow to me but it looks like a fuc**** great hommage to Castlevania by its own creator.
And I want to encourage that.
Day one for me. But not on Switch.
I need it to be smooth and I guess Switch is only 30fps.
Very close to Crash Team Racing and Mario Maker 2
A 7-day delay? Doesn't make much sense, what can you do in that timeframe? Hope these frequent Switch delays on games will stop when Switch continues to break sell records.
@OmegaDestroyer Like most games, it'll run at a higher resolution and be a smoother gameplay experience on other systems. It also won't be fully portable on those systems. Pick your poison.
So in the video Koji Igarashi say he will "prove them wrong" by updating the visuals which is what everyone wanted.
I think that is proving everyone right!
Switch stats:
Undocked: 720p (fixed) / 30 fps
Docked: 720p (dynamic) / 30 fps with additional effects / visuals, etc.

I for one, after watching this latest release date video, have had my hype restored. It looks GREAT, especially after those graphical enhancements/tweaks.
I wonder why the release date difference for Switch... approval for eshop delay? Doesn’t make a difference, I’m getting it on Switch and dat’s dat.
What brick and mortar stores will carry it here in the USA?
Probably not the switch version in the video. Looks interesting though. After getting dead cells last week the gameplay looks painfully laboured.
But was that Switch footage of Bloodstained No. 9?!?
Haha holy hell, what a geezer! Brilliant clip. Pre-ordered it of course.
@Starvald
I won't buy this game, because it looks kinda bland and boring, in my opinion. But even if I were interested in it, I STILL wouldn't buy it, because I don't want to support lazy/incapable developers, who can't make a game, which basically looks like a PS2 game, run decently on the Switch.👎
I am really looking forward to this game!
Pre-ordered to join my backlog, especially as it has a physical
I have to wait so much for the retail how to avoid watching YT lets plays?!?
@MrBlacky 720p30 handheld is decent, docked should've been 900p30 at least though.
Anyway, I will play this handheld only on the Switch. And on my PC since I backed it for 2 copies.
@Ralizah
I know. I'm referring to the issues they had with the Switch version at PAX East, notably the massive frame rate drops. I hope the issue is resolved for release but I have little faith it will be.
@GameOtaku Best Buy will have the physical version. That's where I'll be getting it from.
@sanderev i think the other versions will run at 60FPS so I am not sure it is that decent.
@Medic_alert I think that is what they mean based on the KS comments
I don't even know why I backed this. For a platformer that is so graphically undemanding not be 60FPS on Switch still baffles me. I liked curse of the moon though.
It looks lovely, can't wait.
I'm getting it on PC for several reasons, although if I end up liking the game as much as I'm expecting to, I'll also grab a retail copy of the Switch version.
Srill not loving the charcater animation but it loks feraking beautiful with its new skin.
I'm still interested in this, but I think I'll wait for reviews before I bite.
@Megal0maniac
Somehow it's been this way since the Wii or the Wii U era. Don't know why it is like this. Especially Warner Bros games like Injustice have been released on Nintendo consoles a week later than on other consoles
@OmegaDestroyer I guess we'll see how honest the "overheating" excuse was. I expect youtubers to ring the alarm bells on performance issues in the Switch version prior to release if they're egregious.
@Fake-E-Lee had heard how great DC was but waited till a cheap physical was available and boy did it match the hype. The flow and controls are just spot on and feel extremely fluid it all feels so natural when playing. Hopefully the slight slowdown (when the action gets busy / damn bats !) will be patched soon.
My local retailer still has a Septemer 17th date... Probably will be corrected soon. Definitely going Physical for this one, especially since I got the Limited Run of "Curse of the Moon". Hopefully it will be at least as good as that one. Graphics seem to be mostly improved, though I still wish it'd have been 2D.
Ok Iga, now... SHOW ME!
I love that he took all the comments and put them in the trailer. Dudes got some stones! Now let's hope he actually does prove people wrong and delivers a great game. I loved curse of the moon but it was a little more linear. I feel like the difficulty in this game will be highly spiked. Either way, I'll grab it, but it may not be at release. I have so much to play and no time to do it. Plus cash is getting tight. I also want to store some money in the esop funds for shadow drops at e3
Awesome! I'm going to pre order right now actually lol.
looks really good now
The character movement seems a bit slow at times but am looking forward to seeing what reviews say. Am still on the fence with this one.
Already kickstarted so looking forward to playing this, though I have the PS4 version as my code if i remember correctly.
@smashboy2000 IGA didn't create the Castlevania series, he stagnated it into that exploration style that ended up killing the franchise.
So is the switch version between the old and new?
@OmegaDestroyer https://mynintendonews.com/2019/04/29/the-bloodstained-ritual-of-the-night-team-says-that-the-games-switch-version-suffered-from-overheating-at-pax-east/
Hey, we'd all actually like him to be correct. . . .
Looks so much better now. Old version reminded me too much of the visuals for the PSP version of Dracula X Chronicles. Dark, grey, dull, boring, awful. Glad he took note of fan comments and improved it!
That’s going to be an expensive week with this, Mario Maker, and Guacamelee.
Don’t worry, IGA. I’ll play it.
That trailer is this games “anime fan on prom night” moment way to PR team you nailed it!
I am always worries when it comes to "spiritual successors" to a beloved franchise. And yes I am referring to Mighty #2. Or is it #9?
@Dragnoran
30fps for this kinda game?! If they can’t manage to hit 60fps on other systems and/or having awful performance like MN9 it’s fate is sealed.
I'm very likely going to play it, depending on the price, because the game doesn't look like a total dumpster fire, it's visually impressive, has a cute lead and looks like it'll have a good amount of depth. But I'm not expecting perfection.
It'll likely be a wait-for-sale type of deal for me, but not a total pass.
I want this to be good and be successful. I have high hopes still. <3
Hopefully with a decent framerate.
@DTfeartheBEARD
Any word if Walmart or Gamestop will carry it?
Looks like Walmart will have it also.
@CrazyZelda79 That is true, but I never saw Vita feleases frequently delayed a week after all other platforms.
It would be nice if Iga also decided to reverse the late cancellation of versions for Mac and Linux PCs. Yes, they are much smaller for gaming than Windows, yet they are more viable in 2019 than they were in 2015 when they promised those versions and were happy to take people's money based on those promises(no refunds in this case). There are definitely some people who backed specifically because those were promised platforms and not even stretch goals, as the cancelled and ill-advised Wii U version was(I knew that was a bad idea straight away). This project was poorly handled. I have no enthusiasm left for this.
I still have high hopes for this game, but I'm so nervous given it's development cycle has been kind of painful.
Why does the switch release a week later? They can't say it's to improve on it it anything, I reckon the switch version will suck ass,,, shame I was hoping for thins on my switch, gota get it for my Xbox now I feel
Utterly preposterous.
Millions of Dollars for a poo like that ?
I'm going to spend my time with Shanoa again, I guess.
I’d say, 30 fps are sufficient for Metroidvanias. I’m more worried about a constant 30 fps than not reaching the 60ies. :/
Wow! Those improvements are actually pretty significant! I totally want this game now!
Gotta say ... suddenly it looks a LOT better. Not just higher detail either. Things look less wooden.
Looks great.
Backed this a long time ago, and subsequently changed platforms to Switch.
720p handheld is what I like to hear. 720p docked with improved visuals seems meh though. Still, HD handheld is where it's at.
This, mutant year zero and Mario maker 2 all within 3 days? June is turning into an expensive month...
@NintenDan_ Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 follows in July and I think Cadence of Hyrule (which I'm picking to be a surprise crossover classic) will likely drop in this window, as well. It's going to be a CRAZY set of releases this summer.
What is a YouTube comment section? A miserable little pile of secrets!
@Edu23XWiiU Horrible comment. Those we're all perfect/near perfect games. Never remotely approached "this is getting old". Just kept getting better and more refined, and all had enough differences to shake up the game design and play style between them.
Somehow there were only 2 Lords of Shadows releases and that felt stagnant 5 minutes into the 1st game.
Is your assessment true of all the other IPs Konami took to the grave with them? Gee, I wonder what killed those too? Couldn't have possibly been horrible business.
so the lesson is, complain when neccesary?!
Can't we all just hate the Sonic movie trailer?
Is there any explanation for why the Switch version is coming out later? I've had more faith in this damn game than I do in myself, and I have since the moment it was announced. I know that it's no use complaining but I just feel somewhat cheated. I paid my $60 well in advance but I gotta wait a week while others that didn't reserve a copy in advance can just buy to play on release? Well if I had known that, I wouldn't have backed it! But I did, and I paid in advance to make sure that I could play the game as soon as it came out. Oh but it's just dumb Nintendo luck that the Switch, among the 3 other platforms this gets released on, is the only one to have a delayed release. I really was at peak hype for the game by the end of the trailer until I realized I have to wait a week longer than every other platform for no apparent reason (and if there is a reason I'm sure it's a garbage one)
I apologize for the salty rant but it's a bitter pill to swallow when one of the few games you're truly looking forward to that you invested cash and faith in just dicks you out of the blue
well yes, this will be amazing!
Hot dang, Iga, you have regained my respect!
Actually looking at the final picture on screen and going "hmmm, are these really colors that look cool together? Could it be better?"
This is the video I was waiting for.
@Gorlokk
All other releases likely run almost the same build, whereas the Switch version probably has COMPLETELY different requirements and limitations, do to the hardware. Aside from this, publishing on a Nintendo platform in general is associated with a longer approvement period.
Both have in some instances proven unpredictably long.
Now, any publisher could decide to delay all other versions to accomodate, but I'd assume Iga want this in the hands of backers as soon as possible. This game was fully crowdfunded long before the Switch was even announced, and letting everyone wait because of this one platform would probably get him in trouble.
If there are no differences in the versions I will get the Switch version. I dont undock my switch but maybe I would more for a 2D game.
But if there’s any difference in performance, I’ll get PS4 version.
I assume no physical release initially?
I look forward to this, I backed in back in the day. I might like more the minigame Curse of the moon, because I prefer 2D sprites. Still i believe RotN will be great!
@KevTastic84
Wouldn't bet on it, but WILL wait for it.
Same release date as super Mario maker 2....which one should be a release date purchase....
@gutsy Why do you think he's not in Konami anymore? I don't say they're bad, I enjoyed Portrait of Ruin, a LOT, but they were basically the same game, with different characters, at least the older games tried different stuff. The second IGA did something different with the franchise, he messed up big time (Castlevania Judgement). Besides, since he and Kojima left, Konami is making more money than ever.
@OmegaDestroyer watch the switch version be the old style and all the other versions get the new look
@Edu23XWiiU Making money maybe idk, but they aren't making games. Batting cages, pachinko, and card games killed Castlevania, MGS, Goemon, etc... not lack of quality. Order was the next evolution with the town hub and quests, that was a huge addition and hopefully there's some of that fleshed out even more in Bloodstained. Judgement was never going to be more than a forgotten product of the time, probably not the best idea though.
This feels like castlevania. the good ones on ds. i need this. I miss the series from back then
@gutsy They wanted to position as their main product at the time, and IGA was behind it. Still, they're making money without them, and releasing older games of their golden age, I don't ask for more, well, only for a MGS collection...
Have been anxiously waiting for the release of this game, but honestly gave up on a release date anytime soon with the previous delays. Looking forward to June now! Between the Castlevania Anniversary collection and Bloodstained, I'll be a busy boy!
@Terrible_Majesty
Totally expecting it now.
