In the madness of prepping for the Nindies Showcase yesterday we skipped by the Media Create Japanese chart results, but by popular(ish) demand here they are.
The big software arrival of the week was Monster Hunter XX on Nintendo Switch, but though it hit number one it performed poorly by the IP's standards - it shifted 84,277 units, about a tenth of the 848,467 units that Monster Hunter XX (Double Cross) sold when it originally came to 3DS. There are likely multiple reasons for this - the 3DS userbase was far higher, and the reality is that the Switch release is a HD port of a game that was arguably an 'expansion' in the first place. The appetite in the West may be high for MHXX, but in Japan there could be over-saturation. On top of that, a number of fans may be holding fire to invest their time and money in Monster Hunter: World on PS4 and Xbox One next year.
Elsewhere One Piece Unlimited World Red - Deluxe Edition had a relatively dire launch on the Switch, but in pleasing news Splatoon 2 passed one million physical retail sales. The top 20 (with lifetime sales in brackets) is below.
- [NSW] Monster Hunter XX (Capcom, 08/25/17) – 84,277 (New)

- [PS4] Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age (Square Enix, 07/29/17) – 22,600 (1,314,402)
- [PS4] Megadimension Neptunia VIIR (Compile Heart, 08/24/17) – 15,775 (New)
- [3DS] The Snack World: Trejarers (Level-5, 08/10/17) – 14,764 (137,972)

- [3DS] Hey! Pikmin (Nintendo, 07/13/17) – 3,226 (123,937)
Moving on to hardware, the Switch is back on top with a notable jump in sales, likely helped by the Monster Hunter XX bundle; there are week-on-week declines for other systems, however.
- Switch – 69,654 (22,277)
- PlayStation 4 – 20,433 (28,779)
- New 3DS LL – 11,470 (16,083)

- Wii U – 117 (151)
- PlayStation 3 – 83 (110)
- Xbox One – 63 (100)
That's it for this week; it'll be fascinating to see how Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle performs in Japan next time. [Correction: we thought this was a global release, but apparently it's not out in Japan until 2018]

Man, this game sure would well into the west.
So that's why sales dropped recently ? People were waiting for the MH bundle ?
If this would come out in the west, I'd think about getting it instead of World. But since I don't believe it will, I'll wait for World and after that I won't need XX.
@Tibob I don't think that's the whole reason. All sales for consoles dropped around that time.
So... much... want... I'd buy this instead of World any day!
I wonder what Capcom make of the Monster Hunter XX Switch Version sales. I don't think they're happy about the numbers.
@ThomasBW84 Fairly sure Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle doesn't release until some next year in Japan. Nintendo will also be publishing it.

Better bring this game to us soon Capcom. Glad to see Switch back on top.
The really interesting story, for me, is seeing Splatoon 2 move back ahead of both DQXI titles. What a phenomenon. I'm sure it's no coincidence that it ties in with a similar boost in stock of Switches themselves.
Disappointed MHXX didn't do better, but Capcom only have themselves to blame. A port of a very recent game, while the next instalment has already been announced for other consoles. Nice work. Now go dig the pellets out of your feet.
Mario x Rabbids doesn't come out until next year.
@Tibob no. Their was a switch shortage. It's a week by week thing in Japan
@NewAdvent it's a port of an upgraded port which is even worse
@roboshort This is last weeks sales
Please capcom bring it to the west now!!!!! But i guess i can only dream
@ThomasBW84 For some strange reason M+R is getting a 2018 release in Japan, so shouldn't be in the charts next week.
The Simplified Chinese version is finished and playable, but it'll take several more months before Mario's latest adventure is available in the language of his creator.
Given the close relationship between Ubisoft and Nintendo during the game's development, it strikes me as a bit odd, but there are probably important mysterious business reasons for the delay.
maybe i've been under a rock.... but is Splatoon2 really almost double the sales of Zelda????
@wariosmith apparently in Japan Zelda isn't as big as it is in the west
@wariosmith it is but zelda sells more in the west than japan.
Bring XX to the west, and I'll become very tempted to increase the number of Switch consoles sold by one.
(edited since old post was confusing)
@Krillin_ As far as Capcom is concerned, they got the sales they wanted from XX out of the 3DS version. The Switch version is pretty much just a quick and dirty way to get a bit of extra Monster Hunter sales out of the hot new handheld, nothing more.
I'm honestly surprised XX didn't do better than that.
ARMS IS #10. Eat your heart out Dragon Quest X. lol
@Aaron09 I know, but the writer said he is curious about how well Mario + Rabbids sells next time. But it doesn't come out here in Japan until next year.
@roboshort Oh really? Wonder why?
Bring it to the west ! Day 1 purschase for me
@meleebrawler I think Capcom was a little disappointed by its sales on the 3ds. But they only have themselves to blame for that.
Wow! Those are some seriously impressive figures for Splatoon 2!
Propably just too many high profile releases at the moment. Who can play all these games?
Maybe not the avarage japanese school kid or employee.
"a number of fans may be holding fire to invest their time and money in Monster Hunter: World on PS4 and Xbox One next year"
The number of people in Japan holding out for ANY game on Xbox One is a rounding error, making that one of the most ridiculous sentences I have ever read on NL.
Despite stock shortages Nintendo is killing it in Japan. Out of the top 10 games, 6 are on Nintendo devices. Also, that awkward moment where the Wii U and PS3 continue to outsell the Xbox One. Microsoft really have a hard time in Japan.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I read somewhere that Capcom only printed 100k copies of XX for Switch. If that's the case then these are fairly solid numbers.
I guess we really shouldn't be surprised by Monster Hunter XX's numbers. The game looked like an upscaled 3DS port and nothing more. Not to mention the next entry in the series looks far superior to it.
Monster Hunter in immensely popular in Japan. So I am not surprised.
Look at the poor Xbox One sales in Japan. Makes me laugh each time.
It gets outsold by both WiiU and PS3. Outch!
Yeah bring Monster Hunter XX to Switch in the west and that'll remedy the situation for them.
@NewAdvent Japan's fatigued with the 4th generation games (which reflected on XX's original launch sales of 850k). They've already got their fill of XX and Capcom is busy promoting World; I think the more distressing fact is that it only sold through half its shipment.
@mateq @tonyp1987 @jswhitfield8 @wariosmith Let's not forget there's another version of the game as well cutting into the Switch sales. Not to mention dl sales and who know how much that could be. For all we know Zelda could be over 1 million in Japan.
As for XX I know of 4 or 5 on this site who dl'ed the Japanese version so once again we don't know how many sold. That number could be well 100k.
The Irish clown didn't submit first this week cause switch had a massive uptick again in sales. Lol, pathetic.
Anyway, good results all around.
@Indielink except they print them based on pre orders
@CrazedCavalier I'd be more distressed at the World numbers in Japan. This is a game everyone in Japan already bought twice, presented a little better. But I still don't see a mad rush in Japan for Playstation 4's compared to Switchs. If XX SW sells poor and World blows off the doors it marks a transition for MH. But since I really don't imagine Japan embracing home consoles....pretty much ever again, slow XX coupled with almost certainly slow World sales in Japan could put Capcom in crisis mode over MH.
It's a port of an expansion of a game that was itself essentially a greatest hits collection of other Monster Hunter games. I know Capcom likes to iterate, but this may be one-too-many layers.
Still, if it came to the west, I'd buy it. Switch was born to be a Monster Hunter machine.
Lol Splatoon sold twice as many copies as Zelda
😲
Actually not that surprising but still interesting to see
It was never gonna top more than 100,000 in first week. Numbers are slightly disappointing
The Switch outsold all other systems combined. Splatoon 2 outsold both versions of DQXI combined too. It's pretty obvious Switch sales are determined entirely by supply; it went from selling 87,000 units two weeks ago, to 22,000 last week, to 69,000 this week.
Anyways, the week immediately following Obon is typically among the worst weeks for video game sales in any given year in Japan.
With that being said, at just over 69,000 units sold last week, the Switch just obtained the 4th largest post-Obon week for any system. The DS saw better post-Obon sales in 2006 and 2007 (weekly DS sales in Japan almost never dipped below 100,000 units from the launch of the DS Lite in March 2006 until the beginning of 2008). The 3DS also saw slightly better post-Obon sales in 2012, with 71,000 units sold.
Monster hunter has failed generation after generation on home consoles.
Monster hunter world will continue the trend.
@NewAdvent
Well, it's a port of an already released 6 month old expansion of an already releases 2 year old game. This is effectively the 3rd time people are buying it.
That and there's an install base of 1.5 million vs the usual 25 million for 3DS. Launch week sales of past games have been 1.5 million, give or take. Which is roughly 17x what we see here. But the install base is almost exactly 17x that of Switch.
Given the fact it's the 3rd time releasing this game, I'd say it's done well enough to match the 6% launch week attach rate of past new entries
@cyrus_zuo
Perhaps, but MH games on Switch can and would do well. This is just a port of a 6 month old expansion, which was an expansion of a 2 year old game- this is the 3rd time the game has been repackaged and sold to Nintendo gamers. And there's only 1 Switch owner for every 15 3DS owners.
That all said I was expecting it to do 125k.
World will do well on consoles. Maybe only 1 million on PS4 in Japan vs the 3 million 3DS entries saw. But it'll do well. A new MH on Switch will do well also. But it needs to be a new game, not a port of a game already released twice before. And obviously, in 2 years time there'll be 20-30 million Switch owners.
@Phin68
Don't think that has anything to do with it. They eat up 3DS entries which look far worse.
It just comes down to the fact it's the 3rd time people are buying the game, and the install base is only 1.5 million.
@rjejr I mean, yes and no.
You can interpret the sentence as, "players maybe holding out to purchase Worlds on both PS4 and XB1 in significant numbers on both consoles next year", or "players may be holding out to purchase Worlds - which will be released on PS4 and XB1 - next year".
The existing statement is techinally true, and does not state make any claims about how the sales will be divided between the two consoles. The number of people in Japan who will play the game on PS4 or XB1 in Japan must logically be greater or equal to the number of people who will play it on PS4. The fact that Worlds is coming to PS4 and XB1 (and not Switch) also seems worth mentioning in the article. It seems a bit harsh to call it "ridiculous" when it's technically true.
The Switch version of Zelda Breath of the Wild will outsell the Wii version of Zelda Twilight Princess next week (physical sales only) in Japan.
If you include digital sales, Zelda Breath of the Wild is sitting at nearly 620,000 sold in Japan, and will outsell Wind Waker within the next 3 months or so.
I wonder what those numbers would be if Nintendo didn't have the stock constraints...still good job!
Monster Hunter XX Switch version is an HD port of a 6 month old 3DS game that itself was an expansion to a nearly 2 year old Monster Hunter X. MHXX Switch was never going to debut to massive numbers simply because "it's Monster Hunter."
I knew XX would fail. The demo was awful - on a TV it looked like a PS2 game. Only way would be if they make is as a 29.99 eshop game.
They should just forget about this and focus 100% on MH world. That is the type of game you try and crack the US market with, not some half baked 3DS port.
@BensonUii Sorry, I should have been clearer. I meant that I'd be very tempted to buy a Switch console if XX got a Western release.
As for when I'll get one, Pokemon Switch has a release date of 2018 or beyond, though I might not wait that long.
@crimsontadpoles
Yes, add me too!
Me and TJ are playing MHXX now. It's actually way easier than either of us thought. Joey is playing too, and zionich... should consider joining us. We've got cheat sheets posted in the forum, and proven methods of which translation if/when needed.
I was going to import MHXX but after watching more reveals of MH World I just lost interest and didn't feel like doing the grind again with the language barrier. I still might pick this up after playing more games in my backlog though.
@JaxonH I've not bought a Switch yet, and I edited my earlier post since it was confusing people. If XX releases in English, then I'll probably bite and grab a Switch.
Are these individual sales or do they include the pack-in ,console edition people bought?
Doesn't really factor in number of download sales, limited supply of hardware in the region, and the fact it's an enhanced port of the 3DS game that many in Japan have already played to death.
I think the more interesting thing will be when MHW drops next year and how many copies it moves on PS4 given how weak the console market is there overall.
Just a couple observations:
1. Splatoon 2 targets a larger audience than Zelda.
2. Even though the MH numbers are down from typical 1st day sales, it's still doing okay for the obvious reasons.
3. Over on Pushsquare, they have yet to write about Japan's sales this week........wonder why?
Pretty obvious that a port wouldn't sell well. Look at Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. It didn't defeat the original in sales. Ports are great and all, but for a business they're the equivalent of 'the easy way' as in the result is parallel to the effort, as in poor sales. Disappointed.
Bandai Namco isn't going to be happy about this. I really hope it does better overseas, along with Pokken and Xenoverse 2. I don't want them jumping ship.
is an HD port, hehe
Of note: [NSW] One Piece Unlimited World Red - Deluxe Edition (Bandai Namco, 08/24/17) – 4,652 (New)
This version charted while the PS4 one didn't. Also Switch is at 1.5m on Japan while PS4 is less than 5m.
So yes Switch will have tons of Japanese third party support. Is just a matter of time.
@Yasaal IIRC, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sells better than the original in the same time frame.
@Yasaal
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is selling faster than the original Mario Kart 8.
@Yasaal @NinNin
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is selling well ahead of the original.
Mario Kart 8 on Wii U released May 29, 2014 and by September 30 had sold 3.49 million copies in just over 4 months.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on Switch released April 28, 2017 and by June 30 had sold 3.54 million copies in just over 2 months.
@electrolite77 @westman98 @NinNin I'd love to bring out the point that that isn't much of a change (not to mention the fact that the content is literally the same) but I'll accept my defeat on this point.
Bloody hell, the Switch is up and down consistently, more so than a slappers knickers. Got to say mh sales are crap regardless if it's a port of a port, it's not like there is another to choose from, should have done much better. Same thing happened to the vita with a old MH port, it sold poorly, it never left Japan, same will happen to the switch version imo. Capcom released a old psp MH for vita in the West instead, hmm it wasn't even a remaster, better than nothing I guess
I believe Nintendo has turned a corner regarding Switch production.
Bring it to the west! We will buy more than 100k
Ps. Put voice chat back in when you port it to west.
Been on board since MHTri, i need my fix in the WEST.
Please Capcom take my money, the wallet too !
So Switch sold near 70.000 units in japan this week. Up from just 22k last week. I don't think that poor last week sales was only cause Switch was out of stock and they were saving 70k units for next week. It doesn't make sense.
[NSW] The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Limited Edition Included) (Nintendo, 03/03/17) – 5,131 (571,163)
Was the Wii U version included in that number? If not, how much has it sold?
maybe just maybe all of Japanese gamers has alrdy play it on 3ds. capcom need to bring new stuff for switch. 100% I will buy a mh game that i haven't finished
@dimi
It makes perfect sense. If they've limited stock they'll pile it up and put it through retail when there's a big game coming out. Nintendo hate having inventory.
In Japan, the Switch sold 240,000+ units per month in July and August. LTD sales are now at ~1.53 million.
If the Switch continues to sell 240,000+ units per month from September until December, it will reach 2.5 million units sold by the year's end. Of course, that assumes there is no massive holiday sales boost, so in reality, the Switch should be able to reach at least 3.5 million (and possibly approach 4 million) units sold by the year's end. The Switch will outsell the Wii U and GCN's LTD sales within 12 months.
Maybe those "18mil production through March 2018" will get Capcom excited about stuff, but I doubt it.
With almost a million people having already played XX in Japan, how many would want to play it over again, anyway? I have never played a Monster Hunter game, to this day. Perhaps they should release this package in the West?
