Today brought the Golden Joystick awards in the UK, a long-running event that is voted upon by the public. Nintendo secured a few awards, though the most touching was awarded to the company's former President.
Satoru Iwata was posthumously awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award, having passed away earlier this year. The official press release described this award as follows:
Satoru Iwata, the Nintendo CEO who sadly died in July this year at the age of 55, was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award. A revered man of the gaming industry, Satoru was the driving force behind many of Nintendo's products including the Wii and DS, and is credited for bringing gaming to the masses by making it family entertainment. Starting out as a programmer in the 1980's for a subsidiary of Nintendo, he became president in 2002, the first outside of the company's founding family. He was renowned for first and foremost being a gamer and was described as "... having the brain of a game developer and the heart of a gamer". His contribution and impact on modern gaming is second to none.
Elsewhere Wii U title Splatoon received two awards, Best Family Game and Best Nintendo Game. Also of note for Nintendo gamers is that Kerbal Space Program won the Best Indie Game award, with the title confirmed to be on the way to the Wii U eShop.
It's a nice honour for the late Iwata-san to be honoured, providing further proof that his passing has had a profound impact on gamers and many involved in the games industry.

Well deserved.
It's been months. I still shed a tear while reading.
That's nice to hear.
I'm not sure on Splatoon being the best Nintendo game though...
Nice of them for mention and congrats on Splatoon winning, still sad to see him go
That was good stuff. I am sure some tool will get on here and post something like "Wii lost the hardcore gamers" or "motion controls are garbage" but the Wii did something no other game console has. It made it possible for whole families, not just gamer families, to enjoy gaming together.
It gave seniors interaction with their grandkids. It was used to help people to recover from serious injury. It's had a lot more meaningful positives than any console probably ever will.
He earned it.
Its.....so.....touching.
He deserved it rightfully. Such a driving force of one of my favorite passtimes. Though, it's sad that a person is mostly recognized for their achievements after they die. I don't know, just a thought.
Well deserved. This shows what kind of impact he had on the industry and the world.
Yay, go Splatoon
He most certainly has earned it. Still can't believe he's gone.
Never be another one like the guy.
The Wii was also the ONLY console to have actual senior bowling tournaments! This is really awesome, guys. Now all of the heart-felt fan art is coming back to memory of when he passed... T_T
It still hurts T_T
Splatoooooooooooon!
Aww! Aaaaawww!!! (sips cup of tea, pauses a couple seconds)... AAWWWWW!!!! I don't know what to say...
Missed him. Well deserved of course.
A fitting tribute, very much deserved.
I still get sad. Nice to see that he still gets honoured. I hope something similar happens at the 2015 Video game Awards in December in the U.S.
Iwata-san absolutely earned that award. Rest in Peace sir.
What saddens me if that he died of cancer which is a horrible illness that hopefully gets a cure someday soon. I hope they investigate and it stops taking young and old lives so fast and cruelly. However, I never liked him as President of Nintendo. I said it when he was alive and I can't change my mind because he has passed.
Everytime I hear about Iwata, I remember the shock I felt when I learned he passed away. Disagreed with a lot of his decisions but ultimately, you couldn't hate the guy. Well deserved.
That award is definitely well deserved, though his passing is still sad.
Still a big loss. Nintendo have been a little too quiet since his passing. At least information is starting to trickle out now.
Love him
NEVER FORGET
He deserves it. He's a great man.
I finished A Link Between Worlds today and once I saw Iwata's name in the credits I couldn't help but think that we will never see another game being produced by him. So many excellent games were made during his tenure as the President of Nintendo. His successor has big shoes to fill.
@SetupDisk We can't say that it won't be surpassed, but the Wii basically paved the way for mobile gaming with the motion controls, while the DS with the touchscreen. And mobile gaming is HUGE. (Maybe there are not too many good games, but the market is bigger than the console+PC market)
He changed the game, and for the better. If there was no Iwata then more of gaming would be about the latest quick and dirty CoD game.
Man, I still miss the guy. He was one of a kind.
I'll miss him especially when the next Direct happens...if it ever freakin does...
So glad to see him recieve this honor and he deserves it and many more. I know a lot of people (even Nintendo fans) had varying opinions of him, but I never once thought that he should be removed or demoted from President of Nintendo, I had much respect for the man. Still so sad that he passed away so unexpectedly and young. Nintendo Directs will never be the same for me, I know it has been said so many times but thank you Mr. Iwata!
I'm suprized Nintendo didn't get more awards. Where's Mario Maker? Also I wished Zelda U would of gotten most hyped game.
Couldn't have gone to a more deserving person (actually there isn't one).
Well done Iwata.
Can't name another man that deserves it more than him. Even though I disagreed with a lot of Iwata's decisions, I still respect him even after death.
Well deserved. I wish he was still around
I wanna cry. He died way to soon.....I miss him. He brought us Pokemon Sliver and Gold. He brought as earthbound, kirby and so many other thing tjat help the company. He had fun for what he was doing and made is feel like we were apart of him or apart of the audience. Please rest in peace.
Well deserved. Miss him :c
That's great to hear. He deserves it!
I still feel like a piece of me died with Iwata. Well deserved award applauds
Absolutely deserved!
