Last week, we showed you a lovely secret message that Sega had hidden on the back cover of Sonic Mania Plus' artbook, thinking that it would definitely be the coolest thing we see from the deluxe bundle.
Now, though, we've discovered that the Japanese version has its own exclusive Mega Drive-inspired reversible sleeve, fitting for that particular region, and it certainly gives that previous find a good run for its money.
The cover is aiming to replicate the Japanese version of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 on Mega Drive (or Sega Genesis for those of you in North America). You can see a side-by-side comparison of the two covers in this unboxing video below, shared on YouTube by ...Since Spacies. The comparison can be seen from around the 3:10 mark.

While it's all down to personal taste, we think this reversible cover has the North American and EU versions well and truly beat. The Japanese version is different in a couple of other ways, too, most notably losing that shiny gold cover for more of a matte finish. Either way, though, it's another lovely edition and has several members of Team Nintendo Life hovering over the "import" button as we speak.
As ever, feel free to share your thoughts with us in the comment section down below.

I love this trend of reversible covers. The only one I have so far is Bayonetta and I hope more publishers keep including them with their physical games.
The European and American versions have a reversible cover, but not that one.
Yeah just like all the other region versions?
Also, as far as I know, the Japanese version got a CD soundtrack too, which I think has ALL the music from the game, not just the tracks by Tee Lopes as the Data Discs vinyl...
@Mach_Rider That's only if you get the 'Press edition DX' the standard release is just that, no music disc or anythign else included.
@Rafke it's not based on Saonic 3, all of the import versions follow that similar aesthetic, just like the PAL one looks like a PAL aesthetic. It's just the same thing but wihtin it's own region style.
I mean, the EU has an exclusive one too so....this is news how?
Man people are rough on poor NL... They are just stating that Japan has a cool reversible cover on the game. No need to be rude for reporting on it.
Another example of Japanese cover art being the best of all the regions! This would definitely look good alongside my Japanese versions of Sonic 1, 2 and 3.
Oh god, I want it.
Prefer the reversible cover we got, though thats not saying much. They all look so good.
Yep, I'll be buying this game for a 3rd time...
This is the version to get... I paid U$ 50 on mine - I'm just happy it is on its way from Japan.
I don't really like the Japanese cover art.
I really dig the Genesis cover in the US as well. I switched it to the main cover immediately!!
I have the Switch one with the book Still closed, Gift for my Nephew - on a mission to make him a SEGA Fanboy like his Uncle!
Why don’t we get that? They didn’t even like the Megadrive!
I really don't see the purpose of all this talk about Switch game cases, they are terrible when it comes to wasted space which makes them awful for travel. I always keep all of my portable games in cases that hold a bunch of them so I can just grab that and have all my games with me in one convenient case.
Honestly though, there is no good reason for Switch games to have cases as big as they are, it's not like we get much in the way of instructions with games these days. Once in a while an indie game might make good use of it and include some extras, but that seems to be an exception.
Got mine today. Got it mostly for the soundtrack, but the reversible cover sure is the most gorgeous of the bunch as well!
@JayJ so that they can be displayed on store shelves, and you don't have to squint to see the box.
Meh, it doesn't say how much MEGA POWER the cartridge has...
@Dayton311 People on the internet love to moan about stuff, hence the comments. Thanks for showing some common sense!
@607jf They still sell video games out of stores?
I mean I am joking when I say that but honestly sites like Amazon have for the most part replaced the old fashioned video game stores which seem to have largely gone out of business.
I got the Asian version an it has the soundtrack CD. I haven’t opened it though so I don’t know what the reverse cover is like.
