Remember Steep? Ubisoft's snow-based sports title was one of the first third-party games to be confirmed for the Switch, but we've seen very little of it since then, leading to rumours that it has been quietly canned while the French publisher focuses on games like Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle.
However, according to Twitter user @TW_PhantomLord - who is employed at Ubisoft - the game isn't dead. The following quote is hastily-translated from the original French:
No, it's still in the phase of optimisation. The framerate plays "yo-yo" so [it's] impossible to get it out in the current state, but the game is not [dead].
It sounds like Ubisoft is having some issues in adapting the game to Nintendo's console, but at least we know that the developer is working hard to ensure it runs as well as possible on Switch.
Are you still looking forward to playing Steep? Let us know with a comment.

I'd like to see an avalanche of 3rd party support. But there's probably a snowball's chance in hell of that happening.
Of all the 3rd party developers, I never expected Ubisoft to be the most prolific provider of Switch content. Good for them.
"Remember Steep?"
No, I'm a goldfish.
@SomeWriter13 Why not? They were the Wii U's biggest supporter and the Wii before that. Though watching their E3 conference, which was brilliant by the way, shows that their support isn't as strong this time around. That's likely down to the Switch's performance issues more than anything.
I'm still interested, as long as the price is right and isn't too Steep
I'll find my own way out.
Unless they offer some major unique features or updates I question how this game will sell well and recuperate the development costs that must have increased following the delays.
This flopped and it's not great ... I want reviews on Mario rabbids!!!
If this game had been released already I would have bought it. But at this point with ALL the new games being announced this game no longer has me interested at all.
I'm sure it'll be worth the 2000 copies it sells
By the time this comes out it could be a year old on other platforms and far cheaper. Plus it's not great, averaged about 7/10. Will Ubisoft reduce its price in recognition of these factors? Will they what? "What? Don't look at me like that. Switch owners need loving too. But they gotta pay! Giggity!".
Hope we see some footage soon (maybe in the next Nintendo Direct)
I've been holding off getting this for another platform for a while now! I know it received only average scores but it's a really unique idea and I'm all for supporting new game ideas!
@NintyNate The Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle review embargo lifts at 1pm(Irish time). I'm predicting it'll average about an 8. Though NL will give it a 10.
As long as it's released with existing and the new DLC due this winter the price will be fine. Anyone who says its a rip off even with all DLC is moaning for the sake of moaning.
I still don't actually see it being released though. Big shame as I wanted to play on switch
I thought I wanted this, now I'm not so sure.
@NintyNate Me too!!!!
I've performed so many 180s on whether I want this game I must have done a 1080 by now.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
"Will Ubisoft reduce its price in recognition of these factors?"
Nah, I'd say the price will still be pretty steep. I'll get out now...
I'm sure Ubisoft will iron out some steep problems that game has in terms of framerate. The Switch is indeed weak, but can be done right with well done optimization
The quality of the puns here went downhill fast!
I'm curious how they're going to handle their always online DRM shenanigans on the Switch.
Absolutely going to get this if it comes out.
Online or no online required, doesn't matter.
@Octane
This
I understand it's an online world, almost like an MMO for snowboarding... but they're gonna need to offer an offline option just because it's a portable system and people need to be able to play anytime they want.
If the game offers offline, I'm all in. The only reason I didn't buy it for other platforms was because it was online only. If they tossed in the new DLC that would be even better but that's not as important to me- just getting the offline option alone will put it head and shoulders above the other versions
@JaxonH It's an issue I have with a lot of Ubisoft games. For Honor was the same, and Skull & Bones will be the next one on that list. It's very off-putting IMO. If the Switch means that can't happen, I guess I'll get it on Switch instead.
And although I know the concept is kind of MMO-like, there is a solo mode in the game, but that requires online too. All these games will also become unplayable when Ubisoft shuts down their servers or support for the games.
It's monumentally stupid of them to have announced the port before they could manage to get a semi-decent build working.
@Octane @JaxonH Splatoon 2 does this well enough. Just close the doors on everything online when playing offline.
People should stop taking the piste with all the puns
@SLIGEACH_EIRE If only KT and SE brought their Japan only support over here we would certainly see a lot more products on the market.
I was never interested in this game. It being a full priced release again this late won t change that. Plus isn't this game microtransactioned to hell?
@ottospooky We've got a snowball's chance in hell of that happening.
I'm waiting for this game but please Ubisoft, take your time to polish it. I want a game without some flood of bugs the moment you release it !
Still waiting patiently to get this game on switch fingers crossed it turns out good.
I'm looking forward to it. Glad they're taking time on it rather than trying to rush it out the door.
If this came out near launch or even this summer I probably would have picked it up, but with Super Mario Oddysey, Fire Emblem Warriors, Skyrim, NBA 2K18, Rocket League, and more coming this fall I don't see myself getting this unless I can find it cheap.
Looking forward to it. I hope they don't kill the project if they keep getting problems with the frame rate.
The only reason Ubisoft would have canceled this game is if the Switch started selling as badly as the Wii U.
@NickOfTime90 The entire game requires an online connection. That's the issue.
@Octane my bad
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
They managed to support Wii U better than pretty much any third-party, I'm sure they can cope with the more powerful Switch. You could understand them steering clear of Switch as having supported Wii U relatively well means they'll have got burned by its failure more than others. Thankfully that's not the case with one game out and another 6 scheduled.
I just want the persistent online to not be required. Otherwise I totally want this game.
Tried the beta on PC, which can usually keep up with Xbox One settings (ish), and it ran like a dog. Glad they're putting in the effort though, they'll want to keep the positive momentum going as Mario Rabbids is being so well received.
I'd buy it if it comes out.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
You're almost always negative but damn it do I love your wit.
Good news.
Great concept game and i did want it but i feel its too late now and i have a load of games now and more to come later does it have a place? Plus the cost!!!
@Octane Agreed, the online only component literally killed For Honor for me. Like I was ready to throw my credit card at the screen during the e3 announcement and that just deteriorated to absolute apathy once they said it was online only.
@Ryu_Niiyama Yup, and as I just discovered, Ubisoft already demonstrated why the practise of their always online BS is absolutely awful. They announced that they are planning to remove content from Rainbow Six Siege in the (possibly near) future. Probably because they want to allocate their servers to a different game or something like that. We've entered the age where games will literally become unplayable after a few years, and it disheartens me.
@Octane Siege isn't even that old! (and I still haven't played it yet then again I wanted to play offline and I heard that is just bots and no story.) Does Multiplayer really have that big of an ROI? I may have to look into this.
@ottospooky Yeah, just when I think we've reached peak punnage it just keeps on snowballing.
But seriously, kudos to them if they are still trying to make this work. I hope it will be worth it in the end.
Would still rather have a new SSX game. I STILL play SSX3 on the Gamecube from time to time.
@Octane Always Online DRM isn't needed for Game consoles, unlike on PC due to piracy.
@Octane please can you explain how this game needs an online connection all the time. Are races only against online players? I am fearful that this game won't see the light of day and as you can tell from my avatar I love boarding games.
@Jeronan Consoles get pirated too, and you can still play games like Rainbow Sig Siege illegally on PC, despite their always online DRM. So I fail to see how this is beneficial to the community in any way.
@beazlen1 It's more of an open world-esque game where you can do what you want. It's a bit like GTA Online, but without the shooting and the racing, and just sports instead. You can probably join others in a race and things like that. You can also play solo mode, on your own. However, either option requires an online connection. You need to be connected to the internet, even if you play solo (the ''single player'' mode). Now the issue is that Ubisoft can't guarantee the Switch is always connected to the internet, since it's portable. So, assuming they don't change the game, you cannot play the game outside if you're not connected to internet. In the case of PS4, Xbox One and PC, the game is literally unplayable if your internet is down, because you need to sign in Ubisoft's servers when you boot up the game.
@Octane thanks for the reply. Much appreciated. So it's as I feared. Ubisoft better find a way to make this playable without internet or it's a no buy from me. I'm dreaming of a Ninty Extreme Racing package with 1080, excitebike and Waverace all on the same (huge) island (Wuhu perhaps). Then future DLC could be a RedBull Racing style pilotwings package...
I actually really want this on switch! Cmon ubi!
