Yooka-Laylee's Q1 2017 launch seems like so far away, and the latest trailer for the game - shown off at Gamescom 2016 today - makes the wait even more difficult.
Not only does it showcase some gorgeous level designs and new enemies, it gives us a look at one of the duo's transformations - a massive truck with a snowplough on the front. We also see how some timely underwater flatulence can help save the day - pity Sonic the Hedgehog didn't think of that back in the Mega Drive era, as he would have died a lot less on level three.
Give the trailer a watch and let us know how you think this gorgeous, Rare-like adventure is shaping up.

I hope they realize that fart gas contains no oxygen. They would not be able to breathe in that bubble.
Posted this in the forum an hour or two ago. And sent the link to you guys. It looks fantastic.
I hope this comes to the NX
The music is interesting. EXTREMELY reminiscent of The Sorcerer's Apprentice.
Anyway, this looks awesome. Playtonic does what Nintendon't.
Farting ?! O.o
Okay, i have watched the trailer.
Ew.... A Shield / Water Bubble from a Fart ?
LOL. Kinda smelly and hillarious. XD
Btw, the scenery looks nice.
I wish the main protagonist are humans in Chibi form...
Looks great, can't wait.
@abbyhitter It isn't certain that Yooka and Laylee breath oxygen at all. Who knows, maybe they breath methane?
Says Wii U, but i think its will be released on NX too.
@abbyhitter While we're keeping it scientific, it should also be noted that bats and chameleons CAN'T actually transform into trucks.
@Ralizah I still can't believe that a company that basically invented the 3d platform has nothing to show on the Wii U and no 3D World doesn't count people!
Just think of the potential of what Nintendo could do but at last, they only do 2d games these days because they're cheaper cash runs and quicker to design.....
@Ventilator Hopefully it will be anyway,it would make a great launch title for the NX Eshop.Imagine having BOTW,3D Mario and Yooka Laylee all there to play day one on your shiny new console.I wouldn't know what to play first.
@Spoony_Tech Yeah. The lack of a proper 3D Mario (or some sort of equivalent) is the biggest hole in this console's software library. What a missed opportunity.
Glad I backed this one. Sadly can't try the toybox since I have no PC (and no, I'm not giving it away)
Loved Banjo 1, 2, and evem Grunty's Revenge was pretty good. Pilot was ok, but multiplayer racers are better on a console. Nuts and Bolts...i kept losing interest in...only one I haven't beat
@OorWullie I would love for that to happen but since Playtonic is doing all the designing on the Wii U I highly doubt it will happen. The only way I could see this happening is if it ports easily.
This looks like the sort of game that will remind older players of some of the classics from their childhood, and become a classic for younger players in the future... so it should gain a decent amount of popularity.
Kind of modern-retro.
@Spoony_Tech It's nice to imagine Nintendo have been smart and contacted them already and said "Hey we'd really love this to be on NX for launch,can we make it happen?"
@OorWullie : Same here. When NX is launched, this game is still as good as brand new.. unless it releases after NX.
@OorWullie To be honest I don't see 3D Mario happening until like November/December 2017 at the very earliest. Nintendo likes to spread the gap between 3D Mario and Zelda (SM64 in 1996, OoT in 1998; SMS in 2002, WW in 2003; TP in 2006, SMG in 2007; SMG2 in 2010, SS in 2011)
@abbyhitter
You're talking about a game where a lizard (Chamelion) and a bat talk and work together through various things, even transforming to stop the evil bad guy and you're looking at how farts don't contain oxygen? lol
This game does fill a massive gap in the WiiU library, and stirs up the nostalgic feelings of child-like excitement I haven't had since early titles on the Wii. I can't wait!!!! I'm pretty sure this is the first time a third-party game has elicited a greater level of anticipation than any first-party title on a system.
@OorWullie Your mistake was saying Nintendo and smart lol. I agree though, not only a launch title but how about exclusive retail!
"...And Farting"
Wait, what?
BTW, I love the music in the background!
The new Banjo Kazooie is looking good
Man! Nintendo should buy them.
This game looks already better than banjo kazooie
@SLIGEACH_EIRE [removed]
Let's keep it civil here guys - Octane
I love that they've went full meta and have a pair of googly eyes as enemies that attach to inanimate objects and then use them to try and attack you. I see what you did there Playtonic!
@Grumblevolcano Yep,that's probably how it'll go as history shows.It's just previous comments from Miyamoto saying he wants the next Mario to 'usher in the new era' that I'm kind of clinging to and also with the position they're in,they need as successful a launch as possible,Zelda and Mario will give them that.Then again,he said back in June 'Maybe next E3 we'll be able to share something.' so unless he was just being secretive,it pretty much guarantees Holiday 2017 at the earliest.
@Spoony_Tech I was going to add something along the lines of 'with exclusive features,possibly an amiibo too,making it the best version' but thought I was already stretching it saying Nintendo would be smart haha
That looks very good. I was a bit sceptical at first but now I can see it.
This is why I love Nintendo life; they keep me up to date with what's happening in the world of Nintendo.
Are there any jobs for a reporter? I'd love that 😌
This looks really good. Can't wait. Also seemed liked there was less frame drops than in previous trailers. Still needs a bit of work there, but there's plenty of time to fix that!
Nothing like some good ol' fashioned toilet humor from the original Rareware developers to really get me laughing.
Also, I think this game's looking better with each trailer. Can't wait to play it!
Hopefully the final WiiU version will look this good. Should the big N snap them up and make this exclusive to NX they'd be on to a winner, sure to sell a few more consoles. Loosen them purse strings I tell you!
@Spoony_Tech "they only do 2d games these days because they're cheaper cash runs and quicker to design....."
Looks at Yoshi Wooly World reveal trailer, Jan 2013; release date in US, Oct 2015, 2 1/2 years later. Can't get much "quicker" than that.
I agree though, SM3DW was a very linear 3D. No Mario 64, Sunshine or Galaxy, no 3D DK or anything else. Yet Skylanders keeps rolling out 3D games year after year that sell well on Ntineod consoles, Lego keeps making 2 or even 3 games a year, (though they seem to have stopped this year to go all in on Lego Dimensions, which I spent another $30 on yesterday for 4 sets at Target) so there must be a market for the 3D games that Nitneod basically invented.
Though I suppose for arguements sake we should mention Ninteod Land, which had Zelda, Metroid and Pikmin in 3D, and some other vs. minigames, and Pikmin 3. Nintnedo Land would have had an amiibo follow-up on Wii that would have played like Animal Crossing on Wuhu Island, not that AC:aF nonsense.
So hopefully, all those Wii U game sequels that should have come out this year and next will be on NX next year. So few games on Wii U, they must have a truckload ready for NX.
I'll get this game in a Steam deal for sure!
Off topic: as someone pointed out, Nintendo should have presented a beefy amount of gameplay for some of the NX launch titles at this GC...
Nope, not gonna look at it. I want to play the game completely free of spoilers.
@MowMow789 likely undedicated people who talk the talk, but can't walk it.
The hype is real
It definitely looks to be coming along a lot better than I initially thought it would. Maybe it will deliver of some of that classic Rare magic after all.
Can't wait to get this on NX!! Looks great.
It's interesting to see all of the people being put off by the fart noises. That kind of humor was all over BK, so it's not a surprise to see it here.
YAY!
It bothered me in the last trailer and it's bothered me again now - why don't the large rings have an animation when they disappear?! It's a small thing, sure, but it's a detail I'd expect to have had attention paid to early on in development in a game with this level of polish
@ldp "a beefy amount of gameplay for some of the NX launch titles at this GC..."
Gameplay? I'd be happy with a list of 5 titles at this point, and maybe a couple of screenshots. So far Zelda, also on Wii U, and Just Dance, even on Wii, is hardly giving a reason for anyone to buy an NX, regardless of what the hardware is, it needs games. Lots and lots of games. And all we have are last Gen ports, not 1 single exclusive.
Even this game hasn't been announced for NX yet and it releases near the launch. NX needs games. 1st party, 2nd party, 3rd party, 4th party, 5th party, I don't care who's party it is just get the system some games and tell people what they are so they can be excited for NX and not buy those games on other systems.
Looks awesome, can't wait....
@samuelvictor I'm guessing that the farting bit is a tiny poke at or tribute to Conker's Bad Fur Day, which also had plenty of that tongue-in-cheek juvenile humor. But other than that, this is shaping up pretty nicely, I'd say...
@Kirk Well it better have that classic Rare magic: 90% of Playtonic consist of the original members of Rare, so I'm willing to bet that they've got that feeling more than nailed. Music and all...
@ThanosReXXX Or a reference to farting out eggs in BK
Fun fact, when people think of farts they usually associate it with methane gas as did I, but:
"A typical fart is composed of about 59 percent nitrogen, 21 percent hydrogen, 9 percent carbon dioxide, 7 percent methane and 4 percent oxygen. Only about one percent of a fart contains hydrogen sulfide gas and mercaptans, which contain sulfur, and the sulfur is what makes farts stink."
So theoretically there is some oxygen to breathe in that bubble, though it wouldn't be recommended. Anyway, we're talking about a fantasy game where reality is suspended. I mean c'mon look at the game and its premise. It screams wackiness.
@samuelvictor Give me a heads up if you got that (now) deleted message. Also give me a heads up here if you've sent a message to that address, since I don't always check that account on a regular basis.
@Anti-Matter
Well this is made by the people who gave us such, elegant, mature and refined bosses like The Great Mighty Poo.
Is it bad that I immediately noticed the mistake where it says Sonic would have died a lot less on level 3? Is it worse that I created an account to point this out? Level 3 is Spring Yard Zone--not a drop of water to be seen. Level 4 is the water level.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE True. I suppose the mistake is even weirder because methane doesn't even cause the smell. I also read that farts may have up to 26% of methane (depending on diet) and the amount of oxygen may be less than 0,1%. I suppose we need to study Yooka's diet before making any conclusions. Of course, Yooka isn't human, so as far as we know, it could have farts that are 100% oxygen.
This is science! And totally exciting as well!
@abbyhitter Actually, the chemical composition of a flatus (the scientific term for fart) is largely the same as the composition of the air we breathe, just with some additional hydrogen and methane from bacterial activity. So there are breathable proportions of oxygen in it, though obviously in real life the amount of gas passed wouldn't be enough for a lungful of air...but we are talking about a game where an anthropomorphic chameleon and bat turn into a bulldozer, so some suspension of disbelief is called for.
I'm hyped too play this.
Guys, it's essentially Rareware we're talking about.
Does the farting really surprise anybody?
@Spoony_Tech Apparently everyone but you got the memo about Nintendo having shifted development of almost all of their Wii U games to NX like two years ago, and that one of those is a new 3D Mario game. But now you know, so you can stop posting this particular type of comment.
Oops, never mind. I read the rest of the comments and it seems that @rjejr also did not get that memo. But this is a guy who can't be bothered to spell "Nintendo" correctly, so it's not surprising that he overlooked something like that.
I've said this before, but it bears repeating;
gon b gud
@Tempestryke
Ew...Please, don't mention that name. >_<
@Anti-Matter
Sorry
@AlexSora89
Nope
@rjejr I really don't get what's going on with Nintendo. Breath of the Wild looks great, but an entire E3 showing only it. If Nintendo wants to keep the NX a top secret thing, it's okay. But they'd show us some games. Unless the NX is so innovative that it doesn't run games...
@-DEMISE- But I like that argument. As for any 3d platformers I'll believe it when I see them.
@Captain_Gonru Lego Dimensions is getting the Lego Batman Movie stuff, probably early in 2017.
Avengers came out early this year, last summer was Jurassic World, before that was Batman 1, 2 and 3, Lego Hobbit, Lego Marvel and maybe 1 or 2 others. There are currently NO announced stand alone Lego games, which is the first time that has happened in years.
I have kids, we follow the Lego games, and wait impatiently for a Lego How to Train your Dragon, that series - 2 movies, another coming, and TV show, would be perfect for the Lego treatment. And all of the current HtTYD games suck.
@ldp "Unless the NX is so innovative that it doesn't run games..."
NX unveiled. That's a joke by the way, in case you missed the

@Diortem 0_0
@hieveryone What?
My most anticipated game by far, even more so than Breath of the Wild. It's been years since I was so excited about playing a game.
Finally, a colourful, imaginative world to explore that encompasses all ages. Can't wait. It'll be incredible.
Hopefully it triggers a new trend and demand for imaginative 3D platformed style adventure games.
I don't count Mario 3D World because it never had a 3D hub world, and all of its levels were essentially little individual obstacle courses, rather than proper worlds to explore. The New Super Mario Bros series is ignored completely
Nice trailer.
@samuelvictor I'm not the only one then. Clowns always made me cringe more than laugh too.
@samuelvictor
As @Tempestryke agreed with me on, Rare was also known for getting a lot of crap past the radar (a term coined on Tv Tropes, look it up). So yeah, there was as much mature stuff as there was a lot of innuendo. Did you know about a certain terrain pattern in Banjo-Kazooie?
@samuelvictor
Fart jokes can be funny if they're timed just right.
@Captain_Gonru "Does LEGO have the rights to them?
How to Train Your Dragon? Probably not. But the videogame of HTTYD2 was 1 of the worst games Iv'e ever played. IT wasn't just bad, it was 100% misleading, the movie are was on th ebox but there was no movie connection to the game, just flying dragons in circles around their island. That franchise so needs a good videogame. It really does.
Back from vacation, only 130 emails to go thru, not so bad. And 49 of those are from mid-July. Doesn't look like I missed anything on here, though I do need to decide between a PS4 Slim or a Neo now. Nintneod needs to announce a Sept 8th NX unveiling pronto.
@samuelvictor
Fart jokes are like cars - use one well and you can accomplish a lot of good stuff, but a slight misstep can result in disaster.
