One of ongoing debates prior to the unveiling of the Nintendo Switch was the company that would ultimately supply the GPU; reports pointing to NVIDIA were countered with suggestions AMD would get the nod, especially as the latter has had a lockdown on consoles for a decent period of time. With the Switch, ultimately, Nintendo has opted for a bespoke variation of NVIDIA's Tegra technology, which is currently at the centre of reports around the system's capabilities.
In any case, those surprised by NVIDIA securing the contract are likely focused on home consoles, but the company's been enjoying dramatic growth in recent times. This is laid bare in the graph below, and it's this extraordinary growth that's led to the company being named the Yahoo Finance Company of the Year.
Yahoo's article is an interesting read, and it's quite interesting to note that the Switch is a small enough part of NVIDIA's broader business; it doesn't even get a specific mention in that article. NVIDIA is at the cutting edge of artificial intelligence, for example, driving the technology behind services from Google, Amazon and Netflix among others. It's made major strides in computing and technology in cars, all the while continuing to increase its revenues from the high-end PC gaming space. Nintendo and the Switch agreement are, of course, contributors to the company's ongoing gaming revenues.
It'll be interesting to see how the NVIDIA and Nintendo relationship progresses; in early November company President and CEO Jen-Hsun Huang described the Switch as an "incredible game console", also sharing his belief that it's a "relationship that will likely last two decades".
We're getting close to the Switch making its mark, in any case - 2017 could be a hugely exciting year.
With thanks to @bobmrik for the heads up.

Well, this is interesting...
I'm sure I read a few commenters on here saying Nvidia were desperate and would offer chips to Nintendo at really low prices.I think some people get their "facts" from the Youtube comments section.
I think this is the first time I've seen @rjejr get a mention for a story!
I'm excited to see what the Switch can do.
I'm willing to bet that even being a portable device that sucker can run some serious games.
Modern architecture can do wonders, and this has been a long time coming.
I was just going to ask how's their stock price doing? But it looks very healthy.
I'm no tech expert, but from what I've read about NVIDIA since the Switch announcement I'm very pleased Nintendo have chosen to partner with them. All that matters in the end though are the games.
I love my NVIDIA Shield TV; I use it every day to stream my PC games, or use it as a media/ emulator box. And soon I'll be owning another NVIDIA product with the Switch. So I'm quite a fanboy of the company, atm.
@JaxonH
I still heard some people around me underestimate the power of Nvidia. They said Nvidia was an ancient tech, compared by ps4.
@Anti-Matter
And yet if PS4 used Nvidia, they'd be saying the exact opposite I'm sure.
Nvidia is world class. So is AMD really. They're both good and both have excellent products. It's all about bang for your buck though. How much power for what cost, and striking a balance.
Nvidia has great chips though. Anything custom from them, pushed to its limits in a console, is gonna yield good results, of that I have no doubt.
I'm excited because Nintendo stuck with that GC based hardware for so long. Was great for its time but... they needed to modernize.
@GravyThief Me too !
Nvidia is pretty swell.
I was glad to see they got all the kudos from Yahoo.
Nvidia + Nintendo = NintenVidia or NintenVidya games coming out the Yahoo!
I really hope that Switch has incorporated Geforce Now and the AR capabilities from Nvidia. Since they seem to no longer be interested in their own Shield, it would make great sense to utilise these services to some extent.
To think of a revamped VC with streaming services, all on top of digital purchases and their own online gaming network..... it sure would please a lot of people, as well as offering a solid alternative to current consoles.
Then there's that whole cloud computing thing......
They are a great partner for Nintendo!!! if things go well we could even see Nintendo release a super powerful machine next time around, nvidia defenity have the ability and experience for a project like that
Before you guys get too excited, Switch is not really that fast.
PS4 is 5 times faster than Switch based on specs, that makes PS4 Pro 10 times faster than Switch. Good news is: Switch is faster than Wii U.
@Nintendian
Based on rumors. Let's wait for that discussion until January 12th.
I'm not tech savvy when it comes to video cards, CPUs and all that stuff, but I can say that Nvidia's program to control its mobile cards in a notebook is far more user friendly than AMD's. I must have spent a couple of day looking at tutorials in internet about how I could use my PC with the dual graphics configuration.
@Luna_110
The specs came from Digital Foundry, a reliable source.
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2016-nintendo-switch-spec-analysis
Switch has around 400 Gigaflop of horse power when it's docked, but when running on battery it has 200 Gigaflop.
PS4 = 2 Teraflop
PS4 Pro = 4 Teraflop
Nvidia 1080 GTX = 9 Teraflop
@Nintendian
And both are rumors, for a console that Digital Foundry may have info but still hasn't tested.
I'm not saying it isn't true, Eurogamer and DF have a good track record, but I can't say it is true because the only official news of the console is a 3 minute teaser. That's why I prefer to wait.
@Luna_110
It really doesn't matter regarding the speed. For a portable console it is more than fast enough. As for a home console, Nintendo games are good enough... 3rd parties will likely port their PS3 gen games over... it won't be fast enough for PS4 games.
Even running on battery Switch is faster than Wii U, so the New Zelda has no problem going portable. When Docked to the TV it runs twice as fast to support HDTV 1080p resolution.
I will buy it no matter what, Nintendo games are what I cared about.
Good to hear. I'm a long time customer of their GPUs and I've never been disappointed. ...Kinda like Nintendo.
I thought that Yahoo was dieing? Oh, and your information isn't save at Yahoo. They get hacked all the time!
@Yorumi
And their new Ryzen CPU is beating Intel's best chips in recent tests. I'm finally happy I can go AMD again for my CPUs after 10+ years early next year. I'm also getting AMD's 2018 GPU to replace my 1070ftw card and they have better recording software then Nvidia now (not that that matters as OBS blows them both away).
I am not a fan of the current fanboy mindshare that Nvidia and Intel currently have and will rub my hands gleefully in delight when that mindshare eventually gets broken. Even when AMD had the superior GPUs (5 and 10 years ago), dips still went Nvidia. :/
@ollyander Actually, for a better more powerful console (which won't be happening with Nintendo's current course of staying cheap), they'd want to use a custom AMD AM4 APU a few years from now which will be quite a few times better than the hot garbage (save for the cutdown 480 in the PS4 pro) that's currently in the Sony and Microsoft consoles. I highly doubt Nvidia will have the chops to keep up with Intel and AMD in the SoC department a few years from now.
@Nintendian And yet I remember another video from DigitalFoundary showing how how many Gigaflops a graphics card has isn't indicative of it's performance.
Not to mention that Nvidia is typically better with optimizing drivers with Directx11 than AMD, because they invested a LOT of money into Directx11. So if Nvidia handles drivers like they do with PC games (assuming the games use Directx11) then I think we will see a big boost in performance.
Just wait for the benchmarks on games to come out. Knowing the specs doesn't mean the system will definitely more or less powerful, it means you have a general range of power for the system. And don't forget...the Switch is primarily focused on being mobile with a 720p display, not 1080p. Sacrificing that resolution boosts performance quick a bit.
@Nintendian
I will wait for specks from Nintendo as much as I respect digital founday. But I look at the size of it and think "that can't be as powerful as ps 4 for a marketable price" ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ‘½ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ’€ðŸ˜“😓😓ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ‘»ðŸ˜“ðŸ˜
Ps: how do I apply for the position of forums alcoholic
