Fortnite has been updated to version 5.20 today, adding a brand new shotgun weapon and a new limited time mode to sink your teeth into.
The new weapon is called the Double Barrel Shotgun, unsurprisingly featuring a two-shot mechanism for devastating damage at close range. The new gun is available in epic and legendary variants, and delivers high burst damage at very close range while falling off heavily at a distance. At extremely close range, this beast can deal up to 150 base damage per shot. Ouch!

The new limited time mode features one constantly moving storm which closes in on the island. In Steady Storm, players must stay ahead of the terrifying, ever-lurking storm and take down the other players along the way.
Mode Details
- One Storm that closes in over the course of 15 minutes.
- There are no safe zone circles. Keep an eye on the map to predict where the Storm will close in.
- The Storm does 10 damage per second.
- Challenges are tracked in this mode
On top of all this, the usual, high number of tweaks have been made to eliminate any new bugs and optimise performance across all platforms, but a particularly tasty bit of news for Switch owners is that there has been a "significant GPU optimisation" for this particular version. Essentially, this increases the dynamic resolution by 10% in scenes that are heavily demanding. Hopefully, this will help to alleviate some of the recent performance issues experienced by those playing on Nintendo's platform.
Will you be trying out the new goodies? Let us know down below.

@BouncingHat
Why shouldn't they report new updates on Fortnite?
Please dear Bush God, make the game load in faster. I literally died at least five times bc I landed in a low poly building that I couldn't move.
The vehicles better be back and for the love of god why no carear tab. The the f are they actually doing at HQ
@Alber-san because some of us don't care about this game, and surely it should just be put on the Game Forum for people who like it and not spam everyone, every single time theres a little update on it
@BouncingHat Fortnite is just a new PUBG which is a new Overwatch that is also a new Call of Duty. Nintendo never had these games, so when Fortnite came... NL like many Nintendo gamers felt happy to participate in something they never had before. It's just a phase, they will move on to something new later.
@BouncingHat Because it's got one of the biggest player bases on Switch right now.
Back on PC myself. You just can't see on Switch portable mode and sometimes the performance is all over the place even when the game is blurry. Playing on my last hotel's WiFi was a fiasco - so basically useless.
Deleted it, always can use the space for other stuff like Flipping Death.
I tried the game and then left it on my memory card to maybe go back and have another go at a later date, but the thing updates so often it was disrupting the games I actually wanted downloaded or updated. So I deleted it. Haven't missed it.
@BouncingHat why is it that the comment sections are riddled with whiny kids who feel the need to complain about an article that they are not forced to read, but make comments like yours on?
Fortnite is a game availble for a Nintendo system. This is an update for people like me who play this game and love shotguns too.
@BouncingHat @Bunkerneath
Some of us appreciate the regular Fortnite updates as it is a regular part of our Switch gaming. Nobody is forcing you to read these articles and, aside from the weekly challenge guides, the articles have been few and far between (this is the first one since Thursday). The effort required for you to complain vastly outweighs the effort required to scroll past them.
@McHaggis explains it perfectly. Furthermore, if you don't like something it doesn't mean it's not very popular and Nintendolife shouldn't talk about it. @Bunkerneath @BouncingHat
I will literally never understand the mentality of people that complain about the type of content on a website. How can you have so few problems in life that you have to go looking for them when they're not there?
Here's how a website works: if a game is popular, any website worth its salt will cover it because it has a huge fanbase. There's nothing sinister or sneaky in that – it just makes complete and utter sense from any angle of logic you come at it from.
On last count, Fortnite had a player base of 125 million players. That's a potential audience of 125 million players reading our site if we write about Fortnite. If a website's purpose is to write about what people are interested about, then why the hell would they ignore something as big as this? Seriously, why?
Because a couple of you don't like it? No – that's not how it works. It's on you to not read content you're not interested in, which is entirely within your right.
So motion controls are still unusable then?
@TheOpponent Adjust the motion controls to the numbers from GameXplain's video. It feels a lot better than the default setup. https://youtu.be/b5XKpMPgUCs?t=1m32s
I don't play the game frequently, but both my sons do. Its nice to be able to report back to them. I appreciate Nintendolife reporting not only on Fortnite news but all news related to anything Nintendo, no matter how frequent. The more content the better and I highly doubt that writing this article has kept us loyal readers from receiving additional articles because they reported about Fortnite updates!
As for the actual update, the new storm mode sounds awesome. I may have to give that a try. The ticking time bomb storm has always been a cool feature in Fortnite but now that there is no safe zone circle, it really gets exciting.
Will they ever get it optimised to 60fps? it's something that would improve the game tenfold. it's playable now but 60fps would be great. I've got into this game more recently and it's better than I initially thought. good game to jump in and out of on occasion
The Switch is my favourite way to play Fortnite. I'm glad they released it and will continue updates.
@Phin68 Does this do anything about how the Y-axis for motion can't be inverted?
Had to admit that I find this game very entertaining. Just grab a campaign or two a day and try to go as further as possible! I doubt I'll ever pay for a Pass or buy stuff, I make my runs old school!! LOL
@TheOpponent I don't play with inverted controls, so I didn't even know that option was missing. Sorry!
Okay, but let's focus on the real issue here, does anyone know if they've changed gyro controls from roll back to yaw??
@FoxyGlen I wish I could heart your comment more. I support and appreciate the Fortnite articles. It’s one of my regular games and has been since its release on Switch. I know I’m not the only one that appreciates the guides and weekly challenge reads, either. From an aggregate standpoint, why visit two sites when I can just come here? I don’t care for every single game covered in articles, but I just scroll over what I don’t need. I’m not going to a grocery store complaining they have celery if I was never interested in celery.
@HobbitGamer Haha, excellent way to put it! We hide the guides from the main feed as I kinda understand people not wanting it to appear there, but news is completely harmless surely!
@FoxyGlen Ah, that explains why I've had a hard time finding your guides!
Anyone else had all their challenges come up wrong? As in it says I've done none, but when I go in it displays ticks, denoting I have completed them?
@R4z0rGr1nd3r yup! Same issue here.
I was curious about what all was added to the game with the last update, and read it all here. If it weren't here I would have just google searched it, and clicked on one of the first links with an article. So in that sense, NL kept that tiny bit of ad revenue that would have gone to another site otherwise. AND had me participate in the conversation regarding this. So with that being said.... Sorry yall. It's readers like me who keep causing all the Fortnite articles to pop up. My bad!
The game is performing worse since the update.
Are shopping carts and ATKs back? I have one stupid challenge left to complete and I can’t do it without them.
So, with that information at the bottom... does this mean I can actually play Fortnite docked again?
My son loves Fortnite so I check these news reports and let him know if there's anything interesting, so keep it up guys.
@Phin68 Do you play with Pro Controller? When playing on handheld, gyro works great but when I switch to Docked mode and use my Pro, if I move right the aim tend to go left. And is not smooth as if I inverted he option. So annoying!
I hope they fix the broken Pro Controller motion controls soon. Been using Joycons to do challenges, but even joycon have an issue where the camera will sometimes randomly look down.
@Francema I play with the Joycon grip, but yikes. That must have been an oversight on Epic's part. Have you reported the gyro problem with the ingame bug-reporting feature?
@BouncingHat Hmm, half right. You said haterS but on a quick glimpse, I only saw one hater. If you see many more, I think the problem is on you - after all, replying should not count as hating.
@Bunkerneath @BouncingHat Another point of view: Do you also think there should have been less of all the Splatoon weapon updates on this site? If not, I kind of see a contradiction in your views. Not to say you are wrong with your opinions, everyone can have their own, and I am quite neutral on the topic at hand. Just to make you think =)
I played Fortnite for a month but its so repetitive I wont be getting next months Battle Pass.
@Phin68 will do that!! Thanks.
Fortnite=A game for all Ages!!! And gamers with Cross play-Cross Platform included.Just be thankful that's it's a Free game! At least and stop complaining and ranting that you want this and you want that! Epic does not have to do it ur dumb requests but they do make these updates for a reason just be glad and Happy we get updates often Unlike Nintendo's firmware updates ughhhhhh Lol is a whole different story cause when was the last Update we got? You guys remember cause I don't greaking Nintendo wants to be an ass and not even give us New Features we actually deserve that other consoles (Ps4,Xboxone) ehhhhhemmmmmm have already! It's frustrating my portable console can not have these featus or Netflix,YouTube,a freaking web browser,media player! I bought this system for game yes that's a standard but for more stuff that I would use in my everyday gaming Life.
