Physical editions of the critically acclaimed Dead Cells have launched today, bringing with them another chance to pre-order the super fancy Signature Edition bundle.
If you're not up to speed on this recent roguelike/Metroidvania hit, Dead Cells is an addictive, difficult, and fun little title which we described as "a masterclass in excellent roguelike design" in our review. If you've been waiting to get your hands on the promised physical version, or if you're only just hearing about the game for the first time, then these lovely options may well be for you.
The Signature Edition, which you can see in the image above, has already seen its initial shipment sell out. A second wave of pre-orders are now being taken, however, allowing you get your hands on a copy after all. The bundle costs £40 and is available from Signature Edition Games. Here's everything that's included:
- A region free 'Dead Cells' Game
- A double-CD digipak soundtrack
- An exclusive enamel character pin
- A fifty-six-page hardback artbook
- A certificate of authenticity featuring the autographs of the developers, Motion Twin
- An outer box featuring exclusive artwork in a matt finish with spot gloss
If giant bundles of goodness aren't your thing, or if you're looking to save a bit of cash, a standard physical edition is also available for £30. Both this, and the Signature Edition, are expected to be shipped by the end of September.

I'm in. I'm 100% digital, but I am obsessed with this game & want all the goodies
Add a signed photo of Philip and I'm in!
This is tempting... too much tempting...
What is the official release for physical on this game cos Argos have it listed for today but it won’t let me buy the game
Superb game! Just finished playing it as it happens. It's tough going though!
Cool! Might buy the standard edition eventually. The game looks really good.
Wonder if a certain ex-IGN writer has this preordered?
(Too soon?)
@Quarth I wonder if he even played it, since he can’t seem to make his own opinion up about it. (Or about much of anything, it seems...)
@imgrowinglegs Yeah, it's a sad story overall.
Well...it's not much pricier than the standard edition and I've had my eye on it anyway, so I might get it. Physical soundtracks and artbooks are my thing.
Interested, but just bought Octopath Traveler. With how many hours that takes to beat, I'll be ready for this game around Christmas time
want the game cart n a box minus the goodies or my kids would just trash any extras and good for them or I would be a plastic hoarder
The 'roguelike' kept me away.
I contacted signature games and asked if this second wave was a part of the initial run of 2000. It was not, and therefore you dont get the certificate of authenticity with the signatures. Just be aware. Still an awesome game and limited edition.
Would have loved this. Unfortunately I picked up the game 3 hours ago and don't feel like buying it twice.
No managed to pick this up yet. It looks pretty good.
@hatch
Yes buy. I dont like any roguelike games. Its usually a dealbreaker.
But I cant stop playing this game. Incredible gameplay, and enough permanent abillities to keep me coming back for one more run. You wont regret it.
Between this and hollow knight. Easily 100 hours. Love them both
@hatch
I’m the same way, went ahead and purchased it, love it oddly enough
@hatch Which roguelikes/roguelites have you tried and disliked? Maybe that would give us a better idea of whether you’d like Dead Cells
Personally, I enjoy roguelites, and Dead Cells has been a favorite of mine since early access. With that said, I respect that lots of gamers are not into the rogue-X thing. No judgmemt at all. In my case, I think I’m conditioned to accept short games & frequent failure because I grew up on early arcade games, Atari 2600, and Colecovision.
My best guess is, if you enjoyed something like Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow on DS, you’d probably enjoy Dead Cells. Very fluid action & lots of weapons/combinations to collect and experiment with. Granted, you will have to re-start often, but there is some sense of progress in the form of a larger pool of available weapons, and a few permanent skill upgrades.
Hard to say whether the frequent re-starts would outweigh the attraction of the core gameplay in your case. FWIW, there are some (unlockable) level choices in the early stages that add some variety, beyond the procedural level generation and weapon variety, which keep the action a bit fresher than you might expect.
I will be waiting for the physical copy of this. I want to be able to touch what I own, or even eat Dead Cells, if I ever happen to get stuck on an Island somewhere and have nothing else left for food.
@hatch if you like Hollow Knight, you will probably like Dead Cells, maybe even more. It's a lot like original Metroid and Castlevania too. If you die, you get to keep any upgrades and secret areas you discovered along the way.
Ordered, this game looks great.
I already received shipping confirmation yesterday. Looking forward to it!
@setezerocinco It shouldn't. I would normally agree, but the gameplay loop is satisfying. You are right back in the game after dying.
@geox30 He would probably just forge his own signature.
Disclaimer: I made a lighthearted joke above, but I don't condone any of the harassment that has come Filip's way; what those people are doing is far worse than his plagiarism. I would be highly upset if someone copied my work, but swarms of thousands of hateful messages is enough to break a person. That's not to excuse what he did, but being fired and likely having no further shot in the industry is just punishment enough. It's a shame, as I was really starting to warm up to him on NVC.
@hatch As much as I love Dead Cells - if you felt there was insufficient progression to hold your interest in Rogue Legacy and Enter the Gungeon, I’m afraid you might have similar feeling about the loop in Dead Cells. The progression in a Dead Cells, after the first several hours, is vaguely comparable to that of EtG, in my experience. Progress largely hinges on earning and investing Cells, which occasionally pop from enemies. X amount of Cells unlocks a new weapon or ability (it varies). There are some other kinds f unlocks as well (weapon/ability blueprints, and a few runes for permanent abilities), but most progress is tied to cells. For some items, dozens of Cells and multiple runs are required - it varies.
I got it thanks guys I missed it the first time. I thought about going digital and waiting until November when the patch for performance improvements drops but I figured why not just get this beautiful physical bundle.
@Not_Soos I'm glad to see one of the few people to say something like this. I understand people aren't happy about the plagarism, however, in the scale of things it isn't worth the harrassment directed at him, and it's quite a sad story overall. His career is literally in pieces, and people seem to forget the person (he has a wife and child I believe) so it must be awful for them to see the abuse he is receiving. Off topic I suppose, but good to see not everyone has adopted the mob mentality.
@Wraggadam1 Thought about including that in my initial comment, but yeah, he's absolutely the father of a young boy. Not sure if he's married. I had been watching him since his debut on NVC and he was very timid and backwards at first, but he greatly improved over the span of a couple months. As someone who has grappled with a lot of social anxiety myself, I really sympathized with him. Again, I'm not excusing what he did, but as you said, Filip is very much a person with human feelings. I don't understand how people can have such a complete lack of compassion.
Edit: Not to put the fault on IGN, but from the beginning I thought it was a bit odd they apparently reached out to Filip about an open position rather than him first applying. If they wanted him that badly, I doubt they were too interested in extensive background checks.
@Not_Soos unfortunately we live in a world where the iternet mob rules, and can hide behind screens and forget about feelings.
What I find stranger still is that what Filip has done has been going on for so long, and really, this isn't an isolated issue. I read a lot of film and game reviews, and there have been so many times where I've gone between review just to see if it's the same Author, as the structure and style of the review have been so similar, that it was practically a cut and paste job. Filip certainly isn't the first, just the first to be caught out like this (not suggesting I have seen this on here, but have definitely seen this on other websites in the past).
Is this article plagiarized?
@Not_Soos I think it’s because Filip himself shows little compassion. Rather than apologize to Boomstick Gaming he practically talk down to him and was essentially saying “you’re welcome for the exposure” while still vehemently denying something he was found guilty of. Not only that, but this wasn’t even an isolated incident. He very much deserves ridicule.
@NIN10DOXD it's about taking the higher ground. Particularly on the internet. Literally thousands of people harrasing one person, that has done something that has very little impact on them is horrific behaviour. We should behave on the internet how we would behave in real life.
To put it in perspective, if this had happened in a national newspaper, and there was no internet, would you think it okay to send hatemail, shout at him in the street, or travel with your pitchforks to the front door to give him the ridicule he so deserves?
@Wraggadam1 It’s not like anybody is condoning violence or pressuring him into self harm. He has been outed as a manipulative and egotistical person. It was his own doing. The jokes would’ve died by now if this wasn’t so exstensive and he were more conscientious when it came to his response.
@NIN10DOXD you don't have to ourltright say it to cause that pressure. Someone could quite easily be led to self harm or worse due to the overwhelming public pressures. It's bad enough him losing his job, and his career in journalism (deservedly) being finished. It isn't okay to harrass (hundreds of copied and pasted Twitter and YouTube comments, websites linking to articles he has copied etc, constant YouTube videos picking apart everything he's said and done, and even worse, his employer and colleagues quite unprofessionally calling him out on twitter, rather than respectfully stating that the issue is been dealt with - it's like if you lost your job, and your employer went on Twitter to shout about it and call you names). Yes, his apology wasn't great, but all people have to do is ignore it, and it they don't like it, unsubscribe.
@Wraggadam1 As someone who has dealt with mental illness, I can assure you that’s not going to be a problem Filip. It’s going to die out anyway and he will probably find a job in some other industry unless he breaks the law there too.
