Video game movies, television series and animations are all the rage right now. Following this recent trend is Dragon Quest.
If you're a fan of Square Enix's long-running JRPG series which started out on the Famicom in 1986, you may or may not have heard the news earlier this year about a 3D animated film based on the story of Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride - the fifth instalment in the series, released on the Super Famicom in 1992 and re-released on the Nintendo DS in 2008.
The upcoming movie titled Dragon Quest: Your Story is due out in Japanese cinemas on 2nd August this year. To promote it, an action-packed trailer has been released. It also confirms the legendary composer Kouichi Sugiyama is returning and the music throughout the film will be performed by the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra.
There's currently no word on a western release, but if anything is announced, we'll be sure to let you know.
What do you think of this trailer? Would you like to see it translated? Have you played the game it is based on? Tell us below.

Awesome, now why can't Dragon Ball Z had movies like this. Also it's based on the best Dragon Quest game ever made for the Super NES and Nintendo DS, that's spectacular.
The character design looks like Big Hero 6.
I’m getting some pleasant How to Train Your Dragon vibes from this.
That IS one of the better stories in the series, but I don't think I'll be needing to see it in the form of a three-acts motion picture.
This is what Final Fantasy: Spirits Within should have been like.
OMG! I'm a huge fan of the series and of this specific game, and didn't know about this film!
this should be great
Never played the games, but this looks right up my street, will keep an eye, hopefully it will be released in Europe
fuh, i never expected this film could have looked so amazing!!!
This looks amazing, who ever did the CGI for this did a rather tremendous job. Wonder if this is get dubbed though.
The lack of Akira Toriyama human design is surprising, but this does look great. The monsters keep that distinct look nicely.
Bjørn the Behemoose is looking great too.
@Pod you do. when you're too lazy to play the game. Just lay down and the movie will play the story for you. See? you do need. Get it a.s.a.p. when it's released. LOL. Just kidding
First DQ game I ever beat was V, so this excites me muchly. With XI, Builders, and (to a smaller degree) Heroes getting the series more traction over here, I sincerely hope they bring this West.
can we have the dragon quest games on switch please?
DQ series have some really good storylines. this could be good
Seems pretty good. Will see if it will come to the rest of the world.
As long as they have a decent story in there this looks like it could be good.
Wow! Looks amazing. This is the style I've always wanted some of my favorite games to look like in film
Looks much better than I expected. The battle with the green attack splashes and the abstracted facial features on creatures just about work in the context. Probably will feel normal after a few minutes. Worth a look, for sure.
@Anti-Matter
More like How to Train Your Dragon Quest
I would have preferred hand-drawn, but I'm just an outsider looking in I guess.
This looks pretty cool! But this begs the question: who will the protagonist marry?
Oh...my...God...
This looks AMAZING. PLEASE let it come to America. PLEEEEEEAAAAASE. I'm begging you! TAKE ALL MY MONEY. TAKE IT!!!!
bianca and nera? this looks like a reimagined dragon quest 5
