Dataminers have uncovered evidence within the latest Pokémon GO update that the game will be getting story quests involving some of the human characters.
According to the Silph Road subreddit, the system appears to feature multiple quest steps and animations for characters such as Professor Willow.
These quests will have a wide range of criteria, such as catching Pokémon, spinning Pokéstops, hatching eggs, walking with their buddy Pokémon and much more. There's mentions of rewards being dished out for completing these quests, too.
As spotted by Eurogamer, this update arrives shortly after Niantic made a key "editorial" hire:
Coincidence? You decide. While you're at it, let us know if you'd like to see story-focused quests in Pokémon GO by posting a comment.

Well, now. That would be pretty cool. Still play fairly often. Never heard of the Silph Road group, but that seems worthwhile
I began to play one year after the craze for the game (so in July 2017). I'm still playing it from time to time when I go for a walk (even if it is bloody cold outside currently). I'm happy that the game is still a thing today, it's really a fun app and it is the Pokemon game that I enjoy the most currently (I had enough of Alola for a while, didn't even bother to try Ultra). It's a fun way to play yet being active and outside
I'm still playing daily since launchday.
Some story and character would suit this game for sure. After all, I barely even know how Professor Willow looks anymore! And your team's leader guy is only ever seen to appraise the IV's of your Pokémon.
They also need to move on with these Ex Raids. There seems to be a pretty consistent pattern to triggering them now, but yesterday a very confusing wave of Ex Raid Passes were handed out in my area, mostly to people who never did a raid on the gym in question!
This pleases me.
Sounds good to me
@Slaz At least those people may live near that gym. I got my first and only Ex invite, for a gym in another country, I visited once during a business trip, last year!?!?!?!
@Charlosa Haha that’s crazy. I have yet to receive a pass but if it happens I sure hope it’s a little closer by.
This sounds awesome, could get me playing more regularly at the moment it's just on odd walks. Might start going for dedicated missions with this though.
The objectives from the datamine sound like they’re just the things you already do in the game daily. From the SilphRoad article:
———————
The previous two objectives were:
QUEST_FIRST_CATCH_OF_THE_DAY
QUEST_FIRST_POKESTOP_OF_THE_DAY
We now see new objectives for:
QUEST_CATCH_POKEMON
QUEST_SPIN_POKESTOP
QUEST_HATCH_EGG
QUEST_WALK_BUDDY
QUEST_FEED_POKEMON
QUEST_WIN_GYM_BATTLE
QUEST_COMPLETE_RAID_BATTLE
QUEST_LEVELUP_BADGE
And excitingly, a new
QUEST_MULTI_PART
Which should lend well to combined objectives.

Hopefully they do more to add some color to the gameplay and don’t rely strictly on the storytelling narrative to keep it engaging.
I still play the game on the way in & out of work as well as with friends on a Sunday... have my first Mewtwo exRaid on Thursday (tomorrow).
It's possible too much is being read into this datamine as the term "quest" was already in the game as @adamapple stated... this could simply be the start of Niantic optimising the game (though a storymode is definitely more likely than Niantic ACTUALLY optimising the game).
Now we have to kill the cheaters.
Just started playing a month ago and got to Level 25 already. My friend and I had a blast on our first Community Day catching surfing Pikachu (although I was disappointed it wasn't on a surf board). We're looking forward to the next Community Day on Feb. 24th featuring the rare Dratini with an exclusive move! (I'm guessing it's Extremespeed although it won't matter as they forget moves upon evolution)
