The Pokémon brand is so hot right now thanks to the incredible success of Pokémon GO, so the race is on to produce the live-action Pokémon movie while the hype train is running at full steam.
Legendary Entertainment is partnering with The Pokémon Company to launch the first live-action Pokemon film franchise with a Detective Pikachu movie. While we've watched our fair share of horrible movies based on video game characters over the years, it looks like Detective Pikachu might be in safe hands as Nicole Perlman and Alex Hirsch are in negotiations to write the script for the movie.
Perlman has penned comic-book smash hits such as Guardians of the Galaxy and Thor for Marvel, and she's currently working on the script for the upcoming Captain Marvel film. Hirsh created Disney's cult favourite animated series Gravity Falls, so assuming that the negotiations go as planned it looks as if the Detective Pikachu live-action might turn out to be a critical success in addition to (hopefully) being a commercial success.

Gravity Falls writer?

As an uncle to nieces and nephews I've been forced to endure watching The Disney Channel. The vast majority of programmes on there are pure tripe but Gravity Falls is absolute class.
Two of the most amazing sources in recent years I reckon. Guardians is a LOT of fun, and Gravity Falls had a unique charm that was enjoyable on its surface, but also had a huge amount of depth with its easter eggs and everything else. I am 100% on board with this!
SO MUCH OF MY YES
i'd luv to play the game first before i consider whether these guys are suited to give it justice.
Gravity falls, on the one hand, heck yeah. On the other
A good indication that the game may be coming westward. I hope they stick to the sonorous tones of the Japanese version for the voice acting.
Those are some great movies! Love Thor and GotG. Never cared for the little bit of Gravity Falls I've seen, but no biggie.
NO....!!
(Facepalm)

Ok, it might be good!
Howzabout releasing the game in the West first?
@Sakura So you are not in the Danny DeVito camp then? Lol
It does seem that I am like the only person on the internet who thought GotG was incredibly boring and generic
groan And they've confirmed my worst fear that Hollywood has their grubby unwashed post-bathroom hands wedged deep in the pie. American cultural imperialism ahoy! What could go wrong?
And so goes any interest that I may have had in seeing this. I'll probably be coaxed into seeing this by my genwunner ex-fan friends, but I have otherwise no intention whatsoever of seeing this. I'd much rather see any of the more recent anime movies instead.
News like this makes me wonder why didn't disney persuade the film rights?
@GrailUK Well, I just hope they don't go with a high pitch squeak!
Well that makes failure seem impossible.
@Tlink7 Maybe because it's not.
Just give us the game already!!!
That's great, that's great. I really like both of those things, so this has me excited...but what about Danny Devito!?
Actually a word of caution, this is the writer of the first script of Guardians of the Galaxy, not the final version of Guardians of the galaxy. Though Alex Hirsh is a huge Nintendo and Pokémon fan, he has met Ken Sugimori and got a signed Pikachu from him.
Gravity Falls is amazing.
Let's see what comes out of this.
So does that mean Disney's putting their name on it?!
Eh. I'll believe it when I see it. Too many video game movie projects are announced and never seem to go anywhere.
@EmiMacthePC No, writers are contracted by studios to create scripts (as far as I know). In this case, the writers who previously were contracted for Gravity Falls and GotG could be contracted to create the script for Detective Pikachu.
....
Gravity Falls.....
Alright, I'm aboard the hype train
Seriously though Gravity Falls was amazing with its seemingly kiddish looks but great depth upon examination. The story, the easter eggs, everything! Plus all the stuff it referenced xD
If Alex Hirsch does become a writer for the film, I'll definitely be looking forward to this.
Oh and I loved GoTG as well, so there's that.
Let's see if this truly bears fruit
Just make a live action adaption of gen 1 like pokemon origins but good. Gen 1 baby !
Two great things in one.
This should mean that the movie will be made with care.
Gravity Falls? Yay!
Guardians of the Galaxy? Boo.
I would like to see Daphnes Johansson Hyrule cover the song "I'm on a boat".
Preferably with toon link as star guest.
A movie based off one of my favorite videogame franchises of all time, being made by the creators of one of my favorite movies and cartoons of all time? Sign me up!
Get ready for a hella white washed movie LMAO. If y'all lucky they might hit you with A half white half Asian lead!
@ya_boy_six The Pokémon franchise doesn't all take place in Japan, so I'm not sure how it can be whitewashed if the characters weren't necessarily Asian to begin with. Heck, they might just have original characters in this movie.
Sounds exciting.
I've just never been able to get into Pokémon, despite all the hype circling around it, but Alex Hirsch did a tremendous job on Gravity Falls (of which I am a big fan, if my profile pic and username didn't make it obvious), so I may have to keep an eye on this. As someone else noted in the comments, Alex seems to be a big Nintendo fan, and as such he's sure to put a lot of heart into something he must be passionate about, and not just some corporate bigwig using a popular IP to make a quick buck.
@mystman12 I'm mentioning you here to make sure you see this whenever you get back from your Internet hiatus.
This would be amazing then, I hope they do the CGI well. Or stick to anime if not. I love Gravity Falls and GOG plus Thor is incredible.
Holy poop this could be amazing if it actually happened
Alex Hirsch writing a pokemon story based around mystery.
Yeah, guy does great all-ages mystery. Literally the best (cause Gravity Falls, that's why). I want this.
I love Gravity Falls.
@Megas75 Censoring the word doesn't work on here...
Seeing Hirsh's versions of presidential candidates as Pokémon, I'm 100% behind him being on board an actual Pokémon project.
@Tlink7 Fear not my brother, you are not alone. I too found GOTG to be 'meh'.
Haven't had any compulsions to watch it again.
@ya_boy_six Y'all assume too much bro
@PorllM It is a piece of entertainment, and seeing as what is entertaining to people varies, there is no absolute when it comes to its quality. To me it was just generic super hero plot number 1542 with a villain who is evil because he is evil... and they just made all the aliens blue/red/green humans. Boooriinggg
i think the creators had japan in mind when making poke'mon..pretty sure.
but hey, worked out pretty well for white goku in the dragonball z film.people loved that.
