It may have had a somewhat round-the-houses route to Nintendo hardware, but Nintendo gamers finally got to play The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth on both the Wii U and New 3DS. The man behind those games, Edmund McMillen, has now announced another project on that title's blog.
The Legend of Bum-bo is "is a turn based puzzle RPG type thingy thats randomly generated". McMillen will handle 2D art, writing and design while James Id will be working on programming and 3D art; Matthias Bossi and Jon Evans will be producing the soundtrack.
More teases and details are promised as the year progresses, but the announcement on the Binding of Isaac blog - and the following quote - suggests it will be related to that title.
but why is this on the isaac blog!? what does this have to do with isaac!? when isaac!? isaac? isaac! why!?
well im sure those questions will be answered in the coming months once we tease a bit more.[sic]
Though Binding of Isaac took a while to transition to Wii U and New 3DS, if this title coincides with the NX generation of hardware we can only hope that the new system will receive titles like this in line with platforms like PC, PS4 and Xbox One. Time will tell.

In other words everywhere except that certain console
Was the name randomly generated?
@MrGawain Nope, Bumbo was an item in Afterbirth that grew stronger as you fed him coins. From the look of the logo, it seems as if we'll collect coins in this game too.
@MrGawain You're not familiar with the TBoI universe, are you? It's a reference to one of the new followers from Afterbirth, Bum-bo. His "flavour text" is "Bumbo want coin", like the subtitle of the game.
The community fell in love for him right in the start. And now he became so popular that he got his own game.
So no, there's nothing "random" about it.
@Dakt Exactly. Good level design can have infinite replay value, I don't know what they're trying to achieve in some of these games.
Bum-bo want coin!
lol
Awesome, was just watching one of Edmund's interviews the other day from Design3 and he kept mentioning a "next project" even after Afterbirth. That was like four years ago hah Can't wait to eat this up.
@Dakt and this, kiddos, is why you don't make a first comment for the sake of having the first comment-- You end up looking oh-so ignorant.
Why is randomly generated levels so popular with devs nowadays. I always find the levels so lackluster and un-memorable when they do that. It's not like good game design was a hugely important portion of games back in the day right? They had whole teams devoted to that stuff.
@Freeon-Leon What they are trying to achieve ? Uhm...randomness...
Really, its that simple. Most of Isaacs challenge comes from randomness. If you knew the layout of a stage, no amount of Item or Enemy scramble would be effective.
Its the fact that nothing is set in stone. Not stages, not items, not enemies not even stage effects (curses). Everything is random, the player has to adapt on-the-fly with what he was given.
@Dakt Say what you will about other randomly generated games, but most roguelikes are randomly generated, and The Binding of Isaac happens to be one of the best roguelikes ever. I wouldn't makesuch an ignorant statement, since you know nothing about the game.
@Einherjar Yeah, I undertand this works for some type of games. E.g. Steamworld Heist is a very fun game and they nailed it down perfectly with the not-so-random generated levels in one of the flaws I always saw in TBS games, knowing what's coming ahead in your second play through a level. However, I see much emphasis in this kind of generated content lately.
I'm not saying THIS game will be bad, it just starts to feel like a new not necesary trend.
Not a fan of BoI games personally.
@Dakt wow. XD You've never played any good rogue likes have you?
@Einherjar its the only game to have hard locked my system as well. They kept patching it though and haven't had any issues since the latest patch. Not ideal, but happy it got resolved.
With that said, I think Edmund and his team are incredibly talented and hope they continue to support Nintendo's systems.
@getyourak Well, Isaac also crashed on PC, its nothing new
The game can escalate pretty obscenely with certain item combinations. And on a less powerfull system like the WiiU, it was bound to have hicups.
Due to its randomness, it was also nearly impossible to properly test everything.
Randomly generated, hurrah! Why achieving true design-bliss when you can randomly generate?! Always choose the lazy option! Game developers nowadays....
I don't like random generated level, but I want a random generated game. Imagine a game that randomly generates itself, today it's an RPG, tomorrow an action shooter, next week it's a puzzle game.
If a developer can come up with a game like that, I will never buy another game anymore.
Loved Binding of Isaac Rebirth on Wii U, so I'm very interested in this new one.
The randomness factor in Isaac was done pretty well and it felt fairly original for it being a Zelda-type dungeon game.
@Barbiegurl777: It doesn't mock God. Have you played it? It's more about people giving up their responsibility and hiding behind a God, or rather an imaginative voice in their head to do bad things.
Bumbo will always mean a baby seat ( http://bumbo.com/ ) to me.
