Nintendo's new console - dubbed NX - will be revealed this year, and could even see release before 2017 rolls around, but the company has remained largely tight-lipped about the system. That has predictably led to a lot of uncertainty and questions, and while we can't entirely solve that, we're here to give you a wider picture of what is known about NX so far.
Nintendo Life video guru Alex has compiled this video which aims to educate and entertain on the topic of Nintendo NX, and hopefully it should give you a better idea of what to expect when Nintendo officially lifts the lid on the platform later this year.
Give it a watch and let us know what you think by posting a comment below. Also, while you're at it, don't forget to subscribe to the Nintendo Life YouTube channel for more original video content than you can shake an exceptionally large stick at.

So basically nothing?
We know absolutely nothing officially, as nothing has been revealed.
Is it really guaranteed that we'l get an NX announcement this year?
Everything We Sausage about Nintendo NX So Far?
I figured this will be a video with a blank black screen, because we don't know anything about the NX.
@JustJulyo Yes 100% guaranteed. The reveal in 2016 was confirmed at the same time Nintendo officially announced the NX was a thing.
Well we know it plays games, made by Nintendo and is a console.
What we do not know it is handheld or home console.
When it is coming out,and launch games.
It's a good thing that Alex is so delightful because that video could not have stood on the information alone.
I like the lack of "know" in the title, I think it's damo being existential b/c we don't "know" anything b/c there isn't anything to "know" so we can't "know" anything so there's no point of putting "know" in the title.
Though I suppose I should watch the vid to see what it is we
Quite a set of lungs on that Alex Olney.
@FragRed Ok cool so it isn't all rumors and smoke in the mirror, well still doesn't hype me up that much since I still have just as much information about this thing as I do theories like everyone else
My head is hurting too much info on the NX
@Yoshi @Mopati Everything we LOVE. . .but that comma at the end eeeesh! - I want a dash!
Well that was a fun watch. Don't think I learned anything, but Alex has always been more of an entertainer than a news show host so it's ok.
Maybe in the future someone at NL could do one of these more academically? Not a video, just a list. Though I suppsoe we've already have had a few of those, haven't we?
NX timeline -
Feb 2015 - Iwata says NX is coming while he sells Nitnedo's high-horse to DeNA
June 2015 - at E3 Reggie says they arne't talking about NX, over and over and over again Reggie talks about not talking about NX
June 2015 - maybe NX was shown off behind closed doors?
Sept 2015 - Miyamoto says Pikmin 4 - a main game Pikmin 4 - is near completion, but no console is named
summer/fall - DQ XI is coming to NX, or maybe it isn't
Oct/Nov - maybe 20 million NX in 2016, or financial 2017
Dev kits may be out there
Something like that, only well prepared.
So, when does Alex do a vid "Everything We About QOL ,So Far"?
@rjejr I think you mean 2015, not 2014.
So, basically... More speculation about the speculation that was speculated?
Also, since developers have dev kits, I wonder how big the learning curve for the NX is...? Or basically, how easy or difficult is it to port games, or is it too early to tell?
@rjejr There's no ''know'' in the title, because we don't know anything yet
Yay, it's always interesting when we almost nothing about what it'll be.
2016 yay NX can't wait going to be great keep it up nintendo
This video lies. I was harshly berated in the street for saying the NX reveal wasn't that far away. It was even implied that I wasn't a lovely person.
Here's what we know: It is a console that plays Nintendo games. Everything else is just rumors.
Rips the hair from his head
I can't take this anymore! I want to know everything!
Come on, Nintendo! 2016 just started! Can you @ least give us a hint?!
Talks in a high-pitched voice Please?
I'm still taking everything I hear about the NX as a grain of salt or even less until E3. Since appearing at E3 is the only thing we actually do know about it.
I'm telling you guys, the NX is just an iPad.
What we know: Sweet FA
Whatever it is, there's no more exciting time in the life of a gamer than a new console release. While it doesn't hold the same magic it did years ago when there was a HUGE upgrade in graphics/possibilities, etc. it still is exciting to think of all the possibilities a new console holds. If nothing else, as a Nintendo gamer, you know you are almost certainly getting a new entry in ONE of your favorite franchises (3D Mario, Zelda, Kart, Smash, Mario Party, all guaranteed- Other franchises usually atleast one every other console gen)
I know you need ad revenue NintendoLife but can you knock it off with the speculation articles until we get some actual information? Like at E3 2016?
Hey guys can we start a Prediction Thread? that would be fun to brainstorm what WE think the next system should and shouldnt be able to do.. NO?
My first Prediction:
One of the surprise announcement will be that you can take this VERY portable and POWERFUL system with you anywhere as well as screen cast it to smart tv's and a special NX set top box. similar to ChromeCast and Roku.
The cool thing about being able to take this system with you is that they will start opening hotspots in Malls and Gamestop stores and Arcades so that you can play the games that are hosted there.
Another NEW and amazing feature will be that you can bring this system with you to the new Nintendo Theme Park in Orlando. There will be rides and kiosks with exclusive content and gaming action that only people who bring them with them can experience for themselves. So for EXAMPLE
The Mario Kart ride at the new Theme Park is fun like any other ride similar to Olando studios and Disney World. but if you get on the same ride and bring your NX portable. you can use it to shoot down koopas and enemies and at the end of the level. you get a highscore.. the leaderboard will really bring people back for more and it wont be a stupid one. it will be very clever and Miyamoto-like.
Anybody think this to be cool?
In b4 someone mentions traditional controllers...
So nothing to tell?
@IceClimbers That would be in response to the "well prepared" part at the end.
Thanks, appreciate the catch, and even more the lack of going off on me about it.
I should start an Alex Fan Club.
Please have it where our eshop games especially virtual console games can be brought forward via our accounts so that we don't have to buy them once again????
That would be nice!
The media assumes it's a home console, just because. Yet some of the rumours are about it being a portable system. So how does that work? Oh, it must therefore somehow be both..... or the media is wrong. But the media is never wrong so clearly its both
A 6min video to say you know nothing Just enjoy the Wii U and 3DS, and wait till E3.
Just for fun, I think NLife needs to add a count down clock on the home page for the NX Reveal.....say sometime around 10:25am EST on the Tuesday of E3
The NX is what u get when the 3DS gets old and needs to be replaced. That's all it is in the most general definition.
Wii U? Home console power? It'll plug in to NX, along with other magical plastic boxes. That's my most general prediction.
nintendo consoles bring two things with them: a handicap; and a new controller. a new trend from the iwata era is a gimmick as iwata knew they had to provide a game experience unavailable anywhere else. it's hit or miss, but they do find ways to move it to hit even if it initially misses. btw, take note of the donut report here:
http://www.theverge.com/2015/1/7/7511317/sharp-free-form-display-nintendo-ces-2015
also, props for using old advert footage. i had to watch the video a couple of times coz i was paying more attention to them.
Nice round up of speculations. Fun watch.
@JustJulyo Nah, you're right. I don't think they ever said that they are going to reveal the console this year, they only said that they were going to talk more about it in 2016. That technically doesn't guarantee a reveal, but almost everyone believes that's going to happen... Not saying it's not going to happen, but I don't think they ever confirmed a reveal this year. So yeah, we know virtually nothing.
The NX is an updated gamepad that will work away from the Wii U.
Total nerd thing but i couldn't shake knowing "NX" from somewhere. Then I remember all the prototype ships in Star Trek have NX registries
"Everything We Know About Nintendo NX, So Far"
Wich is nothing, lol!
So now we go the ign route: Almost every week they have such a article about a game, with no info whatsoever!
I can't wait. The speculation is fun but it's also driving me crazy. I'm hoping the rumors that something will be announced prior to E3 between March-May are true.
Personally, I would like to see powerful portability with the ability to play on a TV, the continued quality of 1st party games, and the return of 3rd party titles. I want to play Mario, DK, Zelda, Smash, Kart, Splatoon or Fire Emblem games but I also want to be able to by Fallout 4, Star Wars Battlefront, FIFA, or Madden. That's it! I don't think that's too much to ask for.
@Henmii
Did you watch the video? There are things we know about NX, which you would know if you watched the video or kept up with Nintendo.
Here's what I know about the NX:
What I don't know about the NX:
The NX will most likely be tablet like console that serves as both a portable and set top box. I like to imagine a much slimmer Game Pad with a slightly larger screen and powerful ARM processor in it that rivals the likes of what Apple use in their latest gadgets. They will have a rather small dock with HDMI and/or display port to TV and USB sockets for charging controllers. The unit will be backwards compatible with Wii-U Pro controllers for local multiplayer but not Wii-U games. It will also sport a 3DS card slot for backwards comatability with the DS/2DS. The screen will not have 3D capability.
When the NX is docked in the console dock, the ARM CPU will run in a high power turbo state to push full HD 1920x1080p60 graphics to the HDTV. When undocked, it runs in a lower power state and pushes SD or 720p graphics to the NX Gamepad screen. There will also be two SKUs of the NX, one in a phone size with dual sliders and low profile buttons for true on the go gaming, and one tablet sized unit with full buttons and thumbpads for comfortable around the house use.
Households with multiple NX units are able to share a unified account and save data will be syncronized between them with the push of a button. Games will be primarily available through the eShop however some popular AAA releases will be also be released on special game cards with 30+ year flash retention, starting at around 8gbytes up to a max designed capacity of 32Gbytes for future expansion. These physical cards have a similar form factor to 3DS card but with a notch on either side to share the same legacy slot with 3DS games.
NX will not be utilizing x86 as Sony and Microsoft because x86 consumes too much power to be viable for portable devices. PowerPC unfortunately is a dead architecture and will not be supported going forward so backwards compatibility with Wii/Wii-U will sadly not be possible. AAA third party developers will likely scorn the NX for it's refusal to use x86-64 architecture and Direct X, but with ARM quickly catching up in terms of Gigahertz and processing power, it will ultimately be a non issue with the next wave of ARM processors.
@Mogster
We know mostly speculations and rumors.
Which basically means we know jack squat.
The less I know, the more I will dream!
@John_Enigma You can't handle the truth!
@PlywoodStick In the words of Markiplier, "NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!"
The NX is going to be a box that beams signals directly into your mind without the need of a television, audio equipment or wires of any kind. It's going to be remotely controlled from space via a dense grid of satellites Nintendo is planning on launching within the next few months. The box will be completely free for consumers, and will have the ability to wash your car and feed your dog when you're not at home. Finally, the launch date is obviously this weekend. Please wait outside your back door for the drone to deliver the device sometime between 7 PM Saturday evening and 4 AM Sunday morning (EST). Implanting a chip inside your skull is optional, for now.
@Mogster,
This is what we know: NX is a new "thing" from Nintendo (its not even confirmed if its a console, handheld, streaming-box or whatever), and it will be shown at E3. Everything else is pure rumors!
@Henmii incorrect, as you'd know if you watched the video or kept up with Nintendo news, Reggie said in an interview that they were working on their new 'home console'. This was a slip of course, but it's still a confirmation.
If half of these rumors are true, well, it'll be good. To say the least.
