After teasing fans towards the end of last week, Pokémon GO developer Niantic has finally lifted the lid on all the juicy details regarding the app's upcoming Trainer Battle system. The best news is that things are scheduled to kick off this month.
Trainer Battles will allow players to challenge their real-life friends to a battle at any time. You'll need to share a Battle Code between yourselves, assemble a team of three Pokémon, and then attempt to blast each other to smithereens on the battlefield. Both trainers, regardless of who wins and who loses, will receive rewards for their troubles, including a chance at rare evolution items (hopefully including the recently released Sinnoh Stone).
Battles appear to play out in a similar fashion to Gym and Raid battles, with players hammering their screens and choosing between Fast and Charged attack options. There's more to think about than usual, however, as you'll be able to use Stardust and Candy to unlock a bonus Charged Attack for your Pokémon and you can even deploy a Protect Shield to save your Pokémon from critical damage - Niantic hasn't revealed how this happens just yet, but it appears to be related to timing.
To help you stand a chance against your Level 40 know-it-alls, each Trainer must compete in the same Trainer Battle League, which determines the CP limit for all participating Pokémon. This way, battles are more down to your tactics rather than just who managed to snag the strongest Tyranitar.
An interesting thing to note is that Ultra Friends and Best Friends will be able to challenge each other from any distance; you'll need to be standing right next to anyone who hasn't yet reached those requirements with you. This is a pleasantly surprising addition, and theoretically means that you can arrange battles with your friends at any time. You can also earn rewards once per day in training sessions against your Team Leader (Spark, Candela, or Blanche).
Have you been waiting for PvP battles to arrive in Pokémon GO? Will you be challenging your nearest and dearest friends? Let us know in the comments below.

Honestly, it looks good.
There was a lot of concern that it would be exactly like the gym/raid battles, but this looks to have a degree of strategy after all.
You know what? I might start playing this game again.
A whole 2 moves... oh hang on you get a 3rd shielding move (Protect?)... wow
I was curious at first, because a decent PvP system would've gotten me interested 8n Pokemon Go. But after seeing and reading all of the info on this, I can't say I've been swayed. While it looks better than the raid tapfests, it's still not at a point I'd consider fun.
That's a shame.
About time I can do something with my friends 100's of miles away.
I’m definitely going to try this. I’m not really sure if I’m impressed by this though, I like traditional Pokémon battles, turn based and more moves and so on... I guess I’ll find out pretty soon.
I hope the update include a refinement to the transferring between Go and let's Go it's so unstable and frustrating.
@Kit it's actually the two standard gym and raid moves (a fast attack and a charge attak), plus a second charge attack and the Protect shield (with a limited usage, kind of like a low PP).
So, that's a total of 4 moves if you consider all Pokémon have Protect as a move, which is almost always possible. I'd say it's pretty close to the spirit of main game even though it's obviously a different mechanic.
So pumped for this - I just wish you could challenged by people around you, that you didn't even know were playing the game. "Challenge another Trainer using a Battle Code," is kind of a bummer (unless you can send a notification to randoms in proximity to you.
Took long enough! Time to get abosolutly destroyed by my friends!
This might be enough to get me back interested.
@Dang69 the privacy altercations would be a PR nightmare. The media would latch onto the idea a predator could use it to lure children nearby, ignoring that fact that very few kids seem to play it. It’s all 20-100 old people around my area!
Looks good - almost enough for me to start playing GO again!
...for a few weeks anyway, I lose interest in it quite easily.
"...you'll be able to use Stardust and Candy to unlock a bonus Charged Attack..."
What's the point of doing that? You get rewards even if you lose. Waste 1000 stardust to get 500 stardust.
Interesting, technically we get four moves, but one of them is always Protect? This could be quite fun... though it does make it tough to choose whether to build Pokémon as a Raider or Battles.
As someone who plays PoGo regularly with 2 accounts I can comfortably say I have absolutely zero interest in PvP battles in this game. There is no strategy or skill involved. I will probably make my 2 accounts battle sometimes for the rewards, but that is it.
About time.. I’ll try it out
Here my Friend code.
