Juan Antonio Becerra - better known as Locomalito - has created some amazing indie games in his time, and Maldita Castilla is perhaps the best-known. Inspired by Capcom's Ghouls 'n Ghosts and set in medieval Spain, this action platformer has already thrilled PC players with its tight gameplay and retro-style visuals, and console owners have been given the chance to get in on the action thanks to recent releases on the Xbox One and PS4.
A while back we reported that publisher Abylight was aware of demand for the game on the 3DS, and it would seem that we won't have to wait very long to get our hands on it, as it's just been submitted to Nintendo for approval:
It's great to see that the 3DS is still getting support on the eShop, and having played the PC version we can say right away that - barring some complete disaster in the porting process - this will be an essential purchase. Do you like the look of it, or will you be taking your cash elsewhere?

That looks awesome!!
It looks awesome! I had no idea about this game!
Any eshop games not running at 60 fps is not worth buying. If a game is good, the dev will optimised it and make sure it runs at 60 fps. If a game is sh*t, the dev wouldn't even bothered improving it.
This better be 60 fps.
Absolute must-have. Hopefully we'll see it on Switch as well at some point.
Hi everybody!
We just want to thank you all for your comments and support!
Regarding the question of @Nintendian, we've been months porting the game to C++ (since Game Maker engine doesn't have support for Nintendo 3DS) to get the game running at 60fps in stereoscopic 3D
We've put much so much effort to bring you the best version of Maldita Castilla EX in your Nintendo 3DS. Of course, you'll be able to verify it by yourself!
@Nintendian That's your main concern for the game? It should be runnng at 60fps? F*ck the frame rate. As long as it is in stereo 3D and no major slow downs and some other game-breaking bug, it should be ok. The game looks awesome. looking forward to it, @Abylight.
@Abylight it does look great, but my 3ds is mostly retired. Any chance of a switch version?
@Donutman For now, we're focused on the 3DS version. After that, we shall see how things go
Looks Retro , looks great......will buy it in a hearbeat
@Abylight It's looking great so far! And the audio, you guys really captured the essence of mid-80's Capcom arcade music and SFX! (maybe a little too close on the SFX, I'm worried, LOL) Also, I appreciate you guys taking the time to optimize it for speed. There aren't that many games on the 3DS that run at 60FPS (unlike some folks here would believe), so adding Maldita Castilla to that list would be a huge deal!
Keep up the great work, I'm looking forward to it!
Count me in!
Never heard of this before but definitely interested, Getting strong Ghosts and Goblins vibes from it.
Edit* Just noticed its on PSN, Gonna buy it once I get home.
Is it difficult? I couldn't handle the rage of super ghouls and ghosts. Lol.
So, if these guys managed to successfully port a Game Maker game to a Nintendo system, what's stopping Undertale from doing the same?
It will be my first Ghoust n Goblins.
Looks good.
@Abylight I haven't turn on my 3DS in a long long time because of the tiny screen. But since Nintendo announce 2DS XL I'll buy that cause of the bigger screen of course and give your game a try. It sincerely looks good. Best regards and luck.
@Oscarzxn same here.
I'll wait for reviews but I do like the look!
Sweet Lord, that's day one for me.
Great work, @Abylight. Any chance we see Hydorah, Le's Abbaye or other Locomalito game in 3DS as well? Many thanks!
@Abylight This looks great. Thank you for pulling out the stops to achieve 3D + 60fps. I have a Switch too but quite honestly, given the choice, would still get this on 3DS for the 3D.
Sweet. I'd love to see all of Locomalito's games launch on all of Nintendo's systems.
Check out this wee article I did on him a while back, just to show you how much of a fan I am:
http://www.inceptional.com/2016/01/23/the-awesome-games-of-locomalito/
@Nintendian I have no idea if the company that's converted the game, AbyLight, has done its due diligence but Locomalito always puts his absolute heart and soul into every games he makes, and, until recently, he gave them all away for entirely free too--Locomalito's passion and commitment to quality certainly isn't in question.
Edit: Based on the response from AbyLight above, regarding the game running at 60fps and being in stereoscopic 3D, it appears they have done their due diligence.
@BispoSnake Our first aim is to bring you Maldita Castilla EX to 3DS. From there on, time will tell
By the way, thank you all so much for your words! <3
@Abylight Very happy to hear it's both 60fps and stereoscopic 3D. This could [hopefully] end up being the best version of the game out there.
@Abylight Loos awesome! First-day purchase from me!! Love the Quixote boss, as well as the Gandalf (look-alike)!
Can't wait! ^^
...yes!...definitely an essential purchase for me...looks great, thanks @Abylight !
good news! but I'll wait for a possible Switch version
Never heard of this, might check out
Looking forward to this Epic title.
I have a Switch as well a new 3DS XL , I am personally sooo glad this title is coming to the the 3DS first games like this look soo great in stereoscopic 3D there is just nothing else like it and for me HD is great but I'd pick 3D anyday over HD for a title like this . I have Shovel Knight on both my 3DS and Switch and it looks far and away better on my 3DS there are details in the 3DS version you see when using the 3D effect that you can't notice on the Switch version I much rather play Zelda Breath of the Wild or Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on my Switch games that utilize what Switch can offer in the graphics department but for me retro style graphics look way way better on 3DS.
This looks sick! Thanks to @Abylight for the responses and the good work. I'd prefer to play on Switch but now I'm thinking I should support you in the 3ds to ensure your future work comes to Switch.
