During today's Nindies showcase, Nintendo announced a new 2D fighter - called Pocket Rumble - developed by Chucklefish Games and Cardboard Robot Games. Visually, Pocket Rumble is reminiscent of games from SNK's cult classic Neo Geo Pocket handheld, specifically SNK vs Capcom.
The trailer shown highlighted eight characters, support for HD Rumble and a simplified two button controller scheme. The Switch Pro Controller is also supported, and online match support using the much-loved GGPO framework is available.
For now, that's about all we know, but we will have much more for you on these pages as Pocket Rumble approaches launch later in March - it's also a console exclusive for Switch, which naturally means it'll be on PC too.

The art style alone makes me interested in this game. Not that great at fighting games, though.
This could turn out to be a nice little surprise.
Definitely excited for a lil' neogeo throwback. This looks fun.

Aww, I thought Neo Geo was coming to Switch
Digging the art style, would need to know a lot more about the fighting gameplay.
Color me curious.
I'm not big on Fighting games, but this does look kinda neat.
Trash.
It does look just like a Neo Geo Pocket Color game.
most excited about this, love the zoomed in game play fighting graphics. looks good to me. switch is shaping up to be a console to have..now if only I could get my hands on the neon color..
I'm interested. If there's a single player campaign then I can't find a reason not to buy this.
Doesn't look particularly good imo, but if the mechanics are as deep as they say, then it could be fun. If it's got download play then I'm in.
This already looks better than Ultra Street fighter 2.
Right on. This will be ace in tabletop mode. Though this game really makes me pine for a new miniature handheld in the vein of a NGPC or, rather, a GBA Micro. You know, with modern features like WIFI and internal storage... Would never leave the house without one in my pocket!
I remember there being a stretch goal for the 3DS....was waiting for this to appear on the 3DS...at least it comes out on Nintendo I guess.
@TossedLlama All new designs but based on SNK's Neo Geo Pocket Color handheld fighting games. The game was originally funded via Kickstarter and has been on Steam Early Access for a good long time now. They were going to put the game on a NGPC cart too at some point but not sure if that's still happening.
This brings back some good memories. I loved the 2D fighters on the Neo Geo Pocket Colour. A great addition to the Switch lineup, we seem very spoilt with variety.
I love the art style.
@Yasume Thanks for the stunning critique. So insightful.
Console Exclusive indicates it is only on consoles. Exclusive means it is only one device.
Ah man, I've still got my NGPC kicking around somewhere. Samurai Shodown! 2 was great.
@readyletsgo NeoGeo games are coming: https://www.engadget.com/2017/01/13/nintendo-switch-neo-geo-games-waku-waku-7-kof/
They'll end up in this section if I were to take a guess, lol: https://www.nintendolife.com/games/switch-eshop/arcade_archives
If it's as good as the fighter that inspired it, apparently one of Jared Petty's [of IGN fame] favourite fighters (as I recall), it could be really good.
Good gravy I miss the Neo Geo Pocket.
What a unique game for the time. This one will be lots of fun on the go. If this price is $15 or less it will sell like hot cakes.
Oh, welcome back, non-Nintendo console exclusives, I almost forgot you even existed!
Best thing about this article was that it reminded me about my NGPC. I then wondered what the games go for these days on eBay. Turns out complete boxed copies of Rockman Battle and Fighters go for £130+. Score!
Looks pretty interesting! Big fan of fighting games in general, so I may give it a play.
Looks dope n fun day one for me.
@LiberatedAnimal
It really is.
Most "retro inspired games" go for the 8 bit look, although it seems we've phased into a 16 bit trend now (seriously, watching indie trends progress is like reliving the glory days lol- last gen was all 8 bit to 16 bit, and now we see the 64 bit platformers coming...).
But nobody has done Neo Geo Pocket Color... until now that is
Wow, as soon as I saw the screenshot I immediately thought SNK Vs Capcom: Match of the Millennium! I absolutely loved that game & would re-buy it if I could find a copy at a decent price... this could really fill that void for me!
The best thing is SNK Vs Capcom is that it was designed to work with a digital stick instead of a d-pad. This could be a great fit for the Switch.
Really excited to finally get my hands on this one.
Wait, there are people that thinks this looks bad? I think it looks like it'll be a fun fighter for the Switch. I'm kind of looking forward to it.
"it's also a console exclusive for Switch, which naturally means it'll be on PC too"
I don't know, I think mobile is far more likely.
This would be perfect for 3DS with stereoscopic 3d it would look sweet.....oh i forgot they dont do 3d on 3ds anymore
@starcatcher77 Nope, 'console exclusive' means it's only on one console, but also on other non-console platforms.
Looks fantastic, its silly that the digital indie games are the best thing on the system..........Zelda aside
But also great that there are so many good ones on the way.
Not that great for a company that has gone against the mass digital movement by creating a new console based on physical media.
@JaxonH For sure and I'm eagerly awaiting Yooka-Laylee. Did A Hat in Time ever come out on WiiU? Can't remember. It looked like a 64 era platformer.
@LiberatedAnimal Hat in Time is still not out yet. So they might cancel the Wii U version in favor for the Switch.
Edit: They confirmed at the moment they it's only coming to PC. Though it's not uncommon for Indies to be announced for other platform after it's PC release.
