While once previously slated for PC and PlayStation 4 only, indie developer GUTS Department has revealed the long-gestating 2D genre mashup that is Aegis Defenders will be launching on Nintendo Switch as well, arriving on 6th February alongside the other versions of the game.
Originally Kickstarted in 2014, the game has been thoroughly updated over the years through fan feedback and testing, so the version we're getting on Switch will be (we hope) the best possible incarnation. The game - which mixes exploration, tower building and defense in a cute 16-bit art style - will also support split Joy-Con support so you and a friend can make the most of drop in/drop out co-op.
So we're getting another modern take on retro, and we don't have to wait weeks or months after other versions to play. Let us know what you think and whether or not you'll be picking up Aegis Defenders next month.

The "Tower Defense" part peaks my interest. I am surprised we have yet to see a decent game from that genre on Switch yet. Wouldn't mind me some classic Bloons TD.
EDIT: Oh Kingdom New Lands was pretty fun, but very limiting.
It lloks promising.
Not bad, love the art style.
I wonder how much longer the market will continue to be flooded with these 'retro inspired' game graphics.
The novelty wore off a good while back.
I love TD games, esp. the ones with a "twist" of sorts - like mashing it up with an RPG or Shooter for instance, as previous games have done. The art style is also right down my alley.
If the reviews hold up, I'd might have to Day1 it
Also, how about bringing Lock's Quest to the Switch? The game has already been remastered for traditional controls on PS4/X1, so porting it to the Switch shouldn't be that hard. I really loved that game on the DS, with it's mash-up of TD, RTS and RPG. One of my favs on the system actually. I wouldn't mind replaying it on the Switch at some point, and I definitely would be it for nostalgia's sake. In fact, I've been holding off from getting it on PS4, as I figured there is a good chance it'll come to the Switch this year - the year of the Switch port
That the "novelty" of retro inspired game graphics wore off a good while back FOR YOU, does not mean that it wore off FOR EVERYBODY.
Will buy... looks superb
@HappyMaskedGuy Agreed. And half of these retro inspired games have graphics that aren't even done right. Pixels that rotate and scale mixed with high-res art like in this game is just hideous.
It's just lazy.
I was put-off by the words "tower defense" but this looks like it was implemented really well. Looks great, hopefully it isn't too expensive.
@Ralek85 Would love some LQ on Switch.
Split Screen co-op? Customize Charterers? i'm in!
This looks good, definitely piqued my interest.
Just pre-order from RU eShop for mere $7.50... no question ask... Love the art style & all the gameplay mesh up being offer within a game... ton of replay-ability here...
@Tenakira the RU eShop?
@leo13 Russian eShop 419 rubles roughly $7.50
Going to get World to the West (Japan), Dandara & Disc Jam (Mexico) later
@Cosats So does that make you right, and me wrong?
If you want to play 2D mock-SNES-graphic games for the next twenty years, then that's just dandy. Me personally, I want genuine progress. Not naval gazing cash grabs.
@Tenakira that's cool. Can you still play the game in English?
Can I use my regular card to pay or do I have to pay some other way?
@Tenakira are all games cheaper on other shops or only select ones?
@leo13 Aegis Defenders (All eShop) only support English & Japanese for now; so yes, you can play in English.
I’m using my visa credit, none issue; so far bought from Japan, Mexico & Russia, all without hiccup.
There’s a eShop price checker; jst google. Mexico & Norway normally hv the cheaper games listing.
There's retro inspired and then there's games actually trying to do new things with pixel graphics. This game looks to be one of them. Retro games like VVVVVV or Undertale Which may or may not be bad games depending on who your are, but these are the kinds of games where retro is used for retro sake. As long as it's artful pixel art I'm all for it these days. If it starts to looks sloppy like Whoa Dave!, I'll avoid it like the plague. I'm getting sick of blobs that are barely definable.
I...I...love it!
I'm buying this and Dead Cells.
@Tenakira thank you for the info. That's VERY HELPFUL
I saw the word 'Aegis'...couldn't resist.
I've been looking forward to this and am pleased to see the surprise Switch release. (It has come a long way since it looked like a simple riff on the look of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind ... )
@HappyMaskedGuy
i'll agree somewhat. i'm done with pixel stuff as well but i'm not much loving the '3d realism' that a lot of games try either. uncanny valley stuff just sucks and we still don't have the power to fix it. maybe in a few more graphics card generations but right now nope. they can keep upping the resolution but the characters and all still look awful. and the shiney on everything still sucks imo.
one reason i like what Nintendo does. i was really happy they didn't try to make botw look real. it would've been awful.
@sword_9mm Oh I completely agree, I am not a fan of the ucanny valley either. I am also not a fan of games that wish they were movies. I hate it when people justify rubbish gameplay with the excuse that it's 'more about the story'. Ha! Read a book. Game stories are fan fiction at best.
I want progress in terms of NEW things. Not necessarily more realistic. I play games to escape reality, to explore worlds which I otherwise am unable to set foot in, to feel things I couldn't otherwise feel.
BOTW wasnt new in terms of graphics, storyline, or even gameplay. But it brought a new definition to what it means to be a Zelda game (Zelda is practically a genre).
I don't think we will progress with retro styled games. It's done. I want to go somewhere I've never been already.
@HappyMaskedGuy
i do admit; i really like the hand drawn graphics of say stuff like cuphead. i also like what N does with games like kirby/yoshi. Unravel looks great as well (needs to be ported to the switch imo).
the new dragon ball fighters game looks great and much better than the last few imo. yeah still unreal engine (sick of that one really) but they actually used it well.
@sword_9mm The difference is, all of the games you mentioned do something new, stylistically in this case. I'm not saying all games need to be 'new', but the market for SNES graphic style games is overstaying it's welcome.
Ironically, this current era of retro inspired games will probably outlive the original trend from which they have taken (so much) inspiration. Unless we stop buying the bloody things.
This game looks great, definitely on my wish list
I can no longer hear or read the word "Aegis" and not think about Xenoblade 2. lol
