The ongoing commotion regarding loot crates and micro-transactions within video games has now reached an all-time high. Governments worldwide have stepped in and many video game companies have been required to publically disclose the exact odds attached to in-game item unlocks.
Psyonix is now also being much more transparent - revealing the exact odds players have of obtaining certain items in Rocket League in the latest post on the game's website. Highlighted below are the item drop rates in the 'Crates and Keys' system. This covers all five customisation item rarity levels found in the game's crates (along with the odds for painted and certified attributes).
- Rare Item: 55%
- Very Rare Item: 28%
- Import Item: 12%
- Exotic Item: 4%
- Black Market Item: 1%
- Chance of receiving Painted attribute: 25%
- Chance of receiving Certified attribute: 25%
The developer also noted the drop rates had been the same since the 'Crates and Keys' system was launched in September 2016 and went on to explain the three-step process used:
Our Crate system uses a three-step process. When you open a Crate with a Key or Decryptor, the system first determines what rarity level to choose from -- Rare, Very Rare, Import, Exotic or Black Market -- based on the percentages listed above. Next, the system determines which item within that rarity group is dropped. If you’re receiving an Import-level Customization Item from the Impact Crate, for example, each of the three Import items in the Impact Crate have an equal chance of dropping. Finally, the system determines if the item will drop with Painted and/or Certified attributes.
Do you play Rocket League regularly? Have you ever purchased keys to unlock crates? Tell us in the comments.

1% for Black Market item, that explains why after foolishly spending a fortune on crates that I've yet to get one. I've had a handful of exotic items and several import items. The thing that gets me most about the crates is you can unlock items you already have. Once you have that item it should be removed from the crate.
There's a few popular YouTubers who do crate openings on YouTube. The biggest and most popular guy John Sandman, done an opening on the (I think) Impact crates and unlocked 2 Black Market items back to back. With odds of 1% on even getting one I think it's clear now if it wasn't already that it was fixed for him to unlock those.
Micro-transactions are pretty terrible, and I avoid them like the plague...except when it comes to rocket league. Just being honest folks!
I love the transparency from them on this! Purely cometic items from these crates is a perfect system as well. I don't personally need them to enjoy my time but I do like viewing them on others when they beat me, haha
I hate the fact that games have evolved from "do X, Y, and Z in that order to unlock cool thing A" and have instead become "pay $XX.00 for a 1% chance to unlock cool thing B"
I wont claim I have never given into the temptation, because it can be a very strong temptation. But it is a dirty tactic, beneficial for companies, terrible for consumers.
Much respect for revealing this. Games like Galaxy of Heroes and Marvel strike force would never do this. It’s easier for them to exploit gambling addiction.
1%? Lol. Joke.
Lol i always get lame "rare" stickers for cars i dont even own, barely anything else.
Micro transactions: As long as they don’t impact the gameplay, I’m all set.
Fun Fact you can turn crates off in the options menu.
It seems like 1% is the chances of me finding an online match where the other team is actually competing lately. A few times now when I’ve tried playing online the other team is either stationary the whole time or driving around aimlessly.
Am I missing something here? Are these matches that people set up to pad their stats or something?
While I appreciate their willingness to reveal these rates, it would’ve been cool to leave some of it to be unlockable in-game, more than just the base model cars and accessories, etc. But, it’s still a fun game and I keep telling myself I don’t want that super rad batmobile. Now I have them all :/
Call me “out of the loop” but I never knew this game had succumbed to the Loot Box infection. Well thats one off my wishlist.
@FX102A The crates have always been there as far as I'm aware. It's not a bad system to be honest and they can be turned off altogether. Plus it's possible to earn keys just by playing. The contents are purely cosmetic.
Regardless,Rocket League is one of if not the finest competitive games ever made in my opinion, with endless replayability and for its price is probably the most value for money game on the Eshop.
I find it very funny that people actually expected it to be higher than 1% ...
I actually thought it was 0.01% or even less.
Be glad it's 1% because it could have been a lot worse.
@OorWullie From what I gathered they weren’t added till later in its original releases but been there since Day 1 for the Switch.
Also the “its just cosmetic” argument is IMHO a non-argument. In multiplayer games such as this one customising yourself is an integral part of the experience and thus there will always be temptations to do anything to grab items you desire. Yes they can be turned off (I’ll give the developers that one) but loot boxes will always impact the game as in the end the desire is for keys to be bought and that means the game has to be programmed to make the option desirable. Otherwise they’d have just given us the option to buy specific items as desired rather than pay to spin a wheel if we don’t want to repeatedly play or lack the time. The game isn’t too expensive, I’d rather just pay the remaining cash to full price game level for the rest of the stuff (if I can be guaranteed to get it).
Free to Play Economies should stay in Free to Play Games.
Not going to applaud them for this, clear rates for loot crates purchased with cash or in-game premium currencies should be legally required to be disclosed anyways. I know they need to keep monetising the game once the main playerbase has bought it, but frankly I find the loot crate cosmetic-only gambling mechanic to be super offputting. This kind of crap is barely acceptable in free-to-play gatchapon games, let alone big-name paid experiences with already-existing DLC. Just release some more cars as DLC if you need the extra cash.
I give Psyonix a half pass. They're by no means the most egregious offenders with lootboxes. Many players have treated the crate keys as a means to cast their vote in rewarding a developer for delivering a great product at an affordable price across all platforms.
On the flipside, they're only able to make it affordable for everyone because the crates have completely dwarfed any money they make from direct sales. Rocket League is such a perfect storm of 'easy to learn, hard to master', so the diverse crowd of people it attracts obviously includes a large share of youths who are extra susceptible to gambling triggers.
They get a half pass. They haven't been evil, but they've also been profiting massively off of preying on people's base instincts.
I've got the game on Switch and also had it day one on PS4. Not spent a single penny on in game transactions and have absolutely no desire to. It adds nothing to the game for me.
I decided a few weeks ago not waste any more money on the crates, simply because it was so hard to get anything nice.
I've let the crates build up and I've been trading them for painted cars instead. I've gotten atleast 14 good cars from doing this. One guy even traded me his toon explosion for 11 crates, which then went on to be traded 1:1 for a white werewolf.
It's insane what people will trade for crates just so they can have more goes at getting the 1 percent.
