When a Premier League side signs a new player - especially one as capped and experienced as Portuguese midfielder João Mario - fans often find unusual ways to welcome the new footballing talent. And when that player happens to share a name with a certain mustachioed plumber, well you can imagine there's a lot of opportunity for Nintendo-based crossover.
And one West Ham United fan by the name of Tequilo didn't disappoint with a short animation that shows the 25-year-old playmaker and international emerging from a Warp Pipe, hitting a ? Block and collecting a football-shaped power-up. It's silly, yes, but we can't help but applaud someone combining their love for their club and their passion for all things Ninty.

COYI!
How appropriate as WHU play 8 bit football. They had another great result at the weekend in the FA Cup. Still, it's a nice gesture from the fan.
The team ignorant football fans constantly mistake my Avs jerseys for.
Like the letters NHL aren’t a smegging give a way 😑
Mário is a very common name in Portugal. Still, it's a nice tribute.
Ha, that's a cool tribute. Not necessarily out of the blue, though, as Super Mario is a very common nickname in football - both Balotelli and Mario Gómez were called that during their heyday.
The bubbles are a nice touch
