After what feels like forever, the king of the Kremlings is finally coming to Super Smash Bros. Following King K. Rool being officially revealed for the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate cast, Rare employee Gregg Mayles tweeted he perhaps should have taken more than five minutes to come up with the “slightly rubbish name” when he was originally working on the character for Donkey Kong Country. When asked what the “K” stood for, he said it was nothing more than a way of making the villain seem important and to inflate his ego.
Continuing the celebration of King K. Rool joining the Ultimate roster, Mayles posted a bonus tweet - showing an early naming sheet from 1994 labelling K. Rool as the “Kommander” and also revealing Donkey Kong Country was originally titled Monkey Mayhem. There are plenty of other interesting character names on display as well.
Are you excited K. Rool is finally being added to the Super Smash Bros. cast? Do you like the name King K. Rool and Donkey Kong Country, or would you have preferred the original names? Tell us in the comments below.

Eh, I like the final names better. Makes them stand out more, in my opinion.
Kommander comes aboard!
So glad the Monkey Mayhem series is getting another rep!
I love King K. Rool's name. I really hope they bring him back for a third DKC Returns game (or even better - a new 3D DK game) now that he has gained back some popularity.
King Kommander Rool is more like it.
Kommander K. Rool would actually be a neat concept for a one of the King's costumes like Kaptain K. Rool. I now want to see him dressed in a military commander costume.
Mayles said in his replies that the K could potentially stand for anything, specifically listing a purposefully normal name, like Keith.
King Keith Rool is now my headcanon.
Kommander Roo... it's Crocodile Dundee.
@N00BiSH Your profile pic is on point
Hooter? ..... glad it wasnt used. Lol.
Well seems like the fake credit isn't so fake after all then.
@Retron Exactly what I always assumed too. I thought that was the obvious conclusion to draw from the name myself. That way there's Rule and Cruel in the one name.
King K. Rool... King Cruel.
@Retron isn’t that a type of doughnut? A cruller?
I don't think Funky was ever cool and/or hip.
In the next donkey kong games he will be like a bowser to mario. I would love that.
Eternal nemesis of DK
It's even better in polish, where 'King' is translated to 'Król', which is read more or less like 'Cruel'.
Good thing that nintendo doesjn't translate it's games for the polish market, because 'Król K. Rool' would be going a bit overboard
@justin233
This I am also eagerly waiting for.
@justin233 there has to be something in the works. DKC has sold so well for Nintendo and Odyssey has sold really well (best selling game on the system which surprised me!) for the 'dead' genre of 3D platformers.
LOL at the Owl Animal Buddy named Hooter. I wish they could've used that one.
Another scraped one:
(Eeny meeny) miney mole.
I love these puns! ^-^
they need Wart now
Mr. Hister is still such a great name.
I agree on the pun of K. Rool to be "Cruel". Interestingly enough, as the ruler of the Kremlings, the K can easily stand for "Kremling", or perhaps just "Krem" since we also have "Kremkroc" industries that plays off of it. It even seems like a very loose tongue in cheek nod to the alias of another reptilian "King K", King Koopa. Conjecture, but fun nonetheless
To me it was always "Kremling" it's what makes most sense, i guess...
I like K. Rool's name. Behind the scenes stuff like this, is always interesting to see.
@HappyRusevDay
Yes. Krueller.
@Bolt_Strike. An owl Animal Buddy would have been cute. Maybe they felt that would have been too many birds with Espresso, 2 Squawks and Parry?
@Pod. It is. But it wouldn't have gelled with his level. Rattle Battle is great!
No complaints from this corner if K. Rool comes back in another DKC game.
@N00BiSH I love your profile picture! 😂😂
Nice. I would also love to know why King Rool has a hard-golden belly. A reason for that?
