The Switch hype train continues to fill up with passengers with the tantalising news that 2D, classic Sonic-era-style platformer Freedom Planet might be somersaulting its way onto Nintendo's newest hardware. Well, either that or developer GalaxyTrail likes a good weekend trolling on Facebook...
It's certainly not beyond the realm of possibility since the game already appeared on the Wii U eShop back in 2015, boasting a very respectable 84 on Metacritic. It impressed us too when we reviewed it thanks to its Sonic-style aesthetic, hyper-energetic soundtrack and throwback character designs.
With its sequel, Freedom Planet 2, currently slated for a loose 2018 launch window, if the first game hits Switch and does well, we might even see its successor make the Switch to Nintendo as well. In fact, GalaxyTrail even stated it hoped to follow a similar launch plan to the one it used for the original. Check out its tweet below.
Now we want to know what you make of this little tease? Would Freedom Planet make a good fit for Switch? Have you played it already, if so, what did you make of it? Comments, one and all...

I got it with the the Nintendo Humble Bundle thing and it was extremely good. I think a sequel for Switch is a shoe in as this will sell well seeing the Wii U one did.
I had Freedom Planet on Wii U courtesy of the Friends of Nintendo bundle.
I thought the game was okay, I probably wouldn’t double dip but I’d be interested in the sequel.
Mostly I just want a new Friends of Nintendo bundle to come out.
@dom I do believe GalaxyTrail stated that Freedom Planet 2 will be going through the same release schedule as the original. PC, then Nintendo, then everyone else.
Hey @yummyhappypills - do you have a link at all? Always happy to adjust stories to make them better in the long run
One of the few indie games on Wii U that really managed to grab, and hold, my attention for a long time.
It was just sooo much fun to play and quite frankly the only thing I didn't like was how the story had a lot of stuff that just wasn't explained at all. Really digged the world and its characters.
Having this and the sequel for on the go would be absolutely amazing! ^_^
@Dom No problem man. This was stated back in the Wii U days, but I can't see why the plan would have changed given the Switch's position.

Was really unimpressed with the original. If you're going to make a Sega-esque platformer, you need to nail the physics and momentum for the gameplay to feel good. This was a game where I could slowly walk up the side of a wall, and where rebounding off springs and such was practically broken.
Thanks mate!
I never got it for Wii U so I would buy it.
More games? Yes please!
I'd be tempted, but with it going on sale on steam regularly for $7.50 I wouldn't snatch it up release day.
Got this game free with the humble bundle. Didn't play it much but would love another humble bundle.
Absolutely loved this game. Bought on PC and Wii U and will defo triple dip for Switch.
A physical release or a double pack of FP & FP2 would rock. I just want the game on my shelf (thats not a credit card style USB stick).
They'd be shooting themselves in the foot to not release this game for the Switch. The Wii U's install base has emigrated to Switch.
Got the first one on Wii U and love it.
Would day one a sequel.
For you Sonic fans out there, you would really get a kick out of this game for the gameplay.
(thing I hate about this game is the voice acting)
I bought a steam key for this game for 99p on ebay before knowing what it really was and the fact it was also on wii u. I must say its the best 99p ever spent. Feels very similar to sonic the hedgehog classic games its a masterpiece.
Sonic clones ?
But why is the cat green? Fun game otherwise.
Interested in the sequel, not willing to double dip for the first one, it's a good game tho
I played a little bit of the first one on Wii U (got it for free through Humble Bundle). It was fun and all but it didn’t really hold my attention. Now if it comes to Switch it’ll have to sit alongside Sonic Mania, which isn’t exactly an easy position to be in...
I really enjoyed it. Didn't get to play though it with the other characters unfortunately, just Sasha Lilac. Might have to fire it up on Wii U one more time, but I'd like a sequel.
I'll be really glad if they port it to Switch. Freedom Planet is one of my favorite games, and I was actually thinking of picking up a GPD Win to play it on the go. The last that I hear (prior to this article) was that their exporter, Chowdren, didn't yet support the Switch. I haven't found any new information on it, but maybe they know something that I don't.
Conversely, Freedom Planet 2 should be easy, since they're building that one in Unity instead of Clickteam Fusion (and they've talked about the limitations of Clickteam Fusion a number of times)
What about Grapple Force Rena? I mean...they wouldn't just put a poster of the game in the picture for nothing...
@AlphaJaguar I immigrated from the PC gamer scene.
Pls recognize
I would totally double dip on Freedom Planet if it came to Switch. I actually liked it more than Shovel Knight (as a retro throwback) AND Sonic Mania (as a Sonic-like). It feels like they took the level structures of Sonic, married those to a combat oriented control scheme that actually works well at slow speeds, and added in some of the best 2D platformer bosses I’ve seen. Great soundtrack too. Such a fantastic game.
@GC-161 "My geode must be acknowledged."
I bought this when it was on sale on Wii U, I really enjoyed it. After I played a good amount of it I was pretty much done with Wii U. I was thinking about getting it on PS4 but I never did. I could use this on Switch.
Never had the opportunity to buy this game, so I'd be down for Freedom Planet on Switch.
I somehow never saw this on the WiiU. I'm game for a Switch version.
The character voices were so terrible, I only watch a minute of the video - doesn’t bode well for actually wanting to play the game. The fact that it looks like a generic, poor-man’s Sonic doesn’t help either
Considering how many times I've played Freedom Planet already, I just want them to finish FP2 already.
I heard that Christian Whitehead is going to help out on the sequel to this game so if that's true then that would be spectacular. I got the original for Wii U but would be very happy if it also got ported to Switch alongside the sequel.
@Ichiyama It's "ACKNOWLEDGED" not recognized, you Simpson n00b.
I had lots of fun with this on the Wii U. I might double dip just to support GalaxyTrail. They did a great little dlc for A Hat in Time, as well.
This is a great game, really enjoyed it on the Wii U. Don’t think i’ll be double dipping but highly recommend it.
Played and completed Freedom Planet on the Wii U. As far as I'm concerned, it's better than Sonic.
That was a real fun one, and I enjoyed the variety of play styles with the 3 characters. The story and the voice acting though.... well it was pretty terrible. I know the badger was bad, I just think they would have been better off with no voices at that point.
My only real concern is that this might not get as much attention from me now that we have Sonic Mania. Still may try to get it or the sequel
I already got the original in the Humble Friends of Nintendo Bundle, and enjoyed it.
But I tried the demo for Freedom Planet 2 on Steam recently, and it seems to fix some of the problems I did have with the original, so I hope we get that one on the Switch as well.
Any deals for people who already bought it on Wii U? I bet not....
@Deanster101 if Wii u owners got it at a reduced price I'd buy it again. It shouldn't be an issue as it's all linked to the same network ID. But I bet the developers don't do it
@Bondi_Surfer I'd say it's better than the last few 2d sonics and if not as good as sonic 1 and 2
@Dom Hey Dom, they made a new post on Facebook. It sounds like it was just a joke (Freedom Planet on Switch... Physically on top of a Switch), and they haven't done any work on a port yet. But due to the response, they are looking into porting it.
The first game is one of my favourite indie games I've played. I actually enjoyed it more than Sonic Mania. I loved the music, gameplay, and story scenes. I'm hoping that the sequel will be just as good!
Thank you @Tim_Vreeland
At this point any indie developer worth the air they breath should at least be considering a Switch release.
Great game. I played straight thru this one. ( Over several sittings) but I played this straight thru, I almost never do that, I usually play about 3 games at a time.
I could be imagining this complketely but i feel like iv'e already read that it is coming a couple months ago.
