Magikarp Jump is now available for download on iOS and Android in the west.
The Pokémon spin-off launched in Italy a short time ago before hitting Japan. Today, the rest of Europe - as well as North America - gets to see what all the fuss is about.
We gave the smartphone title 6 out of 10 in our review, stating:
Overall, Pokémon: Magikarp Jump is a fascinating package. It has great style, but it severely lacks in gameplay. It feels like the epitome of a generic mobile title with a Pokémon twist, which is somewhat unfortunate. With no gameplay other than feeding the fish and playing "whose stat is bigger?", there's just unfortunately so little to the game. It's definitely something fun to play on the bus or the train to kill time, in a style similar to other mobile games that have you looking after animals or buildings, but it just lacks the depth that we've come to expect from the other Pokémon mobile titles such as Pokémon GO, Pokémon Duel and Pokémon Shuffle.

Urm... I'll give it a go, why not. Will probably be swiftly deleted though.
I won't be going anywhere near that thing.
Does that mean Joe Merrick is part of Nintendo Life now?
It's great lol!
Fishing what ?
When's it coming out on switch. I'm willing to pay 6.99 because it's portable.
@RupeeClock Joe has been contributing to the site for the past few years
@Damo
Ah, so he's always been a part!
Cool !!! I`ll get it.
Interesting that they chose the Gen 6 chibi-esque character design route.
Decent, at best. It surprisingly keeps me hooked (no pun intended), but it's still just so...meh! There's a lot of grinding for sure, and its presentation and constant rewards keep you somewhat enticed, but it's just too bad you can't physically control the Karp's jumps. I'll pick it up now and again, but I'm sure I'll drop it soon.
EDIT: After a Pidgeotto swooped in on my Caleco Karp, I'm hooked. This game is actually quite addictive - but no money will be spent on it whatsoever. Whatsoever.
I'll get this lol
I think the best way to describe this is "interactive commercial". Any kid who plays this is just reminding himself to spend money on other Pokemon stuff.
People who put down junk like this are the same people who put down free junk McDonalds Happy Meals toys. It's all just ads aimed at kids. 5 minutes of distraction. Not everything needs to be $9.99 Super Mario Jump (or whatever it was called.)
For $10 I want a real game, this is the equivalent of a Whoopie Cushion or a fly in an ice cube, it's just momentary fun.
Played around with it a bit this evening, it's a fun little distraction, but certainly lacks any great depth. Now we just need to wait for the Smogon tier list and for them to ban the gold Magikarp because its too pretty.
My Calico Karp got got R.I.P King Karp I.
Beloved pokémon, it's you Magikarp.
Might give it a try someday when I need to kill time. And I do like Magikarp....
I'll give it a try sometime, and after I'll probably catch a Magikarp in Pokemon Y...
I had a gold Magikarp and then a Pidgeotto took him away mid-jump. I had never been so angry and sad at a pointless phone game. Good job Game Freak. Good job.
Tried this out. Kind of funny as a self-parody goes, but... Well, nothing stood out. I touched some berries, it ate them, I touched a button and saw a magikarp training montage... It doesn't feel terribly game-y. Honestly, I would've been happier with an offline idle game. They could still have the comedy, but players wouldn't need to be online.
