The Switch has rapidly become a premier destination for fans of the shmup genre, with titles like Graceful Explosion Machine, Danmaku Unlimited 3, Steredenn: Binary Stars, and many more to offer fans a diverse range of content. It’s never a bad thing to see more shmups coming to the storefront, then, and an upcoming game by the name of Squadron 51 looks like it’ll put an interesting spin on the tried and true gameplay.
Squadron 51 takes the visual style of 50’s era action movies—complete with grainy black and white visuals and cheesy effects—and applies it to the shmup genre, tasking you with defending the earth against an alien invasion. With six levels, four planes, an intriguing story, and two player co-op, this will certainly be one to keep an eye on for when it releases on the Switch eShop sometime later this year.
What do you think? What’s your favorite Switch shmup? How do you think this one will turn out? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

This looks beautiful. Everything is so authentic right down to how the plane moves. Cannot wait for this.
Wow, that’s crazy. Like the Cuphead of shmups!
Ehm... I don't see any video here...
Edit: it's been fixed.
@HappyAxiom Fixed!
Damn, that's a great aesthetic. And it's their first game too?
Oh wow, wasnt expecting it to look that good 😳 That looks incredible
Day 1. Looks amazing.
The developers deserve praise for the art style alone. I hope the game plays as good as it looks.
@SwitchVogel
Thank you!
Love the effects on the explosions looks like another day one . Man there are sooo many great games on Switch right now.
WOW! this looks very cool
Looks incredible, although your plane looks disproportionately large. Still definitely on my list though
One for the watch list
This looks amazing.
Very impressive 50s visual filmic aesthetic. Plane looks a tad cumbersome but again that's probably not too unrealistic, lol!
I want to pick up a couple of schmups, looks like I’m spoiled for choice
Wow that really looks stunning visually. Hopefully the gameplay is up to scratch as this could be special
Too old for me, I prefer my games in Technicolor. If my grandad was alive he'd have been hyped.
I joke, this looks incredible. They've absolutely nailed the look of these old movies which I loved to watch as a kid. If they can pull off the gameplay as well then this will be an amazing experience. Can't wait to find out!
Looks really good.
This game looks so perfect. I really hope it’s good. As far as my fav shmup? Hasn’t released yet, but I enjoy Rive for now.
The graphics and presentation look awesome. Gameplay looks standard.
Holy s***! This looks incredible!! Day one for me
Looks amazing! Hopefully the gameplay matches up to the visuals.
Cool 😎 I’m in!!
The final boss ought to be the Giant Claw.
Looks fantastic! So original.
...yes, yes indeed! Where do I sign up?
Yes! Yes! And,uh...Yes!
Pretty cool looking. I like the bombers that get to fire in several directions with their turrets.
This looks fantastic! I hope there's more power-ups and ships other than what's in the video. Gotta see the bosses as well. I wonder if they will have a vintage color option later on.
Still waiting to pick up Earth Atlantis, and hoping Cuphead will jump to the Switch.
This actually looks pretty good. Might pick it up.
wow looks pretty cool actually!
Well this is a surprise. Looks incredible. Day 1 here.
I don't even care how much it costs... I just need to have this game.
I love how this looks!
@NinChocolate isnt Cuphead the Cuphead of Shmups?
Since Cuphead has Shmup sections
Cuphead and this for nindies!
Very very pretty visually... I hope the game play is top notch.
I'm pretty sceptical of this one.
I'm sorry, but there have been many western indie shmups that focused on graphics and art direction that ended up disappointing in the gameplay department.
Honestly, seeing over 40 comments on this while people here barely cared about Psyvariar Restoration's announcement is pretty disappointing.
This looks great!
I really do appreciate these devs doing something different in the stg genre. It's refreshing in a genre that feels like it's stagnating a bit
Looks really great, and I simply LOVE the aesthetics, but too bad about the language, imho. However, I do hope this is just a beta trailer and the English language version is still coming.
Portuguese/Brazilian just doesn't work for me. No offense meant to native speakers, though.
What is this 50's you speak of?
@Appleflap I’m not sure, I’ve only played the first few levels of Cuphead
Looks fantastic. An Imaginative and original take on the shmup genre. A great first effort for these devs. I hope the gameplay and different modes match the visuals.
This looks really lovely. Great graphics.
I am interested. I'm still going to wait for more info.
Looks pretty cool!
