As you've likely noticed Nintendo games tend to have fun and silly secrets. That's part of their charm, of course, and it keeps us busy with games long after they were originally released, one example being Super Mario 64.
Well, for your amusement our video man Alex has been looking into some of the secrets in this classic game and found a few that included cute, angry and transforming animals, among other things. It's only part one, too, which means there'll be more secrets in the future; yeah, we know, it's almost too much to handle.
So, check out Alex's vid - with a few cheeky lines - below.

there are so many great 3d mario games that could use an HD upgrade and this is high on the list.
I'll live without knowing them. Probably know most of them anyway.
Ok
About the butterfly trios, two of them are always bombs, and the remaining one is always a 1UP. Which is which is decided randomly.
@JHDK not really... For home consoles (the only real 3d games) there 5 total 3d mario games and one is very recent. So that leaves a total of 4 games and id argue the galaxy games are still too new for that treatment. New games, not remakes!
Even when there isn't anything new to me, I just love Alex's videos
@JHDK remaster this remaster that... mario 64 is charming, looks fine and is great fun. no need.
Did not know the water level trick... anxious to go try this now
@LetsGoRetro 64, sunshine and both galaxies. all 4 would be awesome if they got the twilight princess treatment.
you wouldnt be interested in HD galaxies?
Not sure if I'm imagining it, but I seem to remember you can catch a fish in mario's pocket in the little pond outside the castle. Am I just being silly?
Wow, the only secret here I was even aware of was the 'running around the wooden pole coin trick' - which is crazy as I've played Super Mario 64 so many times! In fact, I'm currently (re)playing Super Mario 64 DS and am only new secrets as I go along! ^_^
I knew most of this, but I didn't know the bombs were related to the butterflies. I just thought they were random bombs that appeared if you remained in the area too long
The owl one is hardly a secret, I'd guess most people would get it unless they are so awesome as to never have to aim for too long.
Butterflies turning into bombs. Never change Nintendo.
I wonder if these Easter eggs are in the remake as well.....
Then why not do a top 10? I mean, the video was good, didn't know any of these, but it seems slightly "greedy for clicks" I suppose.
Also, that penguin just got even cuter. Aww.
@LetsGoRetro Sunshine could use a re-release IMO; I never played it on the GC.
An owl in my Mario 64 game!?
@JHDK a Mario 3d HD collection with all four games? WOULD BUY!
Never thought of that after many years I cleared that game..........
@ninjapenguin1 boom! That would be SOOO epic! ...but one can only dream
I swear that the coins from running around the post are the same lot you get for completely stomping it down? Either activity will get the coins out - but not both for one post. So if you've stomped it mid-way, stomp it all the way for the coins and you'll be good.
I'm fairly certain one of the Toads in the castle tells you about the water depth thing for Wet Dry World, and there's a sign in Tiny Huge Land that tells you about running around the poles, so I don't really consider either of those "secrets." I didn't know about the penguin or the butterfly thing, so those were cool, though.
Do you always speak like that?
The baby penguin slide and the butterfly bombs are both new to me, but I knew about the rest. I knew Mario 64 had a lot of hidden stuff, but I didn't know there was STILL things I had no idea about and figured I would of seen it all by now. Pretty neat!
I knew all this because I've played Super Mario 64 so much. My parents only gave me one or two games per year back then (birthday and Christmas). I find Banjo-Kazooie games much more appealing now, specially the Xbox remasters (included in Rare Replay for Xbox One). If we're talking about Mario, Super Mario Sunshine is better than Super Mario 64. Sunshine has some really memorable moments, it's beautiful and has more challenges than you could probably take. It took me some time to get all those blue coins!
I know about the baby penguin one! and yes, the first time I found out my ovaries did burst.
There's also a baby penguin that doesn't belong to the mommy penguin in that level. When I was little I would always take the orphan baby penguin to the mom before the real baby because I couldn't stand the idea of a cute penguin growing up alone in the level. In my head canon the mommy penguin adopted the orphan baby and the two grew up together as siblings.
I remember I would do this every time, regardless of what star I was trying to get in the level.
Seriously, there are people that have played this game and didn't know the trick about controlling the water level? It's kind of obvious if you enter the level multiple times (which you have to do to get all the stars...)
@Utena-mobile There are actually two other penguins, so..... you unknowingly left another one to starve and die all on its own. For shame!
The game could benefit from an HD remaster. It would be great.
Never knew the trick about the butterflies turning into bombs. lol I remember seeing a glitch on (I think) G4 where Mario did the long jump backwards (facing the screen) on the endless stairs a couple times, and eventually it glitched to where Mario literally flew up the stairs and could skip to the final stage.
I knew about them all already! Now do I get a cookie?
The best part is, there are probably some secrets that nobody has discovered yet! Someday...
The Wet-Dry World secret isn't much of a secret- it was kinda instrumental to the design of the level. Heck, I'm pretty sure a Toad flat-out tells you this.
@JHDK Pretty much every 3D Mario game needs a HD-make, to be honest.
Best 3d Mario ever!!!!
Knew them all. Let me guess stopping/controlling the tempo of Tick Tock Clock is going to be in the next video...
The Wet-Dry world one was new to me.
It's pretty awesome knowing that even though I have fully completed this game so many times there are still secrets that I didn't even know about. That is the making of a great game right there and this one in particular is one of my favorites!
@WaxxyOne what!! There are 3 baby penguins? (T_T )
omg, I'm a murderer.
So, not sure if these are "secrets" so much as glitches, but here goes. First, when you head up the stairs going from the first to second floor, there's a patch of ceiling in the staircase that has no collision. You can therefore jump through the ceiling onto a higher point on the stairs. Second, if you use the wing cap to fly to the second highest roof outside the castle, the back wall of the tower can be run up, allowing you to reach the very top of the palace. These are probably well known now, but it was really cool to discover these back in 1997.
@JHDK i think the Galaxy games are among the best games ever made. You could probably make the case for them being THE best. But, I am a big believer in "new games over remakes" by almost any measure.
Galaxy already looks great. I dont want to have to wait, say, another year for a new Mario adventure because guys that would have been creating it are busy changing Galaxy from a great looking game to a phenomenal looking game. And it is so easy to find and play in it's original form that it is just silly to waste resources remaking this game.
I can see if you are a gamer that loves to replay games 100x that you would love remakes, but i am a play it once type of guy. 2 or 3 times at most. Once the newness of it is gone, it just isnt exciting to me.
This is all my opinion. But when i game, the excitement is "i wonder whats around this next corner?" and not "wow, this looks sleek!" i personally dont care much about graphics, and think most games from ps2 on look just fine.
The most important game ever made in my opinion.
Almost all of its pioneering technical ideas define every 3D game we all play today. It took the concept of 3D and made it not only competent, but truly wonderful.
Tremendous game that still plays, looks, sounds and feels magical.
