Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove is one of the greatest success stories to emerge from Kickstarter, proving that fans and developers can come together to realize a shared vision. What started as a stellar action platformer has grown by leaps and bounds over the years, with the last expansion—Shovel Knight: King of Cards—due out sometime in the next few months. The Switch eShop offers up the option to buy Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment—one of the previous expansions—as a standalone game, but now Yacht Club Games has announced a promotion to tempt owners of the expansion into getting the full version.
In a blog post on the studio’s site, it was announced that Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove will be getting a discount of up to 40% off if you already own Specter of Torment. The decision was made because those who bought both games were technically paying more than they should; the discount just about covers the price of Specter of Torment. With the new expansion just around the corner, the time has never been better to upgrade.
What do you think? Which campaign was your favorite? Will you be taking advantage of this discount? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Seriously? And I happen to be one of the unlucky people who bought Specter of Torment, then Treasure Trove before this discount? That's flipping annoying...
This is fair - nicely done, Yacht Club. The Treasure Trove is arguably the best-value game in the eShop - and even more so with King Knight on the way. As for my favourite, it's probably Plague Knight - I'd love to see him in Smash!
Still waiting for a physical version of the whole pack
@Fazermint
That's what I thought this article is all about - holding out for the physical release myself. Hope they will release a physical version when the last DLC comes out.
Never played the game(s) and not planning to
Please release a physical version, then i will get it.
Or give people who have it on other systems (I have it on 3DS) a way to purchase for cheaper
@H_Hunter
That sounds so stern. Why are you so against them?
One of the few kickstarters that didn’t rob people and delivered a truly stunning game.
@H_Hunter You must be so proud
@H_Hunter That is good to know ... I guess.
On the Wii U both were free dlc for those of us who already had Shovel Knight.
I need to get physical with this one, if you know what I mean...
Us Wii U owners be laughing.
I'm tempted to buy it, but I will probably just dust off my Wii U when the new expansion comes out.
Have it on Wii U, such a good game, I was genuinely surprised at the quality of it. Top drawer AAA independent third party support if you like.
@BensonUii Your analogy doesnt really work as both the 3DS and Switch are made by the same company, where Kindle and iBook owned by different companies.
@Fazermint I fully see where you are coming from, I’ve been wanting this right back when it was on Wii U, but didn’t get it. When a physical version dies drop I’ll be all over it
Still waiting for a physical version...
Can someone clarify for me please. I’m looking at buying treasure trove, if I do will I get the Kings of Cards expansion for free?
@beazlen1 yes. See treasure trove as the main game + season pass.
I don't really understand why Specter of Torment is a standalone on the Switch anyway. I bought Shovel Knight and saw that it is already included, why pad out the library like that?
Yacht Club does it again! I already bought Treasure Trove on the Switch launch day, but this is a really cool thing!
Now, please give a release date for the new amiibo!
The usual boring 'physical release' comments. I'd like to see all games of these relatively small size go digital only as an effort to combat plastic waste. I understand larger games such as Odyssey and ABOTW making a strong case for physical, but not these more Indie titles, must coming in way under 1gb.
This has all become way too confusing now. Once they stared charging for all the different dlc additions I've got no idea what's what with the game anymore. They just need to set a price for the lot and be done with it. A physical copy with everything on the cart would be useful. I have the game on 3ds, does that get all the extras for free like the Wii u did?
You guys know there are 400+ games on the eshop that won't be receiving physical releases. Recommend you take the plunge on Shovel Knight. It and Enter the Gungeon are some of the most fun games on the Switch and totally worth the price of admission. Neither is over a gigabyte of hard drive space if you're concerned about that. Your My Nintendo account also logs your purchases so if you fry your Switch with a cheap 3rd party dock, you can redownload them on your new one that you dropped another 300 bucks on.
@darkswabber okay great, thanks! I’ve got this and The Mummy to get on with when the missus is watching BSTV.
@SmaggTheSmug plague of shadows and shovel of hope can also be bought seperately on switch. King of cards will get a seperate release too. Basically you either pay 4x €10 or €25 once. I think the seperate releases are for those that don’t care about all campaign and only care about 1 or 2.
It took a few years for me to say this confidently, but Shovel Knight is absolutely my favorite game ever.
Good to see Yacht Club is making cool deals like this for people who didn’t buy the OG release or the Treasure Trove.
I’m ready for King of Cards, and whatever comes after this long long Shovel Knight content cycle.
@Old-Red Your 3DS copy will continue getting the free updates. All versions of the original base game get the expansions free.
Separating the different campaigns is great for people who just want one, but not the others. Specter Knight’s expansion was so good, that I could see some people buying it on its own. It’s good to have options.
Shovel Knight is one of those games thats just cooler to have physically, despite its size. I bet it would come with a rad manual and that new game smell we all loved as kids. I may just buy it a third time, even though my Wii U and 3DS are readily accessible. Its just that good of a game. I normally complain about that sort of thing, no cross-buy and whatnot. But I do appreciate true art, and Shovel Knight is indeed that.
@H_Hunter I dont know why. I just think its sad.
Think this should have been the case all along honestly, given the situation, but better late than never right? That said I bought Shovel Knight Treasure Trove already anyway and never bothered with Specter of Torment stand-alone so this never affected me luckily.
That said, I wonder why the reverse isn't true, that you can basically get Specter of Torment for free if you already own Treasure Trove. I know it's basically pointless, but hey, it'd make sense I think.
@0muros no it’s not
This is pretty smart of them, I was holding off on buying the full game (already have it on 3DS), but if I bought Specter of Torment now and Treasure Trove later, I'd be buying a part of the game twice. Probably getting Specter of Torment now
When dies shovel King come out? Or has it already released? I'm so behind with this game....😣
@beazlen1 Yup! If you own Treasure Trove, you get Specter and KoC included.
@H_Hunter I just pushed the ignore button. 3...2....1. Goodbye.
@Bunkerneath
Bought it on 3DS, and then again on Switch. Honestly I never regreted doing so : the game looks great on Switch, and is worth every penny.
@Bizzyb King of Cards coming this year.
Might be they'll announce tuesday on the Nindie direct when it's coming out (if they don't announce it's out "right now").
Weren't we supposed to be getting some massive update for this game earlier this year that was adding some new content?
I really want this on Switch, but I own on Wii U. I can't really justify buying it again, which sucks. Wish was a discount for that.
@garfreek Hunter must have some weird vendetta against masterpiece games. Maybe Shovel Knight murdered his family, and now he swears revenge?
I can't imagine any other good reason not to play the game.
I really hope King Knight is still coming to WiiU so I can maybe get around to completing the whole game...
I would buy Shovel Knight again on Switch if there is a physical copy with ALL DLC and updates... with absolutely no need to download anything, for future reasons.
