The dust has barely settled on that Nintendo Direct and the announcement for Mario Tennis Aces' release date - 22nd June, don't you know - and now we've got another tennis star strolling out onto the centre court of Nintendo Switch. So polish up your racket because Tennis World Tour is swinging for aces on 22nd May.
So yes, it's dropping exactly a month before Mario's new sports romp, and the developer (Breakpoint) includes veterans from the long-dead Top Spin series, so you know you're getting a proper tennis simulation with pedigree in its blood. Check out the developer diary below to hear how it's bringing current-gen simulation to Switch and other consoles.
Let us know your thoughts on Tennis World Tour below. Is this town big enough for two big tennis games on Switch?

If it has a levelling system and such like the Virtua Tennis games I may have to get in on this. If its just basic tennis then bleh pass.
Dead in the water. Really who wants to play this when Aces is right around the corner.
There is always a place for sim games. If they have the Williams Sisters in it I'll buy.
Edit: that roster hurts...I'm out.
Virtua Tennis please!
@Spoony_Tech Different market surely with some overlap.
yo @Dom, will there be a cumulative article with all the announcements from the direct? We need to play some bingo here, it's long overdue!
Oooh this has thrown a spanner in the works on my decision to buy Mario tennis aces or not
keeps fingers crossed for motion controls
Normally with a Sim game like this I'd be a Graphics whore and get the Xbox One version but in this case motions controls would swing it for me Pun intended
Ugh, the usual mediocre selection of players...
No Rafa?
No Djokovic?
No Murray?
NO SERENA?! - NO DEAL!
@Spoony_Tech can't tell if serious or not.
These guys take tennis very seriously.
Good motion controls will be the decider for me.
excellent, I was going to get Mario Tennis but I'd rather have realistic Tennis game so good news.
@crackafreeze Someone told me on the forums here a while back that it's something to do with the way that the ATP/WTA handle licensing - so, unfortunately, they may never come
I really think that they're missing a trick though - when you look at other official sports franchises like FIFA, NBA, Madden etc, those games are almost more popular than the sports they're based off! ..which surely benefits everyone?
They only have one great male player - and Serena (one of the greatest sporting stars on the planet) is a particularly huge miss! ..very disappointing
@Spoony_Tech The same reason some people choose Forza and GT over Mario Kart maybe?
@gortsi Keep your eyes open at 4pm
Another Tennis game, great stuff. Must be a lucrative racket.......
Top Spin is a more realistic game than Virtua Tennis, but the arcade nature of Virtua Tennis is more fun.
prefer mario tennis the games have always seemed more fun then any more realistic game
I’ll take a well done reality based tennis game over Nintendo’s any day of the week. So if this had good motion controls, real tourneys and rankings, I’m in.
I might be interested if it has motion controls
I just want the next Wii Sports game....Switch Sports!!!!!!!
I love me some good Tennis game for some reason. I hope it comes with good motion controls.
I will buy both of these! I do hope they have a good single player in this one too though
High hopes for this. Would much prefer a serious tennis game over....whatever type of 'Tennis' game Aces is.
I am getting this.
@crackafreeze Love it: Elias Ymer representing Sweden. Makes me miss the days of Magnus Norman and Thomas Enqvist...
It is a shame to see no Nadal, Murray or Djokovic, but let's face it, the tour has barely seen them either over the past six months. Nadal is only just getting back, but who knows for how long? And Djokovic and particularly Murray may never get back to where they were. New balls, please.
I love tennis games, and this would be right up my street - if it weren't for Mario Aces coming the month after. Budget and time limitations suggest I'll only get one - and I think Aces will almost certainly have more players online. And my kids will enjoy it more.
@dkxcalibur : Mii Sports.
@sillygostly Sounds good to me....as long as they make it.
My family still plays Wii Sports to this day. I dream of an updated version on the Switch with improved versions of the existing sports, plus others added.
I can't wait. I'll be getting Mario Tennis too, but I'm not interested in all of the new trick shots and power ups going on in that game. Luckily it can be played without all of that. As long as this game has online play I'm day 1.
@dkxcalibur : I'd be happy for a complete edition with the improved Club versions of the original Wii Sports coupled with the Resort activities (and now without all of the unnecessary recalibration every few minutes). This is what Wii Sports Club on Wii U should have been, really.
In any case, it's a day one buy whenever Nintendo decides to release such a game.
I'll be honest, I was somewhat interested in it back then, but looking at how good Mario Tennis Aces is, I'll...kind of pass.
@dkxcalibur
Oh, if Mii Sports does exist, i would like to see :
1. Full body of Mii
2. Customable Mii outfits
3. More than 10 different Sports
4. Boxing included again, with Option for Males Mii to be Shirtless or not.
5. Mini games
6. Split screen for Handheld mode and TV Mode
7. Special Gauge meter, like Mario Tennis Aces
8. Non Mii playable characters, such as from other Nintendo franchises.
9. Open World place, we can build our Sport center with our house, wandering around, design your small city.
@Spoony_Tech if this is a quality tennis title, then I will, for one.
As a fan of Smashcourt, Virtua and even the super deformed one on Wii, I welcome this with open arms.
Sure, Tennis Aces is tennis at its core, but that's like saying you dont want Ridge Racer on Switch because MarioKart.
Its a wide genre. I say bring on as many quality sports titles to Switch as possible.
The more the merrier. I would have prefered a new VT, but we'll see how this'll turn out. Definitely excited to see a current gen tennis game hit scene. It has been way too long. If this turns out good, I'll might have to pick it up for PS4, and if Aces turns out good as well, it'll probably pick that up for Switch on top of that!
I was a bit disappointed by all 'fluff' added to Aces, as presented in the Direct, but thankfully they went on to announce a 'simple rules mode', without all that supershot and racket breaking stuff. These mechanics might be fun, but they might also distract from the underlying joy of simply playing a fun tennis game in an arcade environment.
Based on the trailer, it seemed like they might have layered to much on top an already rather complex game, but we'll see how it turns out - anyways, thankful for those simplified rules as an option.
Also curious to see how the motion controls will pan out. Any info on whether we can still control player position with the second joycon, or whether it is just like in the Direct, where all he apparently did was control the swing?
I mean, that would take alot away from the game imho, if you were limited to swinging without movement Oo
This is the top spin developers. They make good games but I much prefer the arcade style of the Virtua tennis and Mario tennis games.
I'll correct that for you:
"In my opinion, the shot variety and career modes well and truly sucked"
well well well, nothing new here, Tennis World Tour was already announced last year that its release date would be in May 2018 in order to match with the dates of Roland Garros grand slam !
I loved top spin. If this games works good, i am in.
