Today, somewhat out of the blue, Nintendo released Swapdoodle in North America and Europe, a spiritual successor to the long lost Swapnote / Nintendo Letter Box. As the name suggests it allows you to swap messages in doodle form with friends, even doing so online provided you've registered the relevant chums.
As you can see in the video below, it's packed full of lessons, ink colours and stationery.
Nintendo of Europe opted to post a handy breakdown of all the DLC options, which gives a good idea of what you get included in the free download and what the paid extras have to offer. The details are below:

Do you think you'll be buying much of this DLC, or just doodling around for free?

I wish I had friends who had 3DS so could actually use this app but it's cool for those that do
Just doodle for free
Yeesh... You could get a retail 3DS game for all that, it looks like.
What the heck is a premium pen? Huh, this is interesting. I just don't see how the same thing that happened to Swapnote won't happen again.
@YouSeemFRAZZLED Thanks for the info.
I wish they had posted the prices in $ too. Oh well I guess I'll have to download it and look after work
@MasterWario It'll be hard for them to pull it if people are PAYING for it.
For the record, the "lessons" are better for tracing the subject, not drawing them from scratch using basic shapes. This ain't no Art Academy: Nintendo All-Star Edition.
@allav866 If you press the up or down arrows, the trace outline will be replaced with a grid or you can leave the bottom screen completely blank.
If the Nintendo Premium Pack and Sparkling Premium Pack have the same price but Sparkling Premium Pack has a ton more stuff, why would anyone buy the Nintendo Premium Pack?
This is actually quite a fun little app. Shame it'll be dismissed by many as being pointless.
My goodness what does that add up to?
Did EA or Activision publish this?
Apparently Nintendo's so far down the DLC well they can't climb out. Disgusting.
@XCWarrior Nintendo. Dlc at its best
lessons?
Nintendo, could you just release pictochat again with some 3d functionality and the ability to talk to friends online? I miss it loads lol.
So in total that's £50.24 for all DLC's!
@XCWarrior This game's free. For an EA or Activision game, you'd get a half-complete $60 game with a $50 season pass and micro transactions, with a side of free bugs and glitches.
@MasterWario The premium pens look to be special colours - gold, silver etc, but also blue violet and hot pink; essentially anything other than base colours.
The ink diminishes as you draw/write, but it does say that it refills when you start a new note. The packs include more ink and I'm hoping that means more ink per note and not that it runs out. That really would be too much. I'll try it a little, but I'm not yet convinced.
@MasterWario Well from what I can see this won't allow actual pictures like Swapnote did. Sure there might be some great artist out there that could do the same things but I'm hoping people won't take the time to do that.
If this had released months after Swapnote then I would be all over it but years......no thanks, I've moved on!
I won't be using it, but I don't think this is the worst idea. Not many people would pay for all of this DLC if it was one premium package, but enthusiastic doodlers might spring for one of the packs which probably justifies its publication in the first place.
Why is there no bundle pricing? I could see $24.99-$29.99 for this, like the Art Academy games on Wii U and 3DS, but $50+ is absurd, in my opinion. I want the complete experience, but not for that price :/
@XCWarrior $51.85 in the US, I added it up and wrote all about it on the earlier article this afternoon, more of an overview than a review. US also got the silver pen set for free, so maybe $53.84?
And I made a snide remark about people complaining about $9.99 for SMR, that's a steal.
These prices are a load of Swapdoodle.
Please do not support these microtransactions folks!
@MasterWario You can't take photos. The most you can do is in-game screenshots.
The problems in the first place were the photos.
Wow that is a lot of additional features! I will likely get the Zelda sets for the stationary.
...After I recover from my little $1170 surprise car repair today. I just wanted an oil change too....
'S what they call a wife-swapping party in Cool World.
If I had more friends this would be cool.
Good lord. It might have been best to roll out DLC once a week or so rather than day 1, but I suppose I'll pick up some Splatoon for now.
Eh its free, the "micro-transactions" rather DLC isn't necessary, although I'd argue if you want to get good use of it you'd want to buy at least one of the premium sets for 6.99.
Micro-transactions are not a good choice of word here as this really is DLC, there is no time delay, or little 0.99 items to help you write faster etc... this is really just to add to the experience of this app.
@Ryu_Niiyama the mechanic's micro transactions!!
So I see you got the Season Pass Collectors Edition bundle for your car, yeah?
Remember when Letterbox / Swapnote was completely free for everything?
@Sonic200012 I'll support this DLC if I want to. And guess what? I do.
@MasterWario You can't share photos taken on your 3ds in swapdoodle. That's what brought swapnote down.
I'm going to wait and see if MyNintendo will add any of these to their rewards. But I'll probably be waiting a long time because MyNintendo adding something I want happens once every 3 months.
I just downloaded it. Not a fan of DLC pricing schemes in general, and the system here seems a bit pricey as the lessons seem fairly basic.
I appreciate that the main part is free though, and that's important so that you can send your messages regardless of if the receiving party has paid anything. Would be nice if some things, like message storage, increased even if you buy some of the smaller packs. The initial 300'll last for a bit, but I don't think I'll need to jump +3000 messages when the need does arise (by buying one of the premium packs, that is, it'd be nice to have an intermediate / cheaper option). Offhand, I personally prefer just buying a couple of the smaller packs instead, in which case it'd be nice if more of the core stuff (storage, ink usage) unlocked based on total amount spent on the app, not necessarily buying a specific pack.
I'm primarily just glad Swapnote is essentially back (w/ online so you can actually send and share messages). It was a part of the reason I bought a 3DS a couple years back, and I've been hoping for it's return.
...Whoops..this was supposed to be on iOS..
Bring back Swap note!
@Spoony_Tech me too......Bring back Swap note!
I've downloaded it, played it for a while, sent some really bad drawings to some friends... and I've really enjoyed it.
It's just a shame that it's essentially Letter Box / Swap Note ... but this time you have to pay for everything.
I think they may've taken it away just so they can bring it back and charge us for it!
But... I can finally send messages to my 3DS friends again. Wow. This is awesome. This should have been in a 3DS stability/system update... a system feature built in to the system, like the browser, miiverse, etc. Oh well.
@TerrapinJess Then I had to go back because it was making noise when I left. Noise it didn't make before l dropped it off. They fixed it though. I can't get mad. I bought that car in college and this is my first major repair. Just not what you want when you are just trying to get one thing done and go to lunch. I got Toyota DLC. The please don't break down pack. Lol.
Nintendo couldn't even be bothered to put the date the right way round for European gamers. And they want us to give them money for extras? Hahahahahaha! Clearly Kimishima doesn't think Europe matters as much as Iwata-san did. Oh well, Nintendo, I'll just give my money to companies that actually make an effort.
So how come the Nintendo Premium Pack and the Sparkling Premium Pack boast the same price, yet the Sparkling one has LOTS more stuff in it...? Really much more.
@RainbowGazelle Yes, but iirc you could get some stationary with Play Coins. Ninty doesnt seem to remember those eh? What ever happened to trying to get people to walk or take their 3DSes out with them and encouraging the use of StreetPass? No, they go for the microtransaction route instead.
I picked up the Animal Crossing one for that pink pen (and the starter pack of course!)
So, instead of removing the photo option or banning users who sent the illegal imagery, they made the free app unusuable for everyone owning 3DS.
And it only took them 3 years to release a replacement.
And because Nintendo goes with the times, they put micro(or rather macro)transaction in it.
And they removed previously freely featured pens & stationeries and made the app as bare as they could, so the microtransactions appear tempting to an user...?
And on top of that... they put "lessons" into it to exuse the purchasing more stationeries?
Well... Good job?
@Obito_Sigma You pay for Nintendo mark. I bet many people would choose anything with Nintendo in the name, than something with yadayadasparklingsomething, even if it's obviously better. Hence the higher price: they know it will sell.
I got the Nintendo premium pack...and am tempted to get the Mario Kart set.
It's a bit expensive but Nintendo stuff is usually good value and high quality.
I'm glad Nikki is finally off the dole though.
Feel free to add me anyone and swap doodles 😁
Too little.
Too late.
Too expensive....
Can you record and attach your 3ds sound clips to your messages like in swapnote?
@BensonUii No, I like how it is now. I've already bought both Premium Packs and I'm content with what I have.
Maybe I'll buy more, maybe not, but I do know I like the option.
lol no ta. On Letterbox I took the time to build up enough play coins to buy all the extra stationary and a few weeks later they took the app offline. Luckily it was just my time I wasted. I'm not spending real money on all this lot only for them to realise in 6 months that people are still using the app inappropriately and take it off again. They should have a play coin option at least. Remember them? Play coins? Seems Nintendo doesn't now they have the ability to make real cash usable.
Although the Zelda stuff does sound tempting.
I got the two premium packages. Might end up getting basically everything in the end, time will tell.
The fact that things like different sized pens, ink capacity, and on system storage space are locked by in-app purchases is terrible. SwapNote had all that and guess what- It was all free.
These features have no reason to be locked behind a paywall, especially a $6.99 one. That's insane. If it was two bucks I'd consider biting but I'm not going to support this at that price.
I assume the lack of photos and the fact that young people can't get this unless the parents pay and state they'll watch how the child uses it makes this round safer. Here's to hoping some old friends get back intouch and My Nintendo offers ink colours as rewards.
@rjejr I Know it's optional, but the total amount should not be more than $40. At that point you might as well just release it as an eshop thing for $25. Though who knows how much it might sell.
@Spoony_Tech Well that sucks, because I've already sent you a pic I drew yesterday. I won't send you anything more now though, since you don't want to DL it.
@Freelance Well if it has some use as in reconnecting with old friends then maybe it will be worth the dl.
Looks very cool!!
@Peterjr1 here, here
Why couldn't they just reinstate swapnote. All they had to do was take out the photo sharing option and add in the new bits.
@Windy agreed! How have been haven't talked to you in while
@Zain160 its been a weird year Zain. Lost family members this year and about to lose a beloved pet we have had for the last 12 years. Its been a rough year. But........2017 is going to be awesome. Take care sorry I havent been around over at Blue Rogues.
@Windy dang sorry hear about your lost man. I will be praying for you man. It fine man trying to keep in touch with ya and everyone from the blue rogues
@Zain160 thanks Zain.
Appreciate that ~SwapNote is ~back, free, and with core online message sending functionality, though...
Upon further review the DLC is overpriced, as it essentially amounts to buying different color pens (which takes practically 0 programming effort to include).
The colors offerings per package are also a bit bland, sometimes offering the ~same color as one you already have and not a good variety. Why not offer a pack of just pens in basic colors (i.e. blue, yellow, and green)? Increasing ink limits and message limits are nice, but they should not be tied to a specific package, but rather, it should've increased based on total money spent, so that buying any lesson would bump it up to at least some degree. I'd like to support Swapnote but I'm having a hard time justifying the prices for the offerings, as I don't want to support bad DLC practices.
More lessons like Nikki's Fairy Tale Friends and Dollo's Cats and Dollo's Dogs. Also a FREE Dollo's Nintendo Switch Lessons!
