Fortnite is getting its very own physical, retail edition thanks to a partnership between developer Epic Games and Warner Bros. Interactive. The bundle will be available on Switch and other consoles later this year.
Called Fortnite: Deep Freeze Bundle, this new retail edition will include the standard, free-to-play Fortnite Battle Royale game, as well as premium content including the Frostbite Outfit, Cold Front Glider, Chill-Axe Pickaxe, Freezing Point Back Bling, and 1,000 V-Bucks which can be used to purchase in-game items.
The game itself will naturally be the very same game available for free directly from the eShop, with the cost covering the extra items that are supplied alongside the game. This new bundle isn't exclusive to retail stores, however, as players will also be able to purchase and download the content digitally from the eShop or Nintendo's websites.

The bundle launches for Switch, Xbox One, and PS4 on 16th November and will be available for £24.99 / $29.99, securing the extra shelf space and visibility in stores that it (definitely doesn't) need.
Are you thinking about joining in with the Fortnite craze? Will you be grabbing a copy of this bundle to get stuck in? Let us know with a comment.

Fun game, but physical is a step backwards.
Aw man, how many dumb parents are gonna buy this for their kids?
Shame its still just the crummy Battle Royale. I want the proper Fortnite dangit.
No. Just no
I don’t understand why this game is popular.
How much does it cost to buy this bundle digitally?
sigh
And my kids will ask for it.
They ask for vbucks for some stupid skin or whatnot EVERY DAY.
"Does it make you more competitive?"
"No...?"
"Then NO!"
(I remember back in UT99 when you could download whatever skin you wanted, and if you couldn't find it, the tools were free to make your own!)
As much as I love a physical game, this is just sad. Paying $30 for a free-to-play game?
Although I couldn't care less about the game itself, considering the current price of original Fortnite physical editions, I'm tempted by this edition for the collecting value.
I was all getting excited by the title, thinking they finally were releasing the PVE game mode of Fortnite on the Switch.... only to be disappointed by a physical cash grab. /shrug
Wow thats really really bad. It's a FREE to play game. How on earth can you justify charging for it, it's not even like its offering an offline version, it's literally just the same thing as it is on the digital stores.
@Nater I do love the idea that if it did make them more competitive, you'd help them out with V-Bucks.
I guess something cool about this is...I dunno, if this is more than like a digital keyfob to play, there's some code of this game written as physical for preservation and, I guess if parents wanted to "punish" their kids for bad grades (but not have to hide the family Switch), they could just take away the cartridge. Of course, the kid could redownload for free...
@Nater - True, but you can blame the ever-expandong technology race and making development more expensive where nickel and diming for every little pedantic thing is a way to make money.
And in its success others capitalized.
So, why wasn't this in the switch fortnite bundle? Also what's the point. This game gets updated all the time which makes the cartridge close to useless, or it will after a few months of updates. This is just a cash grab.
Why???
Its a free game!!!
A £30 physical copy is really stupid.
Someone's grandma is going to see that, and it will be the last gift they give to their grandkids before shucking the mortal coil.
Fortnite... for posterity.
Considering it's an "online-only" game anyway, that will still to be updated every other week, it's the one game I think didn't need any form of physical release. When it's been updated like 20 more times, you'll have pretty much the whole size of the game on the cartridge taken up on your system memory anyway.
The bundle looks pretty cool to be fair and I could see how people would appreciate this as a gift. Got excited thinking STW was coming to switch for a second tho
I'm conflicted since I love to collect physical editions of indie/retro eShop games... Maybe I can justify it if I start playing with my niece on a regular basis; it feels like a scam though.
This is like buying CDs of free to download software from Geek Squad.
I'm all for supporting physical releases though, but given the online nature of this game this is an odd move.
"Eh, what's up doc? Can I get the ehh... Fortnite Borger?"
"Eh, what's up doc? Can I get the ehh... Fortnite Borger?"
y tho?
I’d go for it if it had the original campaign
april 1st what a classic gag nintendo life great one what its the 9th of October seriously the gaming world has gone fffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff mad.
Seems like the old expansion packs for pc. Put the game in to install the extras and then never use it again, Cant wait to see it pre owned as all the dlc would be redeemed so will only be worth getting if you collect physical
In a world with too much plastic we're creating plastic boxes and cartridges for a game that won't work once the servers get turned off (a year or two after the world finds a new craze). And on top of that it will cost £25 for an otherwise free to play game? Madness!
No unlimited battle passes? Not even one? Just items and not even all of them? I'm seriously baffled.
I was hoping for a complete edition, not just winter-themed items.
If they add SAVE THE WORLD to the switch with this 30$ game then maybe that would be a great price with Save the world, and deep freeze items. But it's not worth it if it's just battle royal and items+V BUCKS. On the original game one skin goes to about like 20 dollars.
Remember the good ol days where you had to take time to unlock something or do something to unlocked a character or something in your game. Now you have to pay for those as DLC its dumb.
They just want more money
To those naysayers your in minority overall. I will gladly pay for physical if it includes what they are asking. This is one game I will collect just for that reason. I didn't have to pay for the first one so paying this one isn't going to cramp my gaming nights.
I actually played this for once yesterday on Switch, and my squad was all 11 year olds who were being relentless with the insults pretty quick. Making fun of my name and for being last alive, the usual fare. Fortnite isn't my cup of tea though Blackout was loads of fun. Wished that was coming to Switch
@Audigore0733
>> Remember the good ol days where you had to take time to unlock something or do something to unlocked a character or something in your game.
But there's plenty of skins, gliders, emotes, etc. that are exclusive to each Battle Pass season. So it's the best of both worlds. Plenty of things you can only earn and plenty you can only buy. Or not spend a penny and enjoy the basic game.
@Pichuka97
That stinks! Try it without voice chat. I rarely use it on PC and never on Switch.
@Jturner22 I know but on the whole, it is amusing, even when you get right in there and start dishing it back
This isn't much different than the physical release of Rocket League on Switch. From a collector's point of view, it's nice just to have the box on the shelf. Although I hope this means that the "save the world" mode will be available and playable offline. But I don't think that'll be the case.
I don't see much difference between paying $30 for a physical version of a free-to-play game and paying $40 for a physical version of a $10 downloadable game, to be perfectly honest. Neither is for me.
@Ryancraddock
A little while ago, I challenged you to go a full month without fanboy plugging Fortnite down our throats.
You made it a week.
Stop. It’s a subpar, overhyped, fidget spinner of a game.
Seriously, how much is Epic paying you to talk about it nonstop?
FULL SPEED AHEAD FOLKS, THERE AIN'T NO BRAKES ON THIS HERE MONEYTRAIN. CHOO CHOO, OPEN THE FLOOD GATES.
Yeah, no, normally I'm all for physical editions of things, but this is a free-to-play title. It's not supposed to be physical. Heck, there's not really any point in it either. Sure it's available digitally, but still, this is just scummy.
@Ryzaerian Probably as much as they're paying the rest of the Fortnite crew. Zilch.
You know, with Fortnite, I wouldn't be surprised if people would pay to praise it.
Sadly it doesn't look like this garbage game is going away anytime soon, and battle royale seems to be staying as well... Sigh.
@justin233
If I was to take a guess, it's most likely due to how well it plays, fluid animations, constantly being added to, no loot-boxes and fairly good progression rewards. Plus it was one of the first Battle Royal games made after PubG popularized the genre.
I personally don't like BR games in general, but respect what Epic Games did with it.
EDIT: Forgot to give my 2 cents on the topic at hand. I think it's kinda dumb to have a physical copy of a free-to-play game. The only thing that would make it "ok-ish" for me, is if you play off the physical copy instead of digitally downloading it like you would now with Fortnite. /EDIT
My little boy is 2 and I've already got him playing Mario Odyssey and Little Big Planet. Until he's quite a lot older he's not gonna know multiplayer games exist because even if he does like multiplayer games one day I 100% want a kid that loves finely crafted single player games like his old man.
Also, buying a physical game that one day very soon (as in like a month) won't work is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard
@Ryzaerian Seriously, when will people understand that this is one of the biggest games in the world at present and a major part of Nintendo's current console (including Nintendo's own promotional campaigns)?
Just because you don't like it, doesn't mean there aren't countless readers who play the game on Switch and are interested in these articles. If you don't like Fortnite, you're more than welcome to ignore any article discussing it.
I am the largest advocate for physical copies of games in the world probably, but in this case, it is an online game, can't be played offline anyway,
I can't stand getting online with my Switch, for any reason, so I prefer games that don't require access, but in this case, wouldn't it be a waste ???
I mean because of it's limitation, for this reason, trying to resell a used fortnight cart would get you squat, even at GameStop, I mean the restriction of Mario Party not being usable in handheld mode, is moot, it would still keep it's used value because it can still be used by single players AND played offline, but with fortnight, it is multiplayer online only, so those who do get it are restricted and having a used copy, they will try to charge you $3 less for, but unlike most other used games, they will probably offer half of what they offer other games of same age & popularity
there's really no point in having it physical
@ryancraddock
It’s a severely overhyped, trash game popularized by 5th graders on smartphones.
Far better games are overlooked and neglected because people like yourself keep shoving it up our collective you-know-what. You, in particular, appear to have an obsession on the subject. It’s shoddy journalism.
If you don’t like my opinion, you’re welcome to ignore it.
As pricey as it is, I imagine this will look great on collectors' shelves.
Odd choise
@Nukuleardawg not only that but this will be pointless used and would be worthless to sell too.
@jcvandan yep, in the future these will be a very expensive drinks coaster, like most online only games released physically these days.
@123akis I don’t know the cost of this exact set but $30 seems fair for what your getting. Skins can cost $10-$20, 1,000 v-bucks is $10, gliders can be $8-$15, & pick axes can be $5-$10. So even if you estimate the items on the lower end, $30 is still pretty standard pricing.
@Ryzaerian “popularized by 5th graders on smartphones”... huh?
This games was out on PC & consoles waaay before releasing on iOS and just recently released on Android. It 100% was NOT popularized on smart phones. By the time it was released on mobile it was already a world wide hit. I’m not some huge Fortnite guy, I only started to play because my kids like the game & I like to game with them. If it wasn’t free, I probably would have skipped it. That being said, you assessment of the game is waaaay off.
@Supadav03
My assessment was two paragraphs. You focused entirely on the first sentence.
Platform demographics aside, it’s still overhyped trash. The entire BR genre is, in my opinion, vastly inferior to other (tdm, ctf, respawn-based objective) multiplayer modes, and virtually all other games that cater to competitive multiplayer.
Fortnite’s popularity is that of the fidget spinner. It -is- popular, but truthfully doesn’t deserve to be. And while marketing plays a significant factor, part of the blame lays squarely in the lap of purchased, myopic media. And Ryan’s weekly odes to Fortnite reek of blatant sycophantism.
Vanilla Ice sold a lot of units too. That doesn’t mean he made quality music. And Fortnite is the current Vanilla Ice of the video game industry.
We don’t need a Fortnite article every week. To be honest, we don’t need any.
Yes, that’s my opinion. That’s what comments are for, aren’t they?
Like has already been said, this is meant to pray on parents and grandparents who don't know much about video games. Their young kids or grandkids will ask for it and get it, and Epic will laugh all the way to the bank!
Sorry but no, as much as I prefer physical copies of games, spending cash for a physical copy of a free to play game is beyond dumb. It's insulting and like has been said, meant to prey on people who don't know better.
@Ryzaerian only focused on that line because it seemed like the basis for your “over hyped trash” arguement since it was a direct correlation.
I have a few friends that won’t touch the game with a 10 foot poll, so I hardly think you stand alone with your opinion.
As far as it deserving to be popular, everyone gets their opinion on that and I can’t arfue with your opinion. Just took exception to that first statement since it was so blatantly false. Your totally entitled (and maybe even right) with the rest of it.
PS: sorry had to add this, as a guy who was about 10 when Vanilla Ice was big, I actually liked his music. Guess that gives you an idea of my taste level.
@Supadav03 Lol, don’t feel bad, I think every 10 year-old liked his music at the time. But I feel like that proves my point. 😁
the best part is that it has no USED resale value
For $30 I might just get this because I like physical games, but probably not lol. Buying a physical game I can't resell defeats half the purpose.
I hear there's another free game coming to shelves.

... what? It even got rave reviews over at MetaMetaCritic!
@Heavyarms55 Personally, I would have no problems paying for a free to play game. Cave Story, Battle for Wesnoth, or even possible even the original Fortnite single player mode. What seems ridiculous to me, is paying for a free game that is also 100% online only. The biggest perk to me buying physical games is knowing that they are a part of my collection and will be playing 20 years from now. I don't know why you would want a physical copy of a free to play, online only game though.
@roadrunner343 Cave Story was free?
@Heavyarms55 It's available for free on PC, and has been for quite some time. Not Cave Story+ mind you, so that may be a bad example... but in a world where Cave Story+ didn't exist, I would purchase the original on a cart.
Still, the only real point I was trying to make is that I can see the appeal in purchasing physical versions of free games, given the correct type of game. I won't be rushing out to buy physical versions of Fortnite, League of Legends, or Candy Crush anytime soon though.
@roadrunner343 I guess I could see that. And I didn't know there was a difference with Cave Story. I always just assumed the + was something related to the story somehow, since I haven't played it.
Its title is "Fortnite". How is that not proper?
@XenoShaun
"Shame its still just the crummy Battle Royale. I want the proper Fortnite dangit."
This is going to be a Christmas best seller. It’s going to be great for parents who are a bit risky in putting their credit card information to get V-Bucks.
@Nater "Welcome to the new age
to the new age
welcome to the new age
to the new age..."
@Ryzaerian Wow...
I don't know whether I like this or not...
I think that it's for giving the game more visibility, which is not really necessary. People ask why they make a paid physical edition but if you count the included items and v-bucks is more generous than buying this stuff separately. Yes, the game is free to play, but this bundle includes DLC and the DLC is 100% of this business. So if you think this is outrageous then I think you don't know anything about Fortnite. This physical release is all about the DLC, the v-bucks and the box, the first Fortnite real box.
@jhewitt3476 The cartridge will become dated quickly, this game is being updated with new/different content all the time. This is just for having a box, which some people love, DLC and v-bucks for more DLC. It's like a digital bundle with a free box included.
If there was a complete offline story mode on this game card that would be worth it. As of right now, with this game being Battle Royale only on the Switch, a physical copy is a waste of money.
@PLAYwithGregg PS4 was physical and is now highly collectible due to it's small print run.
@BlueOcean ??? Updates are obviously loaded on your system not your card ha ha
ITS A TRAP!
@YANDMAN ??? I didn't say that updates are saved to the cartridge. Read before you reply.
@BlueOcean O.k so what did you mean by 'The cartridge will become quickly dated' then?
@YANDMAN The cartridge is worthless on its own, the game needs to be updated to latest version to play, that's what I said "The cartridge will become dated quickly". Basically the whole game is updated every season which last around two months.
The real value of this bundle is the DLC, the 10 v-bucks and the physical box and that's why I think that it's not expensive although the cartridge is pretty useless. I wouldn't be surprised if no cartridge was included.
@BlueOcean It's totally irrelevant. Whether you put the base game on your system via a cartridge or via the online download all the updates that change it are exactly that..Updates, and that is exactly the point i made from the start. Going by your reasoning if you can call it that the cartridge is out of date the second it is produced, but it still makes no difference as it only acts as an access. The game is online and so are all the updates.
@YANDMAN I really don't know what you are arguing about...
It seems like a good deal to me. Everyone has an opinion. The skin, glider, pickaxe are items that typically cost upward of $25.00, then add in the 1000 v-bucks ($10.00), essentially making the physical copy a free gift, or a Thank you gift for making your purchase. something that should happen more often.
@subpopz You're missing the point of the conversation, or the reason he positioned the cosmetic stuff that way to his kid. I don't think either of us think P2W games are ok.
