Splatoon 2 will be hitting the Nintendo Switch this summer, it has been confirmed.
A full sequel rather than a simple update of the Wii U version, Splatoon 2 (not "Spla2oon", which is a shame) will feature new weapons and stages. You'll be able to dual-wield weapons and special items - such as jetpacks powered by ink streams - are also included.
True to the concept of Switch, you'll be able to play Splatoon 2 in a wide range of ways. You can play on the TV using the Joy-Con or Pro Controller, or play in portable mode. Thanks to the motion-sensing power of the Joy-Cons, gyro controls will be enabled every step of the way.

As was the case with Splatoon, updates will appear post-launch and in-game events will also feature.
Here's some detail from the official PR:
Traditional 4-on-4 turf battles return in this full sequel to the original breakout hit game, along with new stages, new fashions and new weapons such as the two-handed Splat Dualies. Players can compete on the TV or on the go. Whether they use the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller (sold separately) or Joy-Con, players can aim their ink using gyro controls. Splatoon 2 supports both local and online multiplayer matches. The game will also support voice chat using the new Nintendo Switch smart device app (a free, limited version of the app will be available this summer), and will add new stages, fashions and weapons after launch, as the original game did. Splatoon 2 is scheduled to launch this summer.
Are you excited yet?

Looks awesome!
It looks just amazing. Can't wait until the Treehouse later today
Much better than a port. I'm very happy about this.
when Nintendo said "you'll have to pay for online play," I was like "no thanks, I pass."
when Nintendo said "Splatoon 2," I said "TAKE ALL MY MONEY AND BLEED ME DRY."
I never played it, but wanted try so much. I loved the trailed and hoped for 3DS port, but nothing. Now my wish came true! Except I will have to pay some extra now to play it online, but well... it's Splatoon! <3
Nintendo should totally make more corny commercials for this.
Also, it's going to be super fun.
LOOKS GREAT. SO HYPED
Sadly, though Splatoon was a day 1 purchase that I thoroughly enjoyed for the next several months, the chance of my getting this one is relatively small thanks to paid online. I know it will be free for the first year, but I won't be getting the Switch until at least that long after its launch. Unfortunately I cannot afford an additional monthly charge.
I am so glad they did this instead of a port. I'll be picking this up day one. Fine Nintendo...I'll start paying for online ...sigh.
Sooo excited. Splatoon is one of my favorite games ever.
Glad it has a bit more time to bake as well with content being rolled out like last time. Summer of Splatoon 2 is an event. Which might be needed given that there are so few games coming!
There was a storm cloud of ink!
I honestly didn't expect it to be a sequel. It seems like a very short turn around. Nonetheless this looks extremely good!
Soooooo excited for this. Did not expect a sequel. The hair, the weapons, everything looks so good lol. Local multiplayer is also a huge win, I really have missed that.
@Ryu_Niiyama
Online ? Like FF XI or FF XIV ?
Mine wants one....Oh my goodness gracious! Ink me up and call me squiddy.
I love Splatoon. Local multiplayer is going to be great!
Always wanted to play this... just not on the WiiU. Pretty hyped about some competitive gaming on the go.
Looks amazing!
Looks great. Where are Marie and Callie
Could've been called Spla2n but oh well. Looks awesome and I can't wait to try out the new weapons.
Glad the gyroscope controls remain. I was worried about the first trailer as it looked a bit laggy, but everything shown in this second video looked very smooth.
No one is excited about voice chat? Interesting move throwing it to smart phones but it makes some sense.
So much news dumped on the official pages. Bomberman, prices for all the accessories... I need to sleep. lol.
Looks even better than the first! And Summer is an excellent time!
@aaronsullivan I don't think anyone saw the voice chat. There are people complaining about "Nintendo's crappy online" as if they were charging for the same service as currently on offer.
@aaronsullivan my brother and I just facetime while playing online ranked matches
@Ryu_Niiyama Yeah, info is flying fast but it's actually in the italic game description text in this article.
I saw it in the description of the service on the official pages and then came to post and saw it was already up in the article so I didn't see it at first either.
Anybody else notice Marie was in funeral clothes at 1:29 in the video?
With paid online I think I'll just stick to regular splatoon on Wii U.
I'll buy it when it goes on sale.
I like the name they went with. Spla2oon sounds like a bad joke my dad would make when he's trying to pretend to be cool.
I'm really glad we are getting a proper sequel to one of my favourite games on Wii U, Splatoon. Admittedly ever since the first game stopped support, it's not as exciting to go back... I still enjoy it. But hopefully Splatoon 2 will get lots of attention from Nintendo! It looks wonderful!
It's pretty much everything I wanted in a sequel.
I'd love if it gets a longer single campaing. I didn't buy the first one because single player mode is important to me, and from what I heard, in the original Splatoon it was barebones.
@Luna_110 Multiplayer was obviously the meat of that game, but the single-player campaign was surprisingly fun. The final boss is one of the best of all time in my opinion.
If only we didn't need to pay for Wi-Fi play....
Hype level through the roof!
Nice to see it isn't a port but we're gonna have to pay to play the bugger online now :/
Unless the local play is very, VERY satisfying, paying to play online with the system is a dealbreaker for me for this game. I already play online multi-player on just the PS3, Wii U, and the PC because paying for online on the Xboxes and PS4 makes no sense and serves no justifiable benefit to the consumer.
Apparently PC and mobile games are the only options now for modern systems that offer quality online gaming if you don't want arbitrary, monthly, and fairly steep utility fees. Every console manufacturer has fallen prey to the allure of free money which some people are willing to pay for reasons I cannot comprehend (And if people are willing to pay them for no reason, why wouldn't they take their cut? Sigh...).
There's plenty I saw that I liked about the Switch's line-up, but paid online really dampened any enthusiasm I had.
Didn't had a chance to play the original and it is not my type of games BUT I have no doubt it is a great game and very happy to see a modern Nintendo IP succeed like this.
I don't have a smart device and will not be buying one just to chat. This is not innovation Nintendo!
Looks great. Loved the first game. I'm not sure it's worth the price of a new game plus the subscription to play online. Plus, in order for me and my two sons to play together, I will need to buy 3 games, 3 systems, and probably 3 subscriptions.....that sucks. They want to say they make decisions based around the "family", how about making it affordable for families.
I love those new (main, sub and special) weapons!
And they finally incorporated those tubes (or what do you call them?) from the singleplayer maps!
Still unsure though if I'll ever accept getting ripped off just to play Splatoon online. Sure, I would also play MK online, but really, Splatoon would be the main reason.
I still can't believe they will be charging people for nothing.
@Mk_II You don't have to. I assume you got a PC/Laptop, right (if not: how else did you write this post? ^^)? Then you can just use Discord, Teamspeek, Steam or other services.
Me, I don't care about voice chat, I don't want it, I don't need it (unless with friends and then I can just call them on the phone or use Steam). And I certainly don't regard it as innovation.
@dkxcalibur Huh, why 3 games and 3 systems? It has local multiplayer now, you'll only need one game and one system (and no subscription).
@DanteSolablood Why not? It plays absolutely fantastic on the Wii U.
@Megal0maniac Basically I never bought a Wii U & considering the Wii U is around $50 more than the Switch... I probably won't.
@shani it has local multiplayer if each player has their own Switch and game. Did I miss something?
Gyro confirmed! Exhale
@dkxcalibur Hm maybe I misunderstood this part in the Presentation: https://youtu.be/Ntzz8O7SpWs?t=1899
There it says "VS Network Play" and "VS Local Multiplayer". I assumed Network Play would actually mean playing in a (albeit wireless) LAN with multiple Switches, while Local Multiplayer would mean playing against each other on one Switch with a splitscreen.
But after taking a closer look I think I just misunderstood that part of the video...
