As Switch games continue to top the charts, it comes as no surprise The NPD Group is reporting Nintendo's hybrid system is also the best-selling hardware platform for the month of July. NPD's games industry analyst Mat Piscatella explained how the Switch had been at the forefront of hardware sales on seven occasions:
Nintendo Switch was July’s best-selling hardware platform in both dollars and units sold...This is the seventh month that Switch has led in hardware dollar sales since launching in March 2017, and the first since December 2017.
Hardware spending for 2018 year-to-date has increased by 21 percent, now totaling $1.9 billion. Piscatella stated how "Plug N Play devices such as NES Classic Edition and Super NES Classic Edition have driven growth" and "Year-to-date hardware spending" was at its highest since 2011.
In June, the NES Classic Mini dominated the charts, in terms of the number of units sold. The SNES Classic Mini has also given overall hardware sales a boost.

Time for Nintendo shares to drop again and some moron on Wall Street to write another article about how Nintendo is finished and everything up to this point has been a fluke.
It's been a while. I wonder what did it last month.
The top selling hardware in my house last month was the ODROID-GO.
July was definitely a good month for the Switch and Nintendo, all things considered. Apparently it was a pretty decent month on most game fronts.
The Switch was a success a long time ago, but of course NintenDoomed™️ narratives and inferiority complexes still bounce around the internet. Just another day
hybrids are the future. sony will take note n copy n paste what nintendo are doing one day. no Im not a fanboy n I dont wear mario bro under pants
So...best selling in America? Or Canada? Australia? Your chosen quote mentions dollar value.
US Nintendo hardware sales:
Switch July 2017: ~222,000
Switch July 2018: ~262,000
3DS July 2017: ~105,000 (New 2DS XL launch)
3DS July 2018: ~84,000
NES + SNES Classic July 2018: ~330,000
Switch sales increased 18% year-over-year. 3DS sales fell 20% year-over-year.
The last time a system sold more than 260,000 units during the month of July was in 2011, when the Xbox 360 and DS sold 277,000 and 305,000 units respectively.
It is also interesting to note that the Switch sold almost as many units (~240K) in Japan in July. That is 500K units sold in those markets alone for July, which is usually not a very active month in terms of sales numbers.
Nintendo’s headed to the 2018 Salesbowl!!!
Can’t wait until Reggies waving his championship ring in the face of those Sony & XBox fanboys!!!
We’re all going to Disneyla... er Universal Studios!!!
First time since December 2017? That's a big gap. Would have expected better.
Makes sense, I imagine Switch will also do the same for August. September - December is likely PS4 territory because of all the big 3rd party support Switch isn't getting and the odd 1st party game like Spider-Man.
@blockfight I wouldn’t have. It’s much more expensive than the competition at this point in it’s life cycle and doesn’t benefit from a marketing budget on the same level. Or, crucially the cumulative effect of the marketing budgets of big 3rd party AAA releases (the really important part of the AAA model - far more so than lacking the games themselves).
When the Switch is available at 2/3rds the price (or in attractive bundles equivalent to that) it’ll start to dominate the unit sales... But fall behind in value of sales.
Doomed.
@StuTwo I always figured the long term play is to have it cost whatever Is required to make it a viable multi per household console. I would think 2/3 would be getting there.
However, I’m not sure if Nintendo can even produce these at $200 yet. Portability doesn’t come cheap.
@Nehalem they’ll get there eventually. It’s also possible they won’t and they’ll make up the difference by increasingly bundling in software like Mario Odyssey.
@blockfight With the PS4 in its Prime Sales years in 2017 and 2018, is pretty surprising for the Switch to take the top Spot at all.
Most consoles sell better in year 3, 4 and 5 than year 1 and 2 by a very wide margin.
Wait, The Switch is #1 in A month not dominated by Indies and rehashed old games? But an actual well rated original game?
Shocking! - almost like 2017 🤔
@JHDK Had to google it, man. Thanks a million! This thing is an amazing (but kind of running on pirate software) piece of fun/tech for the house.
@Francema I don't mess around with soldering or filing down cases (like with so many Raspberry Pi devices) so this was a perfect project for me to put together. The GB Pocket form factor is also cool. I wish it could play GBA or SNES but as it stands I'm happy with having full libraries of NES, GB, GBC and SMS games for only like $35.
@JHDK Honestly, I wouldn't mind buying it ready to go either! I can handle the software side.
Really surprising to see anything topping PS4 at this stage in the Sony juggernauts life. As he library continues to build sales should continue to grow.
@Grumblevolcano
I'd be surprised if the Switch didn't top the charts in December. It topped in charts last year in December 2017, and this December will see the launch of Smash Bros Ultimate, which is tracking to become one of the biggest launches ever on a Nintendo platform.
@Rontanamo_Bay
Did you read the article??
The NPD reported that the Switch was the top-selling console in July 2018 in the US.
@Grumblevolcano lol
