Nintendo has revealed that the upcoming Switch title Super Smash Bros. will be playable at a series of events in Japan during June and July.
The demo will kick off its Japanese tour at RAGE 2018 Summer, which takes place on June 17th at Makuhari Messe, Chiba. A week later it will be at Jisedai World Hobby Fair ‘18 Summer in the same location, and then on July 16th it will be at Jump Victory Carnival 2018 Tokyo - again at Makuhari Messe. The final date is July 22nd, when it will be playable at Jump Victory Carnival 2018 at the Intex, Osaka.
Given the timing of these events, it's fair to assume we'll be seeing a lot of this game at E3, which takes place on June 12th.

WHAT!!!!
Settle it in RAGE!
Enhanced port.
Hopefully there will be a demo around the same time ,like the 3DS got. For everyone too,so none of that code nonsense like the last time. The begging for codes on here was horrendous.
Maybe Ice Climbers will be one of the playable characters for these events ..... okay I should really shut up about the Ice Climbers now
@Dark_aap An enhanced port of Melee.
I figured we’d be seeing a lot, since the tournament is happening. Now just to peg down that release date.
And stop trying to convince me to reserve a copy, GameStop.
Interesting...
Did you know? Super Smash Bros will be playable at the special release date in 2018!
Shouldn’t be surprising if it’s being revealed with an invitational next month at E3
@Dark_aap *nothing wrong with an enhanced port
@MH4 But it devalues Wii U game collections!
Will someone please think of them?!
Had a discussion with my kids in the car about how many characters would be available at release, how many available later.
If this were a port, that's 58 day 1. Maybe some locked behind challenges but all there for the taking. That's a lot of characters day 1 in the time of DLC.
I guessed 12 day 1, like the original game, b/c so far this game has the same name, and gives them plenty to add later, maybe in a season pass, maybe free, maybe with amiibo, or maybe a little all of the above.
My kid guessed 40. I guess he figured that was a good day 1 number based on SSBU with a little room to grow.
We talked about it and compromised on 24 as a number that would make people happy day 1 yet give them plenty to look forward to as DLC.
The more I hear about this game being playable and ready in 2018 the smaller I think the release day roster is, the more DLC there will be. And I already think some will be dropped anyway, like the Miifighters, those are gone.
So I really don't think this game is a port, as some people seem to think based on the turnaround time, to me the turnaround time means it's a small game day 1, the rest to follow. See SSBU, Spaltoon and ARMS. Even MK8 took awhile to be finished.
So the good news is - it's not a port - the bad news it - it's not going to be a full game day 1. Which will be great for a lot of you who like that kind of thing, but doesn't seem right for a fighting game if your main only gets added later, you'll have to git gud real fast and play catch up. But that's the way this is starting to feel to me, slow drip. And that's what fighters do these days - see DBXV and DBFZ.
To be fair the 15 characters in Mario Tennis Aces is clouding my judgement at the moment. Seeing that bracket of 16 w/ Mario repeated at 1 and 16 kind of stuck w/ me. Hopefully SSB is 40, but 24 seems likely with what I know right now. Why only 8 people for SSB Tournament at E3, why not make a huge 64 player tournament out of it? Or at least 16 or 32. Not enough playable characters perhaps?
@SmaggTheSmug As someone who proudly owns Smash for Wii U, I'd be all for a port that Smashed together the 3DS and Wii U versions.
I understand what you mean, though. There's still a few great Wii U exclusives, like Super Mario 3D World or Nintendo Land (let's be honest, the best part of Nin. Land is the Luigi's Mansion game) or the original Splatoon. Kirby & the Rainbow Curse, Twilight Princess/Wind Waker HD, NES Remix 1 & 2, and PM Color Splash also comes to mind.
And who could forget the gem that was AC: amiibo Festival (that hurt to write)?!
That list and that one joke out of the way, I believe that the new Smash is not a port at all. I was just saying that I'd be okay if it was.
@Alex18 I completely agree. Smash is definitely gonna be a brand-spanking-new title.
However, I wouldn't complain if it were a port.
Also, I don't think anyone was actually "begging" for a port.
Exciting that we will see it in about a month.
It doesn’t matter if it’s a new game or not (for the record I believe it is) What matters is:
#1 It’s Smash
#2 It controls like a dream
#3 The movesets remain true to the series
That’s the long way of saying this franchise is the surest dang thing in all of videogames.
Just gimme Dixie Kong or King K. Rool. I’d like to see one or the other playable within my lifetime. I also wouldn’t complain if Paper Mario appeared.
Why have they STILL not confirmed whether it's a new game or not?
Let me know why our "Enhanced Port" has a new theme song.
I'll wait.
@Kai_
Why should they? Why would you think, it isn't?
@rjejr I think you have it spot on. It'll be a brand new game with all the bells and whistles added later, just like ARMS and Splatoon
@chardir You have the saddest little avatar I've ever seen, I think I saw a tear in his eye while I was reading your comment.
Not sure you meant it that way but I'm easily influenced.
@rjejr No, no, little Linktocat is smiling!
JUMP VICTORY CARNAVAL?!?
GOKU!!
hahaha... no!
@chardir "little Linktocat is smiling"
Really? I don't think so, all I see is sad lost puppy anime eyes. Though I suppose if I saw a larger version first and he was smiling in it then maybe I could see a happy kid playing dress up being a knight, but all I see in this pic is a sad lost boy.
Sorry, no offense meant, that's just what I see. But what do I know, I have a frog playing a banjo.
Cool, but I really hate how Japan = Tokyo. Looking forward to seeing footage of the game!
Every time I come to a Smash article comment section, I'm left utterly mindblown that this "izzit a port" discussion actually made it past the first week of reveal.
@KingdomHeartsFan You're honestly right. I don't care if it's a port or not, just give me the game!
...and make someone from ARMS playable, while you're at it. 😂
Subspace emissary mode this time please. Also a few new characters we know about inklings and botw zelda and a few stages and it can quite easy be called smash 5 or whatever they want to call it. They can't exactly call it smash for the Wii U on the switch rofl.
I hope they will hype it a bit more before the E3. Trailer?
If you want to call this an "enhanced port" then you have to admit that Smash 4 was an "enhanced port" of Brawl.
This will most likely take the existing code base of Smash 4 and tweaking how some characters behave, adding in new stages, potentially new game mechanics (though they'd have to be careful not to get accused of ruining the game, I suspect Nintendo will play things safe) and adding in new characters in the roster.
I suspect that given that so much of the work was done on Smash 4, we'll either be getting a lot of new characters, or a cool story mode like Brawl had. (I really loved playing Subspace Emissary).
As far as not giving us the whole roster right away, I'd be fine with that. It would be really hard for them to hold back new characters from getting spoiled though given that they know that data miners are out there. It wouldn't be practical to ship only the first 12 characters and then unlock more with each update. But it really would be cool to for the first week only have the cast of the original Smash, before Melee's cast got unlocked, and then Brawl, then 4, and then whoever the new characters are.
Still, I'm hoping they do something really fun in terms of how you unlock characters, and I hope there's more single player fun than just things like that weird board game thing. I love having people over to play Smash, but sometimes it'd be nice to just play by myself, especially when I first get the game. Smash 4 really didn't have a lot of good single player fun, so I remember Brawl more fondly.
