In a free update available as you read these very words, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is getting two-player co-op support for all courses.
Not only that, but there's also a set of paid DLC - Captain Toad's Special Episode - coming in a month's time (14th March, to be precise). This will include 18 new challenges, 5 new courses, and new objectives in existing courses.
New players will be able to buy the base game and the DLC in a new digital bundle from today with access to the new stuff when it releases. Buying it today gives you one of the new courses early, though you'll have to wait until March for the rest.
Does this tempt you to dig back into Captain Toad with a friend or have you already played this to death? Let us know below.

How much does the DLC cost? 5 stages isn't much
No 3ds dlc why so sad well thats to bad for me
I'm always down for more treasure trackin'
Kind of a slap in the face to anyone that bought one of the other two versions. Hopefully it sells badly and they don't do this for any of their other ports.
this really does make the Switch version the definitive release, doesn't it?
sorry, Wii U and 3DS.
This was a great surprise for me. Loved it on the Wii u and double dipped and now I can play this coop with my kids
Might pick this game up now. Loved it on the Wii u and quite fancy new content.
If the price is reasonable, I'll probably get the dlc, when the Switch starts winding down. I don't feel a strong need for my Captain Toad, with the amount of big games coming out this year.
@ReaderRagfihs I was hoping for that and I really thought this was coming. I’ll keep hoping
I’ll pick the dlc up not finished base yet though
B/c giving Nintendo $350 for a system they abandoned after only 4 years wasn't enough, they need to constantly remind us we shouldn't have bought the system or any of the games b/c they keep getting better later. 😝
Oh well, at least SMM was a 2 and not a D. I suppose if SMM2 requires paid online at least we had that going for us.
More of Captain Toad is a happy Captain Toad.
Captain Toad Treasure Tracker is on my to buy list, so this will be good to have.
I tried the demo and just found the controls a little awkward. I am just too much of a traditionalist in that regard.
I guess I'll be selling my Wii U copy now that the game is getting DLC stages. Although I'll likely wait until the Switch version goes on sale.
Joke, they should have released mk8 dlc instead of this average game, they would have made millions
Worth mentioning in your article that it's Switch only, with 3DS buyers being shafted. Seems like a cheek to pile paid DLC onto a full-price port, if you ask me.
The 3DS version’s controls are better than the Switch’s (I played both demos) so that’s the one I went with. Guess I’m being punished for supporting their system at the end of its life.
This just arrived in the mail yesterday and played some last night, so this was a nice extra.
The fact that there was zero mention of the 3DS in this direct and that these additional levels are skipping that version seem to put another nail in that old haldheld’s coffin.
I will wait the Re:Release of physical version with DLCs inside.
The dlc is £5.39 and you get to play shifty shrine today. Captain toad deserves all the love
2 player fun too.
I’m going sleep
@rjejr why so tacky on matters of basic consumerism, they didn't force you to buy a product it was entirely of your own free will. This is years later when you should have already found enjoyment from those products... this is sour grapes from the wrong batch. It's not even conceivable to me that you should be jealous of people buying these last iterations of products during a new Nintendo console generation.
For those of you living in the US, the DLC costs $5.99. Not too bad for a few stages and a bunch of bonus objectives.
@MarioLover92 That's not bad at all. I just picked up $60 of eShop credit for $50 during one of those online deals, so some of that money will be going towards this and the Smash DLC.
Need to get back into the game...to many backlogs.
Wow, I'd love to play this DLC on 3DS, but I guess that's what I get for showing Nintendo there are still (a few) people who appreciate the system.
Guess I won't be double-dipping on the game...
I loved this game on Wii U definitely undervalued in my opinion. I’ve wanted to pick it up again but haven’t because there didn’t seem to be much difference- this is making me reconsider.
@klingki Where was this online deal taking place? I never find many deals on eshop cards at all..
@Mamabear It was Newegg. I read about it on Twitter.
@klingki thanks!
I will almost definitely buy the dlc. Just slightly annoyed as I bought the game last week on discount!
@OptometristLime It is sour grapes. It's exactly that. And those count too.
Ok, real world situation to get the point across.
Have you ever dated someone, had them dump you, then you saw them looking good and hot later on with someone else and felt bad? If not, then I can't explain it to you, you're a better person than I if you've found yourself in that situation and found nothing but joy in your heart for the 2 new people in their relationship.
Me, I'm not over getting dumped yet. And I won't be until Nintneod stops reminding me. Ports are one thing. Let them port whatever they want, I've already played it, I don't care. I like ports, more people should get to enjoy some of these games, the more the merrier. And sequels are fine too, let them make all the sequels they want, I like sequels and I play sequels. Those games are fine. But how many games now have they added stuff to for games that I paid the same price for, and now people are getting that stuff free? MK8 got a real battle mode. Captain Toad is getting this 2 player DLC. NSMBU got Daisy and Toadette. I don't mind the Pokken Tournament DX stuff, people bought a game called DX and THEN had to pay extra for extra. So that's fine.
The real problem is these are Nitnedo games that they themselves put out, then they ported them, which again is fine. But they keep adding stuff to games I bought but for some reason my version of the game doesn't get the added DLC. Over and over and over again. They dont' have to not port the game and they don't have to not add stuff, they just have to add the stuff to the Wii U version they're adding to the Switch version. After all it's only fair, they stripped the entire Wii U Gamepad usage out of Zelda BotW after they showed it to us and told us how great it was. Then they ripped it out so the Wii U version wouldn't be better than the Switch version, b/c it very well would have been, TP:HD and WWLHD proved that. And XCX.
So yeah, sour grapes it is.
I though they'd restore the 3D World levels too,oh well too bad
I'm planning to get it. Like others have commented the 3D World levels would have been nice, but at least they're adding content at a reasonable price
Have gotten loads of enjoyment out of Capt. Toad, so will be buying the extra content for sure.
I'm shocked that Mario Party didn't get an expansion. It sold much more than Treasure!
I think Nintendo is wrong not to release the dlc alongside the 3ds. I mean they are the one who release both a switch and 3ds versions last June. So it doesn't make sense to add it to one version and not the other.
Also I'm a champion for the 3ds and always will but I found it hilarious how many people are quick to condemn the 3ds since the switch came out. I mean it serve no purpose. So you move on to the switch, big deal that great. But there are still those that love the 3ds still, me included. Of course I love all of the Nintendo consoles and still play them. I don't just abandoned them when a new system come out.
Will this come to the 3DS version? I decided not to sell Wii U version and rebuy it for Switch because there were different levels and preferred, if I had to double dip, to have the 3D version for the 3D effect, but if the new stages are not coming to the old portable... that would be a shame.
@ImagineerNik a little over £5 in the UK eShop. 5 courses, 18 new challenges and additional crowns to obtain in every level of the base game.
@tourjeff Think about what you said a bit, there, and you'll get it.
Releasing DLC for something that sold less has the benefit of extracting more money from fans and bringing it up again in news and conversations which can lead to more new sales (they are even selling toad as a bundle).
I'm guessing Mario Party is selling just fine without DLC or additional mentions.
I'm not trying to be cynical about it either. Captain Toad was an interesting smaller-game experiment that seems to have some success, but not with a wider market. Most DLC is targeted at a much smaller group, the core fans of a game, which can be great. They are willing to pay for the extra stuff because they already love the game, and others who aren't super fans weren't forced to pay more money for content they weren't going to want.
That said, I wouldn't be surprised if Mario Party got some DLC if and when the sales begin to decline. It's a great game, but it has a reputation to re-establish.
@17Eclipse07 The 3DS literally takes development resources and actual releases from the Switch (and worse, the Wii U that needed them desperately) and puts them in a place that I can barely enjoy: a cramped control scheme, an unsharable experience, and a tiny pair of low-res screens. That's why I'm ready for it to stop being a focus for Nintendo.
That's just me. I understand why it's around, and I actually love the 3D (with the face-tracking), but this helps explain why people are ready for it to go. Especially now that the Switch is so portable and popular.
I quite enjoyed my Wii U of the game but I was always skeptical about double dipping for the Switch version for the few new stages. Now that it have 2-player co-op I feel more tempted to buy it since now I can share the experience with my player 2, which also adds to the gameplay.
So the people who supported them during the Wii U days get the shaft, eh.
@aaronsullivan
I still stand by my opinion. If Nintendo plan this for switch only to get dlc then they shouldn't have release both a switch and 3ds versions. If one get dlc then all should get it. So i can understand 3ds users getting ignored. It not a good feeling and many of us pay money for 3ds version with some inkling of getting bonus content.
Also im not ready to give up my 3ds until Nintendo either create a successor or a mini switch that can allow you to play 3ds games. I have 80+ games at around 400-500 dollars. I'm not just gonna toss it away. Also im one that will not bring a switch outta of the house to get stolen or wreck. 300 dollars is not easy to replace.
@Charlie_Girl There will probably be a Definitive Master HD release on the Switch U (the thing that comes after the Switch in a couple of years)
I'm not bothered with the Wii u not receiving the update/dlc, but I am upset about the 3ds not getting the new stages. When you sell two versions of the game at the same time and say that you'll still be supporting the system, then leave 3ds users without the new stuff because they choose that version on launch day, that's upsetting and just rude.
Skipping the 3ds version is dumb. If anything, the 3ds version is the better of the two (tried both demos).
A pity that I won't get to play the dlc, but I have already the Wii u version.
@17Eclipse07 I hope you get your mini-Switch soon (could be end of this year?) and nobody should toss their 3DS and collection! Keep it for decades to come.
@aaronsullivan
Thank Aaron! That the plan. I know 3ds is nearing the end but i still love it! Still got a backlog of games to play.
