Last week we reported on a cancelled game by the name of Epic Donald, a spin-off from the Epic Mickey series.
That wasn't the only canned "Epic" title that Disney was working on - another game in the same universe would have borrowed elements from Nintendo's Mario Kart series to create a unique cartoon-style racer.
Epic Disney Racers - also referred to as Disney Rides! in production materials - is little more than concept artwork and sketches, but even from these we can tell that it aimed to resurrect the team-based setup seen in Mario Kart: Double Dash.
It's not known what system this game would have released on, but the Wii would have been a fair bet. Would you have been interested in such a game, had it made it into development? Share your thoughts with a comment.

SEEING THIS MAKES ME CRY. This looks awesome! So sad.
I don't know, I've always had a soft spot for cartoony fun racers. Kinda reminds me of that Mickey Mouse Racing game from Rare.
Aw man. My wife and I would have probably loved this. We love Disney and Mario Kart.
It's done... and by rare!
Mickey's Speedway!

As much as I typically dislike Mario Kart rip-offs, I would like to see the return of the co-op from Double Dash.
I don't know....I love the art style, but the kart racer genre in general needs to do something new to get me back. I passed on both wii and wii-u's mariokart because they both felt like a step back to me from double-dash and mariokart DS.
I would love to see someone try out boss battles again, but maybe with local co-op. If you go all out, maybe even take on an MMO-style trinity class system (healer/tank/damage) to race 4 on 4 through dungeons cooperatively with one person trying to absorb hits for the group, another literally throwing heals on the party, and two damage per group clearing the way to the end boss fight. Show the ghosts of the other group as you go, but have some enemies/items along the way to impede the enemy team's progress.
Try an improved team system for the main game arcade-race mode, or rhythm-based sequences inspired by rayman legends, but as a kart racer. Combine the open world racing elements of diddy kong racing with the objective-based races of Freaky Fliers. The genre really needs development.
Sometimes we're better off not knowing.
Hm... wonder if that will be released for Real.
Scrooge on a motorcycle with the nephews in the side-car...why this game was even cancelled?!
@Randomname19 Because Disney Interactive shut it's doors in June
I swear I used to have a Disney racing game on PC when I was younger...
I found it! Video is PS1 version but there was also PC:

That looks so nice so sad...
@Peterjr1 Would that happen to be Toontown? It had a racing segment.
Well looking at this is just sad since this will probably not ever be realized again. Looked pretty cool actually. And Oswald and Mickey were working together again, using their Epic Mickey powers xD
Disney has been closing games for quite some time, Toontown, then Epic Mickey, Disney Infinity..... -_-
@LasermasterA I found it its this: https://youtu.be/A17w_K20J6Q
@Peterjr1
Oh alright xD Never heard of it before actually.
Seems nice though! Very Mario Kart-ish.
make it dlc or exclusive content for mario kart nx.
It's a shame there haven't been many good Disney games in the past several years.
Seems like a missed opportunity, probably would of played quite well.
I remember hearing about this way back
Scrooge letting his nephews toss bags of money off the side of his vehicle like weapons?
I SEE WHY THIS WAS CANCELLED
Guess its time to go back to the original concept art for the next game!
Sad to see... but happily, I see quite a few Disney influences on many MK tracks (Thunder Mountain, Haunted Mansion, Sugar Rush from Wreck-It-Ralph, Space Mountain, etc.).
Too bad the Epic Mickey series got shut down... The first two games are amazing!!
@Peterjr1 Ah man, I loved this game as a kid. Never really beat it nor unlocked all characters, though.
I definitely would have been interested in this game. Disney characters just about mean as much to me as Nintendo ones, so as long as it would have gotten decent reviews, I would have tried it out.
Scrooge racing with Huey, Dewey and Louie aiding him.
My eyes are not wet, shut up!
WAIT A SECOND.
IS THAT DONALD'S 313 MICKEY AND OSWALD ARE ON?!
I liked Mickey's Speedway USA. I definitely would've enjoyed this.
If it was as good as the Sonic racing game on the Wii U, let alone MarioKart I buy the new slim Playstation 4 to play it on.
Thats kinda to bad. Though I hope they would have thrown in some characters like Benny the Cab with Roger Rabbit, Launchpad McQuack and his airplane, Baloo and Kitt in the Sea Duck, Don Carnage, Darkwing Duck on his motorcycle...
X3
@World Knowing Scrooge, it was probably fake cash anyway. XD
@Xaessya
What is that?!
@Tempestryke Its the original concept art for the original Epic Mickey.
Which looks like if Five Nights at Freddy's was made by Disney
@Xaessya
Ohh.
Thank you for the nightmares Disney. Didn't think you had it in you anymore.
@Tempestryke Haha, he WOULD, wouldn't he?
(Probably paying them 10 cents an hour too)
@World
Lol Stingy old Duck
scariest thing is...it doesn't look all that bad.
@AlexSora89 Yes, that DOES appear to be a Belchfire Runabout.
Well I did enjoy Epic Mickey quite a bit but I really doubt that this game would have held a candle to Mario Kart, as most copycats are usually passable but nothing extraordinary. Still makes think about could have been though...
@PigmaskFan
Not just any Belchfire, it's the 313, plain and simple. And I love it.
Loved the Epic Mickey franchise shame it did get canned as there was a lot of potential in it.
@flightsaber Actually, both were a big step forward from Double Dash, especially MK Wii.
The only step back was the missing double-karts, but those were non-existent in the entries prior to Double Dash too.
And what do you mean by 'trying out boss-levels again'? I don't know any MK game that had boss-levels.
And I don't think a team-based MMO mode with dungeons would work. It goes against the nature of races, they are a purely competitive thing. That's why team-races are always so boring in MK. It basically takes the 12 places and makes two places out of them. That makes the whole race pretty uninteresting.
The one thing that made Mario Kart successful in the first place was the fierce competition between racers, be it between friends or total strangers. Take that away and you get the most boring game in gaming history.
That said, I'd love if Disney had made a Double Dash rip-off. I-m still waiting for a Double Dash DLC for MK8 and I don't get why Nintendo have passed up on the chance to make one.
On paper this sounds great, but every time a developer says they're releasing a "kart" style game it sucks in comparison to Mario Kart....or at least in my opinion. If Disney put the same efforts into video games as they do on the parks and films, I think Disney video games would be awesome! Their properties are some of the best.
Also, I personally did not care for either of the Epic Micky games.
@shani I know Mariokart for the wii had motion controls...I didn't notice much else that was different when playing with friends, though. It's a good game - all the mariokarts are - it just wasn't different enough from what I already had to justify a purchase for me. Something like freaky fliers (story-driven, mission-based kart racer) or diddy kong racing (open world) felt like they tried to do something beyond the battle mode/grand prix. DKR DS had a barebones track editor, and that would also be something that would pull me in to mariokart NX if available. For me, the series just needs....something that makes the newer entries more fun to play than older ones. I'd like to see them experiment with new secondary game modes, without cutting grand prix or battles that they've already perfected.
Mariokart DS had boss battles as part of their single-player challenges. It was experimental, and I really enjoyed it. Then it never happened again.
I think we both agree that team based modes are weak currently. My proposal for higher drop chances of defensive items that draw hits to yourself instead of teammates, attacking items, or items that protect/recall stragglers (healing role in a racer?) based on class in team modes in a two-instanced competitive race might be going too far. But as in in Mariokart, team modes don't really feel like teams - I race pretty much the same way I do in single-player. If specialization isn't the answer, maybe some experimentation here couldn't hurt.
I love Epic Mickey! I would of bought this game The designs are cool; I would use Cruella as my racer LOL
