Drinkbox Studios has revealed that both games in the Guacamelee series are headed to Nintendo Switch; Guacamelee! 2 is arriving later this year, while its predecessor Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition is available to download right now.
We haven't seen a Guacamelee game on a Nintendo platform since the original Super Turbo Championship Edition's launch on Wii U; Guacamelee! 2 arrived on PC and PS4 earlier this year, but no Switch version had been confirmed up until now. The games have been praised for their well-executed Metroid-inspired gameplay, with their co-op nature being a great fit for the Switch's pick-up-and-play multiplayer setup.
If you need convincing on checking out the game on Switch, here's what we said about the game's Wii U release in our review:
"Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition is another top-notch download to grace the Wii U eShop. While the initial campaign may be deemed short by some, the opportunities to explore, collect, take on challenges or simply play it again should deliver more than enough bang for your buck... In addition to being a fun gameplay experience, it's also an example of how artistic vision and clever, light-hearted writing can enhance an experience, an example of what can be achieved when development studios devote themselves fully to delivering a high quality product."
At the time of writing, Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition is available to download from the European eShop for £11.99; we expect the North American store to update soon.

Physical please!
Already have the Wii U vers. but great game once you get going, my preferred Metroidvania so far.
Great game
Oh man, this is great news. I haven't played the original in a couple of years and will definitely double dip. Bring on the sequel ASAP!
Nice! Guacamelee is one of my favourite PC games of all time, so I should definitely try out the sequel when it arrives on the Switch.
Wow, 2 was supposed to be a PS4 exclusive. Great!
The first one is great and really fun! Definitely try it if you can.
Oh cool, that was unexpected. I was looking through the eShop not long ago, must have been just a bit too early.
Magnificent! They're both fantastic games, though I think I enjoyed the first a bit more.
Would adore to get these physical for Switch.
Surprise indeed. I waited a good while before getting it on Vita alongside a few other metroidvanias, and that seems to have been the right investment with La Mulana (whereof we're only getting the sequel), yet here we are. Another eventual double-dip for me, then! XD Guacamelee 2 is naturally welcome news, too.
Can't wait for the second one. Played the first one to 100% so won't be double dipping on it, have enough of a backlog as it is.
Dope! I'll def pick this up at some point.
@Moroboshi876
They probably realize it'll sell better on Switch. That's nothing against Sony, but literally every multiplatform indie since the Switch's launch have sold best on the hybrid. Haven't bought a new indie game on my PC since last March, baby!
Canadian studio giving us an awesome gift on Thanksgiving Day!!
My wanted list has just increased (again!)
Awesome! This was one of my fav games from Wii U that I never finished .... Switch makes it soooooo much easier to actually play these games since you are not tethered to TV!
HELL YES. Double dipping for sure. Anyone who likes Metroidvania games and haven't played these, I implore you to play them. One of the best Metroidvanias out there.
I played the first one and it was awesome. I'll wait for the second one though.
The original has the greatest morph ball power up in the history of gaming.
Yes! I was actually thinking about Guac 2 this morning, hoping it would arrive on Switch.

I was coming on here to comment that it didn't look all that great from the trailer but the user comments are all praising the game. Maybe I'll pick this up then since the consensus seems to be that it's a great game.
@Dalarrun I prefer to think it will be available on all platforms period. Xbox One owners also have a heart!
I'm so happy to hear this! The music is soothing and beautiful in Guacamelee. Sometimes I turn it on just to hear the gentle trumpets and warm acoustic guitar. Definitely buying both of these! If physical versions came out simultaneously with the digital versions, I would buy the cartridges.
I have the first on Wii U but I never got into it and I don’t want to touch my Wii U anymore. Tempted. Will definitely get the second eventually.
@Moroboshi876
Oh definitely, I think it should be on Xbox One as well. Sorry if I made it seem like I encourage exclusivity xD
Nice, I've heard great things about this one, and Switch is definitely the platform I'd prefer it on. Then we got this beauty coming tomorrow:
Great week for the Switch.
oh dip this bananas
Well this is a nice surprise after the Konami/Castlevania bs. Of course I already have it on Vita, PS3, PS4 and WiiU, but...the Switch is just too convenient.
Yeesssssss!!!
@justin233 sell your WiiU to someone with sense.
@Jimgamer8 Which Castlevania? The 3D ones? I heard they aren't that great.
@Spoony_Tech I knew you'd be happy with this,as am I. I absolutely loved the original and enjoyed it even more on my 2nd playthrough. I won't be buying the 1st again but the sequel shall be mine day one.
I’ve been waiting for these to come to Switch. I knew it’d happen!! It just felt weird having Juan in Brawlout in Switch but not his own game!😂😅
Nice. Finally the games get the sales numbers they deserve.
But no online coop
Best news ever!!!!
Yessssssssss
@MisterKorman bs=disappointing. I’ve pre-ordered it, and have the originals on my Vita/PSP, PSX and DuoRX. Sony exclusive just annoying, and I don’t know why Konami wants to ignore the Nintendo fan base. Hell, they were happy to put it on XB360
The game always looked fun, but I never picked it up. I'm happy it's on the system, but I'm tired of indie platformers always being either 8/16-bit or metroidvanias. I like the art direction, but I just don't think the metroidvania genre is for me. I haven't beaten a single game with that format.
@Dalarrun the Symphony of the Night/Rondo of Blood Collection they just announced exclusive for PS4. I’ve got limited experience with 3D Castlevania - PS2 and 360 games. More God of War/Ninja Gaiden play mechanic
Got the first one on Wii U a few years ago. Very good game and over all not too difficult, but for some reason the patterns and the combos you had to do on the last boss became too much for me. Should maybe give it a go again on the Switch. I'll for sure buy the second one anyway! Nice surprise
@Jimgamer8
Yeah that's pretty weird, I remember buying SotN on Xbox 360. Konami is a joke anyway.
I love you, Drink Box Studios!
@NImH Or not. I’ll want to play it again someday. Just not soon.
Played the first one on PC, but didn't really like the focus on platforming and the visuals at the time. I was playing Hollow Knight too at that moment, so maybe that's why I couldn't get into it.
Will play it again for sure sometime.
@MisterKorman There shouldn't be any financial burden to putting a game developed in the late 90s on the Switch though. If this were a new Castlevania in 3D a la Lords of Shadow I would agree with you but that's not the case.
They could probably have an intern change the button prompts from PlayStation to Switch in a weekend and make a killing off of it.
The only thing to dampen this wonferful Monday surprise/gift...the 'physical release' brigade.
I will definitely be picking this up! I played it a bit on Xbox but as I played it I felt like it belonged on the switch. What a great surprise!
@Giygas_95 Mark of the Ninja is a really cool game indeed. Played it on Steam when it came out. No EU release date for the Switch version yet. Weird.
This is lovely news; I adore this series and was hoping they would eventually come out to Switch. Definitely picking these up; backlog be damned. Lol.
@Vriess Yeah, that's a shame. I feel like Nintendo could do a lot to help indie developers get their games out everywhere at once.
Owning and having played the original on WiiU...wait, or buy both?
Dang. I want to pick this up but I'm saving for Diablo 3.
Peal the avocado...
@Dalarrun The ethos of indie games tends to end itself to portables.
No physical no buy! There is not enough time to also play digital games next to my 2-10 physical games each month.
Guacamelee 2 on Switch, let's go!
I own the first one on Wii U, though I got it through the Humble Bundle so I have no problem buying it on Switch.
The first is very good. Somehow difficult but you can beat it. I don't know for the sequel though..
@NintendoFan4Lyf Totally agree. I've bought this game on Wii U after thoroughly playing the original version on Steam. I love it but I can't justify triple-dipping. I'm psyched for the sequel, however. I didn't buy it when it came out on Steam in hopes that Drinkbox would bring it to Switch eventually. So glad to hear that it's on its way!
this is definitely a YES!!
I found one part off the game to hard in G1. Probably about 80% in. In the future I will restart the game on the PS Vita. If I manager to complete it, I will look into G2 on the switch.
@jswhitfield8 I'm all in, but what would be a better word to describe them?
Supposedly this version is better than Guacamelee! Gold, which I own on PC. Might get this on Switch during a sale. Definitely getting the sequel.
@jswhitfield8 It also kinda doesn't roll off the tongue as easily.
Awesome! Cant wait to play the new one, may replay the first one in the meantime
Gucamelee was probably my favorite indie on Wii U, so I'm definitely picking up 2. What a nice surprise.
And.... this is exactly why I didn’t pre-order Guacamelee 2 on the PS4!
Now Switch Owners can enjoy Meme Run too.
I really enjoyed the first one. This will be a definite purchase!
@RupeeClock a physical release would be terrific.
Played it on wiiu, very good game.

But yeah, making this list, I realised how a ton is already available on Switch as well.
I played the first Guacamelee up unitl the last boss battle and turned around to get hidden collectibles (I never did).
Great game, but the combat system wasn't what I wanted. Too many shielded enemies forcing you to use specific moves and it didn't really feel like wrestling (not enough tackling/grappling/throwing enemies, just your standard punching and kicking).
Still, pretty fun.
How small is the game (less than 10h?) And is it enjoyable as a single player or it is it co-op heavy?
@16bitdave you just want more, don'tcha?
@Webheadd yes
Great news. The first one was great, so I also want the second one.
