Halloween is getting closer, and we should expect some appropriately-themed games to grace the holiday / night / annoying day when the door bell constantly rings. Nicalis is stepping up with Knight Terrors, a title developed by FreakZone Games (which brought us Angry Video Game Nerd Adventures).
It hits the Switch eShop (North America and Europe) on 24th October and offers simple controls but arcade-style challenge; you have to dodge dangers and also destroy any creatures that come your way. A trailer and some PR blurb are below.
Knight Terrors depicts the horrifying adventures of a mysterious suit of armor known only as “The Knight.” Armed with a mighty sword and equipped with blood-red wings that allow flight, the Knight desperately races through the countryside in the darkest of the night, never stopping for any respite or consideration. He must face and vanquish a never-ending onslaught of bloodthirsty ghouls, flaming skulls and unspeakable horrors while jumping over spiked pits and flying through small gaps. If he takes three hits or allows three enemies to pass, it’s “Game Over.”
Knight Terrors goes straight for the jugular, engaging players immediately with simple two-button controls, retina-searing sprite graphics and frantic neo-classical chiptunes. Special effects like screen shaking and time stopping magnify the impact of every enemy interaction. Once you’re hooked, the game keeps pulling you back in with earned power-ups, multiple unlockable game modes and high score tracking. What’s more, the procedurally generated levels ensure unlimited replayability—it’s a different game each and every time you play.
Games like this can certainly be hard to get 'right'; it'll either be moreish and addictive or repetitive and short-lived, we'd suggest. We hope for the former, and both Nicalis and FreakZone Games have the pedigree to give us optimism.
Are you planning some spooky gaming sessions with this one?

Knowing Nicalis it'll probably cost at least $29.99.
This... I'll withhold judgement for now. But my first impression certainly isn't pleasant.
@OorWullie it's digital only so nope. It will be substantially less
The flappy bird gameplay is getting stale.
@OorWullie BOOM
Not got a Nicalis game yet and don't intend to. Unless they release Redout at a sensible price.
September last time I heard news on that front.
Looks like some mindless halloween fun. I'll get it if the price is right.
I hope they don't think sales will be great on the day Mario is also released.
Less ghoulish more garish. Looks throwaway to me.
This better be $7 or less, and then I may consider it. But I could just pop in ghouls and ghost or ghost and goblins and get the same basic game...with better graphics.
I’d buy that for a dollar. Literally that’s it.
"None shall pass".....
I'll pass on this completely thanks. I got bored watching the trailer I couldn't bring myself to play something as simple and boring as this. These games need to go away and die quietly.
Flappy Bird from hell.
@Syntaxkita do you mean binding of issac? It was priced correctly.
Price $30 I bet. Nicalis is way too overpriced.
@JJ286 nope it's digital only so it will be cheaper. Nintendo won't let developers change different amounts for physical vs digital.
@Syntaxkita currently the complete binding of issac sales on steam for 35.97. So less then a five dollar difference from the switch.
Just because it qualifies as a game doesn't mean it belongs in the eshop. So I'll pass.
@faint "Nintendo won't let developers change different amounts for physical vs digital" Puyo Puyo Tetris says hi.
@BezBot that's sega. Go to twitter and ask some indie developers. They will tell you the same thing.
I typically appreciate pixel art, but this looks a little barren. You call that a background? -_-
So Knight Terror is definately one of the unidentified titles on that pixelated Nicalis Switch home screenshot tweet.
Has the other one been identified yet?
This game somehow reminds me of the games on the ZX Spectrum 8 bit computer.
As long as there's some replay value, polished design, and fun for a good price why not?
yay more pixel art barf! (sorry i've turned into such a negative person these past few weeks).
Auto-runner, giant sprites, minimalist art design, too simple controls. I shall indeed pass, thanks.
@faint I was kind of joking with my price but I still expect it to cost more than it's realistically worth. I know Nicalis aren't just over charging Nintendo gamers though, their games are just over priced in general. Tiny Barbarian DX still costs $29.99 on Steam too and it released there in 2013. I just can't see how they can justify that amount for a game like that, regardless of quality. Same goes for Binding of Isaac, it may cost the same on Switch as other platforms when all the extra content is added up, but still, it's too much for the kind of game it is.
@NintendoRob1977 It's hitting 40 years, it does that to a man. 1 month today I hit that milestone. I'm assuming your 1977 means your birth year of course. If not then apologies
@OorWullie
THEN APOLOGIES > NO APOLOGIES! <3 thanks for making my brain go wild for a minute or two. Better than those generic pixel games (sorry, I view Pixel games to all else like house hunters view linoleum versus hardword floors)
The narrating in the video reminded me of Treebeard.
"Gnawing, Biting, Breaking, Hacking, Burning!
I would get it at a reasonable price.
I liked the voice over and trailer atmos but this isn't my style of game. I have Steam World and Stardiew in the list. Golf story to focus finish if I ever figure the frisbee..
Still, is your jame, get involved , the more games the merrier as far as I'm concerned.
The Terror was sitting through that trailer! "None Shall Pass"? I most certainly will "Pass".
Looks cool
@SLIGEACH_EIRE That made me chuckle. Nice one!
Ghouls n Ghosts meets iPhone
@faint we will see, Nicalis is overpriced and thats a fact.
Looks great to me, not an endless runner guy, but this looks more a shmup mixed with a side scrolling hack and slash/beat 'em up. Love the aesthetic.
Just another endless runner.
Looks extremely difficult; therefore, not fun. Pass.
