Red Barrels' first-person horror games Outlast and Outlast 2 will be released in physical form on the Switch - with pre-orders opening on 26th October. Physical game specialist Limited Run made the shocking announcement on its Twitter and also revealed two exclusive pieces of art it had commissioned:
For anyone who hasn't played the scary series before, the first game unfolds in the claustrophobic confines of Mount Massive Asylum while the second game takes place out in the Supai region of Arizona. If you're not a fan of the horror genre, these games are not advisable due to the graphic content. Both titles were originally released on the Switch eShop earlier this year.

Really excited for this. Loved reviewing them both earlier this year.
Awesome!🙌
Excited to see them come as Physical from LRG. Won't play much but definite collection to have.
Cool
I don't know if its an age thing or what but these kind of games don't appeal to me like they once did. I am not against violence or horror in games but it all seems a bit much to me these days.
Been waiting on this so definitely gonna look to pick one up, though this last part of the year is really doing damage to my wallet with all these amazing games coming.
Nice. I had just recently removed these from my backlog too.
This one cart? Two carts but one price? Two games released same day?
LRG have started to milk it....
If it’s separated they have taken in to next level.
Super Rare games have the release schedule right IMO. LRG are pushing it at this point
I wish LRG would chill with the releases at this point. I wanted to collect all of em, but with the amount and quality they’re releasing I gave up. SRG has the release schedule how it should be. LRG is just getting money hungry imo
I was a cinch for Layers of Fear till i realized there’s no standard $30 version 😡 that I can see
Once again coming down to price. 29.99? DEFINITELY BUYING. 39.99? Will depend on my mood at the time.
These are really good games though, especially around Halloween!
I hope the release scedule wont get worse like it did for the psVita. 3 each month is more then enough! Had to give up on Vita, could not keep up after 50+ Vita games and also keep up with switch. So i choose to keep the switch collection complete.
I'd love to see them combined, but there doesn't seem to be word on whether it's two separate releases or not. Also, very IMPORT-antly (see what I did there?), I'd like to know if that's exclusive rights to release it physically, or if Europe could still get its own physical release. Much as I'm happy to have waited for a physical release, I'm NOT going to pay half-across-the-globe-shipping AND absolutely ridiculous import taxes because SOMEONE SOMEWHERE decided to open my parcel and charge me a ludicrous amount for it, definitely not TWICE. Not even taking the risk.
That is nice! I will add them to my list!
LRG ordered separate coverarts for these games and the way things are stated pretty much guarantees these will be individual releases, probably around $30 each.
I'd love to play these games but I'm such a sissy I couldn't handle it. I'm like seriously bad! Can't handle tense games in the dark with jump scares etc. I wish I could but I just can't.
This really pisses me off all these digital games that get a physical release six months to a year later after being released on eshop. I’ve stopped buying anything digital now for this reason just in case a physical copy happens it’s so annoying.
@sandman89 FFXV Pocket Edition HD Physical Release for all platforms!
I just started Outlast 2 the other day,really enjoying it. The part in the cornfield will live long in the memory. I was surprised by how good it all looks, definitely up there as one of the Switch's best looking games.
Now I wish I had not bought them both digitally, I would have just waited for this.
Excellent. I love this series and I hope to add this physical set to my collection.
@Katelyn1223 they are a business though, they work with indie companies to distribute physical copies, why space themselves out and make less money at the same time?
@Stocksy Most likely two separate releases on two separate carts. Looking at the file sizes, they technically COULD put both of them on a 16GB cart (5.7GB + 9.6GB = 15.3GB), but it wouldn't surprise me if they just release them separately... Hoping I'm wrong but won't get my hopes up...
@sandman89 well if you want to buy the physical version at scalper prices then be my guest, even the inflated eshop prices are better than what these will cost, it's ridiculous that physical a consumer choice has been reduced to this on switch.
it doesn't effect me much though as i only go for first party titles on switch anyway.
I'll never understand why Limited Run release so many games with such frequency. It is possible to have purchased and paid for 20+ Limited Run releases at the moment and yet you will still be waiting for all of them for three months or more. So you will probably miss out on genuinely quality normal retail releases since all your funds are tied up in Limited Run games. And when you do get around to picking up the normal retail releases that you have missed out on, you find that they are now Limited Run prices on ebay. It's lose/lose. I too much prefer the release schedule of super rare and I also appreciate the quality and uniqueness of their releases. I really don't appreciate that kind of US Hipster-irony when it comes to releasing (it's so crap it's good) Night-Trap for the tenth time. Super-rare releases are much more cerebal.
It's sad that the quest to become or maintain being middle class is looked on as being "money hungry" these days. Like, I don't think any employee at Limited Run Games are out there buying yachts off the sales of Golf Story or Saturday Morning RPG. They're probably spending their money trying to afford their kids dental plans or something. If they make a lot of games you aren't obligated to buy them all. Don't blame them for you being an apex consumer. You're allowed to NOT own a couple games.
@VinylCreep
Why do they number their releases then and always talk about people maintaining their run? They know exactly what mindset they are exploiting. P.S. I doubt they aspire to be Middle-Class or Bourgeois, that has always been un-cool. I think they fancy themselves as failed rockstars or something. The point is, Limited Run put out too many games. The proof is in the current lead times. I waited months for Thimbleweed Park, similarly I received notification that my Tribute Treasure Box was shipped only 3 days ago. I think I have been waiting about 3 months for that, (or at least it has felt like that). And those were releases 1-2-3. And what number release are we currently up to?
I got the trinity for my Xbox a month ago brand new for £9 so I have no interest in this unless it's under a tenner lol
Played on Steam for 10 minutes... Had to turn it off... Too damn scary!
@FarkyValentine
Hmm... that bad huh...
I'm not a fan of Evil horror. I like RE Revelations style horror, but not Evil Within or Fatal Frame type horror. Sounds like this is the latter.
@bluemage1989 I am also an 89 baby, and I feel ya, I like more happy thoughts. But I still love horror with a passion, excited for Halloween and everything. I just play in shorter bouts. Haha
@AUMWolf you know sometimes I think the genre is just becoming less and less about horror and more about who can be more sadistic and while I haven't played these games or many horror games in quite some time this is the trend I see. A good example for me is i have really enjoyed the Resident Evil series over the years but Resi 7 just didn't do it for me. It's funny you know I've always enjoyed mature titles but the Switch and its cheerful library of games has especially captured me this generation.
@bluemage1989 I agree when it's blatantly over the top for shock value, I feel the horror movies especially have done that over recent years, I can't stand it. However I enjoyed RE7 but to each there own, also out last is actually pretty good, actually has an interesting back story. And yes! Been playing some Mario party to cleanse my pallette! Though dark souls end of this month will bring me back to the dark side, but that's more dark fantasy.
not quite sure, but it wasn't quite clear or I may have missed it, but will they both be on one cart or two sold separately ???
@JaxonH I personally don't find it scary. You get the odd jump scare but the Outlast games are more about tension and they do it very well. The subject and theme in 2 though is pretty brutal. You're chased by 2 religious sects, one god worshipping, one devil worshipping. Some real nasty stuff in there. As scary games go though Layers of Fear beats it, that done horror remarkably well without the need for any gore, violence or pushing the boundaries of acceptability. That game totally had my skin crawling but it was so well done I craved more. Never had that feeling from a game before. Outlast 1 or 2 haven't really given me that same feeling, they're a different experience.
I have to say though Outlast 2 looks so good,the graphics are amazing for a Switch title. In my opinion it looks better than Doom.
This release is currently listed on their upcoming games calendar as "TBA 2 game collection," so it should be a single purchase, one cart or two.
Keep em rolling limited run
@Shambo LRG pays import duties for you. So it will be only Game + Shipping costs. Since I was made aware of that, I am in all the way
I love these games, but if I had to chose only one, I would stick to the first one, even when part II looks a bit better. The setting of part I is what does it for me.
Still I share the same frustration as others pointed out as well. Early adopting digital only releases seems to lead to punishment. Red Barrels even made it clear they were not considering a physical release at all. Now it will be double dipping again... Sonic Mania... Outlast 1&2... Golf Story... Thimbleweed... Rocket League (even another physical release)...
Developers should make it possible to sell back digital games as soon as you also have them physical.
Only came in here to see the over top reply from Anti matter, about how gore and violence are really evil, yet in the same comment stating how much he wants to lick every male in the game.... will check again later ….
The only other game that gave me the willies was Silent Hill PS the original to scare the piss out of me. Watching was alot different then the experiences of playing it.
Oh my. I may be quadruple dipping. For Outlast 1 anyway, only own Outlast 2 on PS4. But the first, I got free on Plus, then on Xbox One, then on Switch. Now a double dip on Switch. It'll be a relief on my SD card though.
@617Sqn Outlast 2 would be his absolute worst nightmare.
@AUMWolf ah the oppressive world of Dark Souls love the series hope you enjoy it. I don't doubt they have done well written lore as graphically there attention to detail is impressive clearly very talented its like others said above though about elements of Outlast 2 being in bad taste that makes me uncomfortable with playing but I'm glad its on Switch and that everyone can enjoy it. Would love to see a Resi collection on Switch would struggle to pick a favourite from its series including the various spin offs and remakes its just that great a series I'm even in the minority that really loved Resi 6.
@sandman89
I had that problem with Wii U. Now I simply refuse to purchase anything digitally. It's also a lost purchase since it's an impalpable, temporary license anyway.
